Did you see the CSB pre-draft video of Johnson? NHL.com had an index of every top prospect's Central Scouting Bureau highlight video. I sat here for 90 minutes one night and watched them -- I'm a geek, I know! -- and Johnson was the only kid I saw, including Staal and Kessel, that made my eyes pop and made me say, "Holy f*ck, this kid is good."

Johnson just seems so smooth and always is in the right position. And in the rare times he appeared out of position in the video, he's such a siky skater for a big kid that it only took him a couple of strides to return to the proper spot.

An exciting player, for sure. Must have been great to see hockey in July! :)

Take care,
PK
Yep it was great to see some hockey in July here, nice and very cool inside the rink while 103 outside today. All of the Blues top prospects are in town for the entire week except TJ Oshie who had a prior committment with North Dakota. Johnson as well as other college bound players had to pay their own way here as well as hotel accomodations. For some reason NHL rules prohibit the actual head coach(Mike Kitchen)from being on the ice with the prospects so Blues future coach Al MacInnis is running the camp this week. The camp goes all week long and ends with a scrimmage on saturday morning.

Looks like former Oil M. Peca will get his wish to play for Toronto, 1 year deal, 2.5 million. The Leafs needed some help at centre with the departures of Lindros and Allison.

Buh-bye. Toronto better make the playoffs, or else the Leafs are paying for a guy who won't show up until late April.

I shed few tears on this one. Peca was excellent during the playoffs, but the Oilers paid $4 million last year for a guy who scored nine goals during the regular season. That's not enough production for the cake.

Take care,
PK

When asked why he left Edmonton, M. Peca said that it was more of a geographical decision than anything else. And true, teams from the West had always a much tougher schedule than the teams from the East in terms of travelling but I am sure there's more to it. I guess he would never play for Vancouver then. It'll be interesting to see how he bonds with D. Tucker now. Why? Remember the 02 playoffs between the Leafs & Isles?

Going back quite a few posts, I can't wait to see Johnson play for the Gophers this year. Him and Kessel on the ice together? Talk about a nice offense-defense combo.

I'm looking forward to seeing Minnesota at the Frozen Four in St. Louis in April, so hopefully they'll be there. I'll also be watching the Gophers on the dish all season long. Don't forget about the rest of that incoming freshman class you guys have this year including Kyle Okposo. Should be a great year for the Gophers.
By the way the Blues have another guy from Minnesota at the prospect camp this week, a kid named Andy Sackrison and he played at St. Louis Park High school in Minnesota last year. He was the Blues 5th round pick this year. You know anything about him Dave? I believe he's going to play in the USHL this year and then he's heading to Minnesota State for the 2007 season.

The Flyers signed Geoff Sanderson, but it's looking less and less likely that Primeau will ever play again.

Well, here's someone that doesn't mind staying in EDM as coach Mactavish got a new deal with EDM for four more years.

One of NYI new GM G. Snow's job ironically is to sign their goalkeeper R. Dipietro to a new contract. Both are good buddies too.

Here's strange signing. Bad boy super pest S. Avery back to LA for 1.1 after being suspended last season playing for the Kings.

Look like M. Recchi will be headed back to Pitts.

BUF got dinged in arbitration as their captain D. Briere got a huge salary increase. 5 million per sounds a bit steep to me. Will he get traded now?

# Scott Gomez will find out today how much of a raise he will receive for the upcoming season. The playmaking center, who earned $2.204 million last season while establishing career highs with 84 points and 33 goals, is believed to have swung for the fences in asking for $7 million in Friday's salary arbitration hearing in Toronto. The Devils were expected to offer $4 million. - Newark Star-Ledger

# According to 'family adviser' Wade Arnott, Bruins top draft pick Phil Kessel would sign with the Bruins immediately if the salary, bonuses and quality playing time were right. - Boston Herald

Any Isles fans have opinions on John Wiedeman as a play by play guy? He's the new Hawks pbp radio announcer and he's got some mighty big shoes to fill.

Belfour signs with Florida for a season.

Solid backup, if he can keep up a positive attitude throughout the season.

I don't think they signed him to be a back up in FLO. At worst he'll share his ice time with Auld but if his back keeps him competitive, he'll steal a few games for the Panthers. Wonder what the 1 year term was for...

$750K.

I'd be happy if he put in more than half of the Panther's games this year, because I respect him as a player and as a person, but I doubt that's going to happen.

It'll be interesting to see if the Devils can afford S. Gomez who was awarded 5 million per on arbitration. That puts NJ almost over the top and they have only 2 days to decide or he becomes a UA.

I like the J. Bulis pick up for the Canucks, this would end the days of A. Carter for sure in VAN.

Dominik Hasek is returning to the Detroit Red Wings. The 41-year-old Czech goaltender who played for the Ottawa Senators last season signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings. Hasek first joined Detroit in July 2001 after being traded by the Buffalo Sabres.

I just don't understand the Wings. With other younger and healthier keepers around that are available such as M. Biron they go back to Hasek.
Don't get me wrong, he'll steal a few games, but we'll he last all the way to the playoffs?

My initial reaction to this was, meh. But now I don't know. As a couple of the Wings blogs pointed out, at $750k, if Hasek goes into the playoffs healthy and plays more than half the regular season games, he's probably the best goaltending value in the league. Considering the cap, that's nothing to sneeze at. When the guy played last year, his numbers were better than Legace's and far, far better than Belfour's (talk about a near-miss on that signing). I'm cautiously optimistic on this one.
