Smytty in Colorado. UGH. F*cking mercenary.

It was a pipe dream to think he'd return to Edmonton, but returning to another team in the division?

DICK.

Pens signed Petr Sykora away from Edmonton. Late deal last night, I believe.

He was the Oilers' leading scorer last season and still is a nifty player in a speed-based system like Pittsburgh's.

Kevin Lowe needs to just admit that the Oilers are in a total rebuilding period instead of making all of these grand proclamations that the shop window is open and that the Oilers are going to spend to be competitive, blah, blah.

If the Oil is rebuilding, then chances are Lowe won't be around to see any fruits of his labor. I think he's fired either during or right after this season.

Take care,
PK

Looks like Nylander is on his way to the Oilers. So much for rebuilding.

Sorry, but Michael Nylander does not qualify as a blockbuster, "we're going to win now" free-agent signing. Signing Gomez, Drury, Souray, Briere, Smyth or Kariya would have signaled that, not Nylander.

Still a solid pickup, but not a franchise-maker.

Pk,

Next time I'm in Marcellus I'll stop by and we can have an orange-and-blue crying jag [different orange and blue, but we've both been burned by 'Captain C#$ksucker' ...].

Bryan:

At least the Oil has guys on its roster. Who the hell is going to suit up on the Island this year? Smyth, Blake, Yashin, Poti and V. Kozlov all are gone.

But at least it will be nice to see Marty Brodeur suffer in New Jersey after re-signing with the team at a cut rate. Gomez and Rafalski are gone, which will hurt Jersey badly as it moves into its new building. Maybe Marty and Lou Lamoriello can have a pity party -- I'll shed no tears.

Take care,
PK

If I'm Shanny, I'm staying put. He has a better chance of winning a Stanley Cup in the few years remaining in his career playing with Jagr, Drury, Gomez and Lundqvist than he does returning to a very improved Blues' team.

Plus Shanny has said he LOVES playing in New York.

Bates — First line center?

You may get a call from G. Snow tonight. He's heard good things about those Syracuse-area men's leagues ...

I've glad the flyers got Briere out of the three big-name centers available. He's scored some incredibly hard to take goals against us in the past few years, like the OT game winner in game 1 of the 2006 playoff series.

The Atlantic division is going to be so tough, though....

I hung up the ax about five years ago. Playing indoor soccer now.

But my buddy is trying to lure me out of retirement with beers after the rink this winter. So I may be back at age 42 ... :)

Sakic's influence had a lot to do also with Smytty's decision to play for COL. They both of course played together many years for Team Canada and if they solve their goaltender issues, I see them back into the playoff hunt next season.

The other group of UFA's will be moved next, they include the likes of D. Hasek, B. Shanahan,Michael Handzus, Slava Kozlov S.Souray, Bill Guerin, Dainius Zubrus (I wish the Canucks would pick him) Todd Bertuzzi and L.Nagy.

I bet Shanny will stay put now that Gomez and Drury have arrived.

Bertuzzi just signed with Anaheim, reuniting with Brian Burke. Hamrlik signed with Montreal, as I'm sure the Habs know they're going to lose Souray. But four years and $22 million for Hamrlik? That's nuts.

Nylander signed with Washington -- so much for that rumor that he's going to Edmonton.

A few more moves of useful Grade B players: Lang to Chicago (good pickup for the Hawks), Nolan to Flames, Smolinski to Montreal, Nagy, Handzus and Calder to the Kings.

I'm surprised Souray didn't go somewhere in the initial flurry Sunday. Then again, maybe teams are wising up and aren't willing to spend $6 million per season on a one-trick pony. Souray is a hard shot from the point and little more -- he's Phillippe Boucher with an attitude and a slightly harder shot.

Man, will there be a middle class left in the NHL after this month? Sure seems like a lot of decent-to-mediocre players are signing long-term deals worth $4 million or more per season. Seems like every team is going to have five or six guys making $3 million-plus, with the rest skating for six figures.

Take care,
PK

Why the hell just not re sign Souray?

Nuts is right.

Nylander to WAS is a good pick for Ovechkin and CO. He's a good playmaker, not worth the 5.5 he's getting and for four years though. With the way the money is being thrown around how about another lockout in 10 years Mr Bettman?

And if Big Bert gets back to shape, stops making stupid penalties, and is capable of playing to his potential, who can stop those Ducks?

Both have big shots, with Souray featuring a bit more velocity. Both have deficiencies in their end. Hamrlik is a better passer, while Souray is more physical and nasty.

Sounds like a push for the Habs, who will save money in the deal since Souray should command at least $6 million per season.

Funny you mention that, James. I was thinking today, despite all of the signings in the East, Ottawa still is the best team in that conference as long as it doesn't lose Emery to an RFA signing.

Anaheim clearly is tops in the West despite the signings in that conference.

So despite all of the address changes, the league's two kingpins could stay the same. Ah, but there's still time for more signings!

:)

And with the Rangers inching ever so closely with their latest signings, if they can keep Shanny, add another body on D, they may surprise a few people too. They also have a mix of young guns about to flourish.

In a matter of two years the NHL has lost almost all that it gained from the lockout. I'm surprised the salaries haven't been discussed more on this board. They are outrageous. Here are two great articles on the subject

Buffalo lost Zubrus today, as he signed with New Jersey.

Damn, will the Sabres have anyone left when camp opens?
