OT (sort of): Why should (or shouldn't) I get a 360 now?

No HD without component so that would be stupid.

Actually, with Component and separate audio, you would think it would cost them more to make than a small HDMI cable, unless there's a royalty to pay for those connectors.

The thing to wonder is if they'll let third-parties sell cheap cables. MS has an expensive licensing program for X360 third-party peripherals. So if Sony follows suit, then no $10 cables from Madcatz.

Actually, assuming it is HDMI 1.3, you might want some nicer cables because it will be a new thing plus there have been reported handshake problems with some HDMI ports and cables.

You're absolutely right, but have you ever tried to find the cheap cables in a b&m store? It's a nightmare no doubt perpetuated by the same stores who continue to make out like bandits on those overpriced cables. Hell, when I was looking for them in about five different cities I probably would have taken the plunge for $50 - all I was finding were stupid cables in the $75-$125 range. You want to talk stupid! Ultimately I ordered one for about $15 from Amazon and, of course, it works just fine with my upconvert player and HD set.

I'll believe it when I see it. If you take a step back from $ony's marketing hype, lets look at some facts (or as close to facts as we have today):

On paper, the PS3 is supposed to be more powerful than the 360. If the "Cell" is all they say it is, then it could be more powerful in some ways. As far as GPU's, I think they are comparable, with the edge (IMHO) to the 360 since the GPU is designed from the ground up to support shader intensive games.

If you look at the 360 and its external PS, considering that the PS3 is "on paper" more powerful and still at 90 nm technology, the PS3 would have to be the size of a toaster oven for them to be able to pull off an internal PS. Frankly, the external PS makes soens to me as putting it internally only adds to the challenge of keeping these powerful systems cool. Imagine if you tried to cram a modern PC witth comparable horsepower into a small form factor such as the consoles.....you would have MAJOR heat issues and many high end PC users today have very elaborate water and air cooling processes....If $ony is able to pull off an internal PS and not cripple the horsepower of the system they announced at E3 AND manage to keep the units cool enough to not fail like the 360's have, then you can color me on HIGHLY impressed SOB.....

Well the PS3 is suppose to be large, larger than perhaps any console which has ever been made.

Plus there are rumors that the RSX has been downclocked from 550 Mhz to 500. Also that the Cell has gone from 3.2 Ghz to 2.8 Ghz.

OK tech guys. Just as ordered a VGA cable this weekend , I found this article. Currently I have my 360 hooked up with the component cables, I know the VGA cable can upscale the resolution of the screen, but is the quality that much different from component? Who's got VGA cables connected to the 360 and what are your impressions?

Reading over at AVS forums, it seems the VGA cable is hit or miss, depending on the user and the display. One bonus is that the VGA cable allows you to output the exact native resolution of your display, including for DVD playback, which means with the VGA cable the 360 can act as an upconverting DVD player. Among the apparent drawbacks, according to some, are less color saturation than the component cables give you. Some would not see this as a negative, but rather as a more accurate output, but who knows?

In general, it seems that over there there is no consensus; some displays take the VGA from the 360 better than others (eg if your display has a markedly better upscaler than the internal 360 one, it's possible the VGA cable will not improve your results greatly), and some viewers prefer the component to the VGA on their display. Best bet is to try it yourself to compare the two, and see which you like best.

Winning Eleven on 360 could force my hand with regards to making the jump to next gen. My only small concern is that the ps3 controller will offer a better overall experience than the 360 pad (probably a minor one).

The prospect of having this library means that picking up a 360 wouldn't be a bad idea.

Winning Eleven
NHL07 (if it lives up to the hype)
Colin McCrae
Assassin's Creed
Mass Effect

PS3 delayed in Europe to March.

Launch volume reduced from 2 million to just 500k, 400k for North America and 100k for Japan.

Blue-laser diode shortage blamed.

Honestly, I can't imagine a controller performing better than the 360 wireless. I prefer it to the excellent PS2 controller, and the new technology in the PS3 controller is too much of a wild card at this point.

That's good to hear...I do remember liking it a lot in the time I spent with it.
