Right now I have no plans to get a PS3...at launch at least. The 360 is just kicking ass and taking names as far as Im concerned. The fact that Sony's online plans are pathetic seal the deal for me. The only, and I mean only, game I really care about from Sony is MLB. I love that game on the PS2. By far the best playing baseball game right now. I don't believe Sony is releasing a PS3 version until 07 so that makes things very easy. By then the price will be lower and I will come a calling :)

This thread covers the availability of 360s pretty closely:

I have no interest in a PS3 but after seeing how things went with the 360 I will definitely be preordering a PS3 to put on ebay.

Zeppo and Sport are right, there is no way that Sony can deliver on all those promises and nail a $400 price point without cutting a lot of corners. I'm sure the PS3 Blu-Ray movie playback will look much better than current DVDs, but I have to believe it will pale in comparison to the quality of dedicated Blu-Ray players. You can only take so much of a loss on hardware, even if it means winning the format war.

The 1080p stuff is also a joke, from the framerate issues to the number of developers that will support it. It's a resolution that is far ahead of games, DVDs, or HDTV right now, and it will probably be years before you see widespread proliferation of 1080p media.

However, I may be forced to buy a PS3 if I can't get my hands on a 360 in the next year :D

Well most people think Sony can't stay within $100 of the X360 but then again, remember how people thought the PSP would be as much as $500?

Sony has certain advantages with internal manufacturing so I wouldn't write off their ability to deliver a competitive price. Then again, with their hubris, if they think people will pay more than $100 more for their product, they would only be hurting their market share prospects.

If dedicated Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players remain well above $500 for the first couple of years, I think a lot of people will be okay with using a console to get movie playback, which should still be way better than any DVD.

As for 1080p, the reason developers wouldn't support that resolution would be because they prefer to apply more effects like more AA, not because higher resolutions take more work for them or the artists per se. Well it would be work to optimize at that resolution but they'd have to optimize at lower resolutions.

It would be an artistic decision more than a technical decision. It would also be a business decision -- whether there are enough 1080p displays to make it worthwhile or whether there's marketing value in a 1080p title.

BTW, there are more and more rumblings that MS may go all out to stop Blu-Ray at all costs.

There's strong suspicion that they bribed HP to get it to support HD-DVD as well as Blu-Ray. There are rumors that they're offering cash incentives to PC makers which ship HD-DVD drives (in essence, subsidizing the HD-DVD adoption which they declined to do with X360).

HD-DVD players were suppose to be out in the fall and then Dec. in Japan. They were delayed because the AACS copy-protection system which will be used by both formats has not been finalized. MS is a prime force in AACS deliberations and there are again rumors that MS would delay AACS to delay Blu-Ray, even if it also hurt HD-DVD in the process.

Finally, there was a report in a reputable Japanese paper a couple of weeks ago that MS would ship an X360 configuration with HD-DVD around the time of the PS3 release. MS has officially denied it (what else could they do).

How badly do they want to stop Blu-Ray that they would risk antagonizing people who've bought X360s with DVD drives?

If they do this, I will simply return my 360 to CompUSA and exchange it for the HD version with my TAP extended warranty. For those that did not get an extended warranty like the one at CompUSA, they will be pissed and rightfully so.....

That rumor about not being able to play used games comes from an old Sony patent which is over 5 years old. So that could have been brought up before the PS2 launched. The PS3 is suppose to be backwards compatible so if it doesn't play used games, backwards compatibility wouldn't work too well.

Sony may have some info. on the PS3 at the CES, which is the first week of January. Or they may concentrate on Blu-Ray there. There is also suppose to be a Playstation meeting of some kind in Japan in Feb.

When they do release info, like the approximate launch date, then you may get retailers taking preorders.

You and me both. If I knew then what I know now I would have preordered 360's out the ying yang the very first day they were available for preorder. Judging from the prices on eBay alot of people had more money than they had sense.
