I agree with Zep and Teal. This game is great. I don't know if it's because I'm getting better at Halo or if the missions become more fun, but I am having a blast. I had to force myself to take a break, otherwise I would be playing the campaign all afternoon. Chapters 3 and 4 were just plain awesome with the vehicle sections and big battles. I actually missed a class this afternoon because I lost track of time playing today. Can't remember that last time that happened.
Hope to see you guys online tonight!

Yeah I went home and played some of Chapter 6 (just been kind of plodding through on normal solo) and I am constantly impressed.
I don't know why I never bothered getting into Halo. I don't know if it's always been this entertaining or what...but I don't think so, because I TRIED both 1 and 2. I burned out on 1 about the Library when it got so repetitive, and 2 somewhere in the middle, once you start encountering more and more of the flood nonstop.
For some reason (and maybe it's because my son has forced me to play with him so much lately), lately I've gotten into the universe itself, which makes me enjoy the game much more. I even got some kills last night, which I've never done in a Halo game online before (my grand total Halo gaming to this point was about 5 minutes in a Halo 2 session before I sent it back to Gamefly originally).
Something about it is just "right".

I still like ShadowRun MP a lot more than Halo overall, and I find it more essentially tactical and much, much deeper, but there's no question that Halo MP is excellent as well. There is so much about it that is rock-solid, it's just ridiculous. Watching a replay in super-slow-mo is incredible and clearly demonstrates how well the basics work.
Terry, I wish you had shown a little more patience in our MP session lat night. I love Oddball personally, clearly more than anyone else on my friends list, but I only pull it out when we are just starting a session, or when we have an odd numbered group. Some maps are better than others for it and it odball works better with much smaller groups, like three to five guys. It's tough to do team stuff when there's an odd number of guys in the room, and I just plain hate slayer; absolutely bores me to tears and the fact that I really suck at it doesn't help. If I were capable of being decent at this game, i would probably enjoy slayer and team slayer a lot more, but the more objective games, even oddball, are more fun for me than the mindless kill-counting.
But anyway, after that round of oddball, we ended up doing some fun rounds of other games, including some good matches of assault and CTF. I like to mix it up in my rooms, I don't like doing the same game mode over and over. And I don't really know what games work best for what size rooms, on what maps, with what options adjusted, etc this early on after the game's arrival. There are a lot of choices you can make in the options, but there are a lot of basic choices that just aren't there. For example, when you do one-bomb assault, you can't select 'best of 5' or 'first to 3' or however you want to put it. You can only select how many rounds. Pretty silly. And when we split to three teams for territories, the scoring is just broken. I'm all for giving the user lots of options, but it would be nice if they tested out some of these ideas.
I really thought three teams worked perfectly for VIP, though. 99% of the time you are doing VIP with two teams, and it can pretty easily slide into something that is very much like slayer, but with three teams, it's interestingly different. For example, my green team and I were happy for a minute keeping our VIP alive and safe, but quickly realized we weren't scoring anything at all without killing the other VIPs, and the other two teams were racking up the scores little by little while we sat down near the beach and watched the tide. We grasped that we had to get ourselves into the fray, or before we knew it we would be way behind. With two teams, you don't have that issue, at all.
There are so many options and things you can adjust in the Halo custom games, but as I said a large percentage of the options do nothing but break the game completely. (There was one time I remember in Halo2 where I thought I had put together something very close to siege in GR:IT, only to have the round end immediately upon starting because the victory conditions were met the moment the round began.)
Our custom Halo sessions are all about trying out different things, stuff that's not exactly what you'll find in matchmaking, and to tell the truth half the time the matches suck and don't achieve that glimmering ideal of MP brilliance. But when the numbers are right, we'll do those standby classics like one-bomb assault or some CTF variant and have epic matches. Plus, we can always hop online and get owned by a bunch of trash talking, 'I thought you were good at Halo' kids - o wait, that was some guy on Fshguy's friends list in our custom game!
'Let's do zombies.' Let me tell you, I thought about doing zombies, but the fact that kid brought it up eliminated that option from my mind completely!

I'm looking forward to trying some Heroic or Legendary co-op play, as I think I'll find the best examples of what I like most about this series -the combat adaptable AI in the midst of large battle set-pieces- there.
I played some small and big room multiplayer last night with randoms and had an okay experience. I was pleasantly surprised that in most rooms I was in last night, the randoms weren't dicks. In fact, I had several rooms with really good guys! But overall the Halo MP experience feels dated to me now. I had fun, but not as much fun as I do with Shadowrun, Gears, or the COD 4 beta. I guess it lacks the focused intensity of some of those other titles. But maybe that is to be expected in a game that offers so much in the way of MP gametypes, modes, and options. Halo 3 is easily without peer, there.
I've also decided that I think that the 'race to the weapons scattered around the maps' gameplay conceit is tiresome to me at this point. I believe I actually prefer the 'players earning better weapons through gameplay' option to weapon distribution rather than the 'first one to spot X' sprint.

Just finished my first two MP matches in Basic Training (and no teabags!)
The web integration and replayable movies are fantastic. I still need to uderstand the distinction between uploaded photos and "uploaded hi-res photos" (of which I show zero) but here is a shot of my current config. I can't wait to see some of the unlockable content.

I found a less useful way to use it earlier. After retreating within a bubble, I bounced a plasma grenade off of it and stuck myselfgreggsand wrote:Finding some great ways to use the bubble shield in Team Games. Works great when the other team has a Rocket Launcher and is trying to clear your flag room. Just drop a a bubble shield and the launcher is useless.

I'm surprised by just how much I'm enjoying the single player. I expected that it would be a better experience than the previous two games but the scope of the action and the variation in levels has surprised me.
I still don't think it'll surpass Half-Life 2 which is my all-time favourite FPS (I haven't played Bioshock) but it's a nice bonus when I really bought Halo 3 for the MP.
EDIT:
To second what someone else said, anybody know how to upload photos to Bungie's site? I've saved them in the game and it says that it's connecting to Bungie.net but I don't see them there.
I wish they would just let you save the pics to USB drive (something I wish they'd do in PGR3 as well since Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 lets you do it). A minor quibble.
