He can't get No. 17, though. A pretty good player named Jari Kurri wore that number, and it's now in the rafters of Rexall. :)

Think Burke called Kevin Lowe to tell him that he wasn't signing Penner? I didn't think so, either. I'm sure Burke is hoping the Oil SUCKS hard this year so those picks became even more valuable in the upcoming draft, which is deep.

I'm happy to get Penner. Whether he's worth $4 mil per year will be determined ... But no one scored more goals this season with as little ice time per game as Penner, as the TSN story indicated. So he has a lot of upside, especially if his skating improves.

Take care,
PK

Hmmm, it's S. Niedermayer going to play another season then?

There's a quote in today's paper from Burke that says something like "we would not pay Penner that much, so we are happy to accept the Draft Picks. Based on Kevin Lowe's recent performance as a GM, I am confident they will all be good ones."

ZING. lol

Burke is a DICK. If he was so angry about losing Penner, then why didn't he lock him up with a longer contract or a renegotiated deal before July 1? Why sign Bertuzzi, an older, more brittle Penner who has a sullen attitude, if Penner is so important to the hockey club?

Penner scored 29 goals last season and was making the league minimum, $450,000. He doesn't deserve a raise after last season?

Lowe doesn't owe other GM's any favors. Sure, he's trying to save his job. But he does that by trying to improve his hockey club in any way he can.

Burke is pissed because a GM actually had the balls to defy the "old boy's network" in the NHL. The horror. F*ck him.

Take care,
PK

Can't understand why NBC let Ray Ferraro go. Rogers Sportsnet and HNIC will welcome his thoughts for the upcoming season.

NBC is clueless. Clement is a fine host, and Chicken Parm is among the best analysts in the sport.

You're right, James: NBC's loss is Sportsnet and HNIC's gain. I love Chicken Parm as the Oilers' analyst. He's honest to a fault -- not a homer.

For anyone interested, Lombardi just robbed Cammalleri in arbitration.

2 years at 3.1 and 3.6

A great interview with Lombardi about the ruling on that page.

I was impressed with his insight of the game during the playoffs and obviously CBC liked him too. C. Simpson is leaving his coaching duties to do some color commentary for HNIC.

Good. Simmer was a nice guy, but maybe now the Oilers' power play will emerge from the bottom five of the NHL.

GREAT quote from Craig MacTavish about Brian Burke's reaction to the Penner offer from the Edmonton Sun:

Asked to comment on the reactions of Ducks GM Brian Burke, MacTavish responded with a Burke-like quote.

"Irrelevant really. Listening to him is the equivalent of taking a drink from a firehose.

"Kevin did what he had to do for his hockey team."

:)

Pretty interesting read on the changing salary economics of the NHL from James Mirtle, one of the best hockey bloggers:

Now i havnt been following the uniform thing or any of ice stuff as usual but traditionaly someone else will do the home jersey if rbk are doing the away. Is this not the case this year ?

It would be funny if CCM refused to make such hideous jerseys.
I guess their going after the eyes of the young here.
Im sure Canada just love the new look.
Cant wait for Montreal to unveil their Sheffield united red and white striped away jersey.

Jimmy:

I could be mistaken, but I think Reebok has an exclusive deal to do all NHL jerseys for this season.

I guess it doesnt matter anyway i was thinking the jerseys could end up traditional looking if made by CCM or the like and Euro league looking by RBK but its the teams that design the jerseys right ? not the jersey companies.

I just saw Bill Clement has been replaced at Versus. It's a shame, unless it's a precusor to him going back to ESPN and doing the NHL again with Gary Thorne in 2008-09. They've always been the voice of hockey to me.
