My wife and I still use the PS2 as our DVD player. She hates it when I play the thing, but as soon as we go to blockbuster to rent a movie, it's her friend again.
I used the Xbox and now the 360 in My PC room as a DVD player....Just one less DVD player I had to buy....3 rooms with TVs.

I really dont care if the Wii has one Im covered...and I will get one of these suckers for when the niece and nephews visit :)

Damn, I got suckered by Nintendo.... again!

After holding out on all the gameboys revision, and stayed away from GBA, I broke down and got a DS early this year (only to find out about the DS Lite 1 week after buying the DS). At least I sold the DS to get the DS Lite. I thought the Wii is gimmicky, and after playing Elebits, that only confirmed my suspicion.

Until today, I went to Nintendo store and played that sports demo pack-in. The bowling game is FUN. It is almost like real bowling without the arm sore (and alittle easier, but still tough to get strikes/spare). I like it alot. Now if only I have more than $10 to my name.

I might just purchase the Wii this weekend if I can locate one at Wal-Mart. I have around $80 in credit there. If I pick up a game, it'll most likely be Zelda. That and the Wii sports package should be quite entertaining for a while.

There are four things that might be pushing me to a Sunday drive-around looking for a Wii:

1 - My wife's sudden surge of interest after seeing it in action on TV. She really wants to try it out and I really enjoy gaming together, but she won't touch the 360.

2 - People like Robert Summa, formerly a very vocal critic, praising the system and talking about how improved many early games are since he last played them.

3 - I've sold a lot of unused electronics lately, increasing the gaming fund to a higher-than-expected level.

4 - The DS. Many of those games have been revelations to me and gotten me through any sports gaming rut. Shooters don't do much for me, so in some ways the 360's non-sports offerings are more limiting than the Wii's will be.

I'm hoping the increased supply will prevent PS3-level anarchy on Saturday/Sunday.

If you live near a Walmart, head over there at midnight Saturday... you should be able to pick one up.

Zelda sounds so good, I might have to do some legwork this Sunday as well.

Yep...the wife just told me she would play Wii Bowling with me if I got it. I am going to take a look around on Sunday too, but won't buy anything unless I can find some component cables (I think there might be a 3rd party one available).

Probably will end up keeping the old xbox to play Winning Eleven and NFL2k5...a nice balance perhaps.

Red Steel looks great too...

Kinda late to the party, but what is the benefit of the component cables?

Thanks!

If you want to play the games in 480p (progressive scan) than you need the component cables. Will just add a nice sharpness when compared to default cables I guess. I shouldn't be so picky but 480i games don't seem to look so nice on my set.

I also just found this which might be good news on this particular issue:

You know what really f*ckin' pisses me off??? Goddam Nintendo and their lack of accessories at launch!!! There are absolutely no extra Wii-Mote's or Nunchuck's available at any of our stores if you did not pre-order one on the first day. I have a really weird feeling that there will not be any extras at the regular stores too (BB, Target, ect...). That really frustrates me. Nintendo markets this thing as a family machine and a multiplayer console and then has no extra controllers to sell at launch!?!? I hope I am wrong and they are around the big stores. but I have a feeling I am not...

My other issue is their absolute lack of HD acknowledgment. I understand the console not being fully HD, but to no even have component cables available at launch is ridiculous.

Hey,

I'm highly considering it (for Sunday). When I called EB Games, etc..today they said that they're not sure about getting component cables. Maybe they'll know more tomorrow. I can live without a 2nd Wiimote right at the start I guess...I'm pretty sure you can use one Wiimote for 2 player bowling.

I read where someone pretty much blamed M$ for all of the console hardware problems because of their desperation to beat Sony to launch. They cut the Xbox off at only 4 years (compared to 6 and 5 for Sony and Nintendo) so they could kick off the next generation early. If M$ had delayed the launch (thus enabling Sony and Nintendo to delay also), when the consoles did launch we might have seen:

Xbox 360: less hardware failures, more units, more b/c titles, and almost certainly HDMI output
PS3: more units, more b/c titles, less firmware issues
Wii: HD support

Just speculation of course, but none of it seems too far-fetched. Specifically, you've got to think M$ would like a do over with HDMI. And Sony pretty obviously could have used more time. As for the Wii, it's hard enough to justify releasing a non-HD console in 2006, but it probably would have been tougher well into 2007. Oh well, we'll never know.

Impressive reviews. Looks like Nintendo has their killer app with Zelda, and Madden sounds good enough to warrant serious consideration.

"Aside form kicking and big hits though, the game controls absolutely phenomenally. Passing rocks, maneuvering on the field is amazingly intuitive and fast, and everyone that got their hands on Madden 07 had a blast. One editor stated that Madden 07 for Wii was the first game that truly convinced him to pick up a Wii for himself. Mind you, we've been playing games like Wii Sports and Zelda: Twilight Princess over the last few weeks, and this editor isn't a fan of the Madden series at all. If you want your answer to whether or not Madden 07 is a perfect fit for Wii, you just got it."

Kaz, that's an interesting thought. Even with more time, I'm not sure if Nintendo would have worried about HD or not, but the XBox was definitely abandoned before it had outlived its usefulness.

I'm VERY intrigued by Madden now. I still play the 360 version, but it doesn't grab me nearly as much as the other titles I own. But I'm seeing the Wii as my escape from sports games, so Madden will have to blow my socks off to get me to switch away from the 360 version.

I'll probably run by the nearby Blockbuster to find out how many Wii games they'll have to rent. If it looks like they'll be well stocked, then I might buy one of their game passes and just try out a bunch of games if I get a Wii tonight/tomorrow.

Zelda's never done much for me, but I feel obligated to give it a try after reading all of the reviews/impressions.

So this is the second time you've tramped out the "Microsoft quit after 4 years" argument, by your assessment "because they were getting pummeled by $ON¥" (See how fun that is!)

So, despite coming out with a system (Xbox) that included better graphics capabilities, an included hard drive and a comprehensive online strategy, MS somehow owed it to the industry to remain behind in the last generation and continue being "pummeled"?

So with an additional year of development and resources at their disposal and an eager fan base ready to camp out since the Killzone teaser saw light of day, Sony comes out with a wet fart of a release and it's MS's fault?

Your comment that this is an Xbox board in the other thread is also off base. I've owned every major console released since the Atari Jaguar in 1993, PS3 and Wii currently notwithstanding although I may very well grab a Wii (ahem) for Zelda and maybe Rayman. When the PS3 comes out with a few desirable games that exceed any experience I can have on the 360 or the price of the console becomes more palatable, then I'll consider a purchase. If that makes me an Xbox fanboy, then one's standards are pretty low.

It may or may not be a good value, but it's available now and it includes Madden and extra controllers:
