In homer friendly Wrigley field, Soriano should have good numbers and will be probably the Cubs leadoff hitter. He'll probably take over J. Pierre's position. Excellent signing.
It's a huge pickup...I wouldn't say it's a great signing though...as others have mentioned...8 year contracts to 30 year olds don't end well. Had they signed him for 5 years, it would be great...but then again they would have needed to add a few mil per year to make that happen.

Good deal for Soriano...since he signed with the Cubs he only has to really care about playing and winning from April until July 1st.

I'll miss the Cat as well. A true professional while he was here and a solid bat .

LMAO. Excellent excellent point. What a ridiculous amount of money to spend on one player for a franchise who hasn't won the W.S. since 1908!

They did what they had to do to get him. It will be a tough contract in three or four years, but he seems very healthy and you can't find a better combo of speed and power from any player at any age. They have a lineup that can drive in a lot of runs (and a coach who doesn't dismiss OBP). If they can just find a couple of above average pitching pieces they could be pretty competitive next year, especially in the Central.
Wow... I'm pretty shocked that Pujols didn't win. However, with the insane late run that Howard went on he definitely put himself in the conversation with Beltran and Pujols, so no complaints.

Huge sigh of relief to see Pierre headed to LA. The Giants reportedly offered him 3 yrs @ $30M.
Who knows? Coletti could turn out to be a genius. At the rate things are going, Pierre might be a bargain at $9M in 2011. The Angels just gave a 33 year old middle reliever 4 years at $18M. Justin Speier had an exceptional year in 2005 but c'mon.
Morneau isn't even the most valuable player on his own team. You could make the case that both Mauer and Johan had better seasons, along with a half dozen other AL players.
It's amazing, at the same time of the year as all these crazy multi-million dollar free agent signings, they announce the league MVPs... the AL MVP made $385,000 last year and the NL MVP made $355,000!
Well it was a very close vote, but I must say I was surprised D. Jeter didn't win it. I even had J. Dye ahead of Morneau but regardless, Canada particularly Bristish Columbia is proud to have two MVP's in baseball and Basketball.

I agree that Morneau was the third most valuable Twin. But he really put it together in May and was hot the rest of the way, which coincided the the Twins rising from 4th in the AL Central to eventually win the division. I'd put Santana at one and Mauer at two for the Twins--if I had a vote it would have gone Santana 1, Jeter 2.
Am I a bad fan for being more concerned in how this will affect his arbitration salary in a year or two?
