Interesting tidbit from the guide, this doesn't affect any quests etc, but it might spoil something for you if you have like super powers of trial and error. so stop reading now if you are that person.
So I went into a plundered mine last night and ran into a lot and I mean A LOT of goblins. So after clearing the place I found a goblin totem, I decided to skim the guide see if it meant anything.
Turns out there are 7 goblin tribes in the game and each of them had a home base for lck of a better word and in this base each has a totem.
Now here is the cool part,If you snuck into the bases and stole the totems and then placed them in one spot say. The goblins eventually track down their totems once placed and well of course they don't like each other.
So assuming they meet no resistance on the way to their totems, you will get to watch a mass goblin battle. As they fight to gain control of their totem.
Anyway not something I would do, just goes to show how much time and work went into this game.

Reading about the goblin totem gives me an idea: Remember the Laurel and Hardy movie "March of the Wooden Soldiers"?? I may attempt to recreate it.
I can imagine someone out there telling their friends "Dude, I got all the goblin totems, a bong, and half an ounce of weed. Wanna come over and do one-hits and watch the slaughter?"

Just done my first mini-quest in Chynoweth (or something similar), tracking some artist down through a portal into his painting....edged my sword with turpentine (!) to kill the painted monsters and help him get back out.
I did, of course, take the opportunity to have a bit of a pilfer round his house before rescuing him....just to keep in practice, you understand.

"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
Small spoiler here possibly, read at you're own risk!
Have any of you taken a look at the stone you get when you close the first Oblivian Gate? It has powers on it, and I ended up making an amulet the has permanent sense life on it. Pretty cool. I don't know if various ones can be combined together, but it's cool that it has those special properties. I also picked up a pair of sharkskin boots while in Oblivian, which enable you to walk on water.

Update for PC users. The game is running GREAT for me on my low end system now. My system specs are:
P4 2.0Ghz
1GB Ram
ATI 9700 Pro 128 MB (running Omega drivers)
I have it set at 1280x1024, running medium textures with high water detail, no AA, grass slider OFF (game still looks fine). Distant land/trees/buildings ON, tree distance in the middle. Bloom on or off, doesn't matter... makes no difference.
I get average around 20 or so FPS while just wandering around, in pretty much any area. It spikes up a bit in less intense indoor areas. Also, running the omega drivers makes a big difference over ATI catalyst. The frame rate does not appear to increase, but it is WAY smoother with Omega drivers.
I found that on my machine, running at 800x600 or 1024x768 didn't get me any FPS boost or make it any smoother. (in fact, running at 1280x1024, the same resolution as my desktop, is bit smoother than the lower resolutions) The Oblivion world looks amazing at the settings I use right now. I get a slight bit of choppiness when some characters load up but nothing that really affects the experience.
One big key is to keep the Grass distance slider all the way left, to OFF. It removes the wavy grass but the world still looks great.

Yes there is good loot in those gates. I've managed to close 3 of them and really only the first one was involved in the main quest.
I was just walking down the road and one sprung to live, the skies got red and a strom erupted. Next thing i know I am fighting off scamps.
Also those stone you speak of must be random, as my first one gave me a different power when put on a sword.

Questions and observations..
Is it Me or does it take a long time to level?
I killed one guy after completing his quest (he wouldnt pay Me anything
) and the game said my actions were observed by an unknown. Anyone have any idea who that might be?
Do you get xp for completing a quest or just cash? Ive obviously played too much WoW.
I joined the thieves guild and they said Id be booted for killing someone.
Do they mean in the act of stealing or just killing anyone...cause I gots to do some killing
Inventory...Is there a way to compare your equipped stuff to the stuff you are buying during the transaction?..Its a pain to keep going back to that screen .
The arrows are funny . I put about 10 in some guy and he just kept walking around with them stuck in him. Whats up with that?
The persuade mini game can be fun. Found myself playing fo quite a stretch with everyone on the street.
I played all day yesterday(after the NCAA games) and My head was spinning....alot to keep up with...

Have you read the manual at all?

You level by improving your primary skills 10 points. So if blade is a primary skill and you use it a lot, or find a skill book or visit a trainer it moves up a point. You usually have 7 primary skills, so once the combine to 10 points of advancement you level. You don't get XP in this game it doesn't exist.XXXIV wrote:Questions and observations..

yeah it was actually covered i nthis thread, but i won't ruin it for you/I killed one guy after completing his quest (he wouldnt pay Me anything) and the game said my actions were observed by an unknown. Anyone have any idea who that might be?

If you know how to level up then it doesn't take very long. You don't level up in this game by killing monsters and gaining experience for it. You have to look at your characters 7 Major skills. Every time you level up one of those skills it goes towards your characters level. Every 10 times you level up one of your major skills you level up.XXXIV wrote:Questions and observations..

That's the Dark Brotherhood. The next time you go to sleep you will be visited by someone in the Dark Brotherhood trying to recruit you.XXXIV wrote:I killed one guy after completing his quest (he wouldnt pay Me anything) and the game said my actions were observed by an unknown. You get whatever is given to you. It's not always cash. Sometimes it might be a weapon or piece of armor. You don't get xp for completing quests. You get xp for anything you do. You run around and jump a lot then you level up your athletics skill. You use your sword a lot and you level up your Blades skill. Your character reflects how you play the game.XXXIV wrote:Do you get xp for completing a quest or just cash? Ive obviously played too much WoW.

Unfortunately there is not. The only real beef I have with the game.XXXIV wrote:Inventory...Is there a way to compare your equipped stuff to the stuff you are buying during the transaction?..Its a pain to keep going back to that screen .
Maybe he's playing the Jake Lamotta to your Sugar Ray Robinson. "You didn't put me down."XXXIV wrote:The arrows are funny . I put about 10 in some guy and he just kept walking around with them stuck in him. Whats up with that?
After RTFM and finally understanding how it works I find myself checking everyone's disposition and if it's under 40 I play the mini-game.XXXIV wrote:The persuade mini game can be fun. Found myself playing fo quite a stretch with everyone on the street.
I put in a lot of time over the weekend and have barely scratched the surface of this game. I think I've put in around 13 hours since picking it up and I've only done like 3 or 4 of the main story quests.XXXIV wrote:I played all day yesterday(after the NCAA games) and My head was spinning....alot to keep up with...

I have the strategy guide. For this type of game I like having a strategy guide. Not to tell me exactly what to do next, but it helps in understanding the systems a bit, some hints on character creation etc. Provides some nice tables as well, and maps which are pretty good (although the ingame one is good)

The only guide I have ever actually had any use for was WoW's.
You have sold a copy.

Pretty much, yeah. I loved and finished Morrowind and levelled a 60 Pally6 in WoW and it's two very different types of games. "Power levelling" in TES games is pretty silly, as the whole point is to enjoy the "Lone Ranger" style of play and explore an incredibly diverse and deep world.Sudz wrote:getting this today.
is it totally different from WOW?
Both games are great, but in their own distinct ways.

I snagged the guide also, lots of good info on creatures, magic, and the systems used in the game. I'll stay away from the walk-throughs unless I'm desperate to finish a quest (which I'm sure will happen eventually!) I still have the guides for both Daggerfall and Morrowind, they make for interesting reads if you are a fan of the game; sort of the Eldar Scrolls version of the Dungeon Masters Guide.

What class are you playing? I can't understand how you could play that long and not make a single level.XXXIV wrote:Good Thing then that I stayed at level 1 after 5-6 hours of play.RobVarak wrote:. Also has anyone just raided a dungeon, then found out later it was part of a quest objective? If so, how does the game handle a situation like that, I always feel when i am randomly hitting dungeons like I am going to screw something up.

Figuring out I could from place to place with the map helped alot too.

I havent done much very much fighting.
I did rob a jewelry store....

I am playing My own custom class(could be a big part of the delay), a sorta warrior thief...I dont think I matched it up well. I will reroll as I can get to where I am in the game fairly fast now that I almost know what to do...well except for speechcraft... I had leveled up where I got a free turn on the circle .
EDIT: So Im reading the guide about character creation and it says itsimportant save before you leve first dungeon when they ask if you want to reroll....

No idea if this is in the manual or guide or not, but I stumbled across this little feature last night.
I switch back and forth between first and third person views as the mood hits, but was finding that the third person view was too far away from my character, so was using it less.
Well, as some of you may know if you click and hold the right joystick, it goes to an external view of your character you can rotate around (you have to keep the stick clicked down). If you use the triggers in this view, they zoom the view in and out. Well, if you are in third person mode when you start this, the zoom level stays when you release the right jotstick. I had my third person camera almost looking like a GRAW over-the-shoulder view, it was pretty slick.
Anyway, thought I'd pass this along for any of you guys who use the third person view.

Okay, grabbed this game just for the sake of something new as i hardly ever play RPG's and i have to say i'm an addict. Unfortunately i also suck and have no idea what i'm doing. I was able to get out of the dungeon and into open air, but i've just spent two hours walking around the marketplace then i followed some dude name Argonin (sp?) to his house where i'm supposed to look around when he leaves.......but he won't leave!!!
Every time i try to kill someone for fun, not only do they not die, but i end up in the slam. I have no idea what i should or shouldn't be carrying, wearing, eating, drinking, etc, etc, and yet i can't put the damn controller down!!!
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, but when a game can grab you even when you feel like a dumbass playing it, that says something. Good stuff.
