That's good news. I don't know if I'd call a full-blown preview in Game Informer rumors though. :?

IGN's reporting the same thing. http://ps3.ign.com/articles/784/784922p1.html

GTHobbes wrote:According to the little bit of information released about this game today, it sounds like the rumors from a couple of weeks ago were false and that full customization is in. I know it's just wishful thinking on my part, but it would be great to see this game outsell the numbers the old 2k series used to put up. If they deliver on gameplay and graphics/presentation, there could be a buzz about the game that could rival Tecmo Bowl, IMO.

I don't think full customization means editable players in my opinion. I could be wrong, but I don't think that they're going to just allow people to create perfect NFL rosters and have the announcers say their names like in NCAA football. I'm sure the NFL and EA are keeping a very close eye on this.

So I think it is what it is...an alternative that features fictional and retired players.

A lot of people have been misreading the customization thing to imply that they can edit players, but 2K has been pretty consistent and clear that this is not a possibility. Nor will player ratings change during the season. The "spin" seems to be that the teams and the seasons are customizable. I guess this to mean that you have some options with team names, cities as well as divisions, scheduling (length, type??) and team selection.

Maybe there might be some other customization for rules, playoff format, etc.

If I had to guess, I would think that this game turns out to be a great looking game with incredible presentation. The actual gameplay will probably draw some in and turn some away - just like 2K NFL games did because it will most likely play very differently from Madden. I imagine that there will be lots of posts on boards along the lines of "Wouldn't it be great to combine the best of Madden with the best of 2K?" If reports of the gameplay indicate that it plays a fun and challenging game, I will get it for the football. I am in the minority in that as long as I get fun and challenging games (what Mike Vick would call "dogfights") then I could care less about the NFL licence.

I'm not sure if this is legit or not, but someone over at OS has posted a pic that may or may not be from the game. Looking good if it's real, IMO. Can't wait to see Barry Bananas Foster and Greg Avoid Lloyd and some of the other old Steelers.

Looks good but I think they're taking the wrong approach to next-gen football.

They could spend a lot of time developing such detailed art assets but the only time you're going to appreciate them is in the close-up cut scenes between plays.

Now there are big fans of "atmosphere" and "presentation" who care about this more than gameplay.

But a lot of people are more interested, after seeing some of those cut scenes a few times, in dismissing them so that they could get right to the play select screens.

Most of the game is played at the LOS cameras, which are zoomed out, where you're not going to be looking for veins on players' heads.

They should be concentrating on enhancing the experience at that level, like more realistic physics, maybe a dynamic camera which pans smoothly to show parts of the field where the control mechanics could be improved.

Instead, they seem to be focusing on atmospherics and cosmetics. Somewhat understandable, since they don't have the NFL or NFLPA licenses but they do have licenses to the legends that they would want to highlight the latter -- "look at how good Jerry Rice's face looks in our game!" We have Rice and Butkus, they don't!

But is this really the best way to address Madden's shortcomings, to differentiate itself from the dominant player in the market? The value proposition they seem to be aiming at is nostalgia, not necessarily better gameplay.

This game is suppose to come out next month, at the same time as NCAA? It takes a lot of work to generate detailed models and other art assets like that (will we see fans with painted faces in the stands again?). Hope they have something else up their sleeves.

I think that's a little harsh. The first requirement for this game is that it looks at least as good if not better than Madden. If VC can't hit a home run with the graphics, it's going to get buried and none of the gameplay elements will matter very much. VC has an uphill battle to fight, but they have two things working in their favor- 1) they have demonstrated that they are further along when it comes to delivering next gen graphics than EA (at least once the games are in motion) and 2) they have the legend angle, and their range of players will probably appeal to a lot of gamers in the 25-35 range, and certainly to anyone who ever played Techmo Bowl. I don't blame them for working those to the best of their ability. (As for the graphics, supposedly they are taking the same approach as NBA2K7, so everything will be entirely in-engine. It makes for a much better effect than canned cut scenes, and it looks like EA is moving in that direction as well.)

From what I've cobbled from the various previews of the game (and they have been few and far between), there have been several gameplay areas where VC has been concentrating- AI, particularly defensive back AI, weather effects, player skill differentiation and online interface. The emphasis on skill type is akin to Madden's new weapon system, and it remains to be seen how well either works (they've had this sort of thing in basketball games for a few years now without it having a major impact on play). Supposedly the 2K5 DB AI was a major target for improvement, which is great news, as that was by far the most flawed element of the game.

We'll see. With as little media as there has been, there's an unusual amount of speculation about the game. The 2K fans over at OS certainly seem to be dying from a thousand cuts.

Madden had to be one of THE most boring games I have ever played!!! We know when we pick up a 2K game the game is going to have ATMOSPHERE!, something sorely lacking in the next gen Madden games.

Plus, Madden's gameplay hasn't been up to snuff since it made the jump to next gen.

I think what really pissed me off was hearing Madden Producer David Ortiz talk about the last good Madden game was '04. I'm thinking to myself, and you guys have the nerve to put this rehash out every year and you know that you're not doing sh*t to improve the game, pitiful!

But is it really their fault if people keep buying these "rehashes" every year?

If someone wants to give you $5k for a used Pinto, are you going to refuse it?

2K Sports may push harder than EA to upgrade graphics and do more with tweaking AI but is it enough?

If they're bringing a lot of legacy code and "fixing" the parts which were problematic in the last generation, like DB AI in 2K5, are they really doing much different than EA, which also didn't build from the ground up for the new generation despite their hype?

It's not an easy thing, building a football game from scratch. But if they don't do it for a new generation, when will they ever?

Like I said, some people got excited when Take Two signed a deal to use Natural Motion. But apparently, it won't be used for this game. Maybe GTA4.

The approach is a valid one, provided you are building on a good to great game. Look at what happened with the basketball games- 2K built on what was a very solid current gen foundation while EA threw out what was a decent gen game and started from scratch. In the two years since, 2K has put out the best basketball game ever made while EA has been releasing glorified betas. There is no reason to arbitrarily discard the NFL2K engine, especially as it is (to my mind) the best football engine produced to date. There were clear issues that needed to be fixed, but a game based on 2K5 with fixed DB AI is to my mind a better football game than any iteration of WE is a soccer game. VC was very close to something special with that franchise.

Why is no one talking about the screenshots? Did someone mention them already and I just can't find it?

Ha there is a whole thread over at OS. I'm with you, the bodies look too skinny, they seemed to concentrate the most on the faces. I don't know about you but I'm not seeing faces when I play.

Thye aren't horrible, but they aren't mind blowing either. Of course if you read the OS thread they look incredible, or they will be fixed by 2K before release or its an early build or...

If madden released screen like that their ass would be bleeding, Of course someone already did a comparison and picked the best 2K shot of this batch and put it against the worst madden screen trying to say 2K graphics were the shiznit. Problem is, even in that scenario the Madden one looks better to me.

Anyway like i said, let me see it in motion from a gameplay perspective. I don't care about these kind of shots for either game, I want to see what it looks like when I am playing it.

Agreed...but then again, all of the "critics" said the same thing about The Show and its uninspiring graphics on the PS3, and I wouldn't trade that game for the world. Hopefully 2k makes it 2 for 2 for me with football.

Great or best game is relative.

Might have been great for the last gen but if you leverage that game, you're looking at incremental improvements, not a new paradigm enabled by new hardware -- evolution instead of revolution.

As an example, Naughty Dog, the studio which had done Crash Bandicoot on the PSX and Jak and Dakster on the PS2, are working on a new game, called Uncharted:Drake's Fortune. Looks like an INdiana Jones type of adventure set in the jungles. The environments are lush, the animation looks like no other console game.

ND explained that with the new class of hardware, they don't have to stay just with cartoony characters. They can try to do more human-like characters, with detailed environments. Someone else will carry the Jak and Dakster franchise forward but ND had no problem leaving what was their bread and butter behind to push towards new things.

VC came up with a new name (but maybe mostly because they didn't have a license) but it sounds so far like not a completely new game. It just seems like a missed opportunity to introduce a level of technology (implying new gameplay mechanics and realism) into football games and sports games in general.

If there was ever going to be a chance to build something new, this was the time, because they didn't release last year and there's really no big urgency to release this year. They could have worked on something for 2, 3 or 4 years -- or maybe do incremental releases at low prices to raise funds for continued development.

Instead, they're doing a full-blown release at full price, on a risky concept. If it's just another iteration of a game which struggled in the marketplace, why would people pay $60 especially when not having to pay licenses, their costs should be lower (unless they're paying those Legends crazy money)?

They could have differentiated on gameplay but instead, looks like their selling points are legends and better graphics than the other game (and that is of course subjective, as is gameplay).

True, but that only highlights how essentially silly the pre-release screenshots are. Anyone who saw screenshots of NBA Live 06 would have thought they were looking at the very face of next-gen gaming. The only problem is that the game has to actually move. I still think that a hi-res version of NFL 2K5 would look better than Madden 07 on the next gen, simply because of the smoothness of the play and the quality of the animations. Now that Madden has kicked the framerate up to 60 FPS and concentrated on branching animations, that may no longer be the case, but we won't know until August.

S-Mac,

I don't disagree which is why I said let me see it in motion. Goes for both games this year.

I am just commenting on the situation which I find laughable. Some of the 2K Fans at OS have become a parody of themselves. Everything they have blasted madden fans for being over the years they have turned around and become over the past several months.

When forum posters start calling BKrich a madden fanboy you know the place has lost any sense on reality.

WCO,

While it's a risky concept, 2k Sports is being very smart on their marketing.

The hype as of right now is about the legends, there strongest assest. There's very little mention of fake teams.

Does anything really buy they are going to have full editing? The press statement says you can change team logo and player names. Doesn't say anything about creating an NFL team like a WE Editor would allow you to do. Does mean that you can change the current roster set either. What it sounds to me is that you will have a player creator, some mode where you can select premade logos to slap on to your team, and a text editor to change the Florida Fishermen to the Miami Dolphins.

I see nothing here inconsistent from 2k's statement about editing a few weeks ago. My feeling is there will not be a WE-type editor in this game. And more than likely you won't be able to pull a WE and recreate any of the NFL teams.

I hope I'm wrong.

I hope the playor creator will allow the gamer to create other legends. I would love to create players that are missing from that list like Shannon Sharpe, TD and some other of my favorite Broncos. At this point I can live without real teams but let me have a editor to create as many legends as I want. If 2k allows the community to do that. Within weeks you will see hundreds of legends in the game.

I have a feeling, that for the most part, people have already made up their mind as to whether or not they like the game. It goes both ways, but I'm really looking forward to reading the posts around the net once this is released.

I'm sure that to those who already love 2K that it'll be the best game ever, and to those who don't like the previous 2K efforts will think it sucks.

There will be very few level headed impressions around the net discussing the game for what it is.

I've been reading the game is $60 and not $20.

I think I'll just wait for the price to go down and what everyone else thinks about it before buying.

I may do the same with NCAA this year since Ive heard it's not going to be that different than last years. Also, Create a School feature and some other features are still missing from the old gen versions. Not worth the $60, but maybe $40.

Overall, I'm not impressed. Looks a lot like 2k5 with some better textures and in HD. Gameplay is what matters, but things do have that 'stiff' look that has defined this series since the beginning.

Yeah that video didn't impress me much either. I know I am definitely picking up NCAA, not sure about Madden yet and would only get this game if there are overwhelming positive reviews for it.

Looks very good to me, but I'm not sold on legend football until I play it for myself.
