You only need one XBL account, and it will work for both machines, and any other MS consoles you choose to access it on via memory card or whatever. Being a current XBL member, you will become a 'Gold' member on the 360, whatever that means (I think there is a no-fee level of XBL functionality that allows downloading but not playing online whcih they call 'Silver').
I don't know if you can be signed in on both machines simultaneously, though.

I don't think you can switch the accounts between your two boxes, but I could be wrong. I just went ahead and migrated my Xbox Live account over to my 360 and then set up a new account on my old Xbox.

You might want to consider a three-day or five-day auction, hoping to catch people on the rebound from Christmas who got money as a gift but didn't get a 360.

I almost put this 360 I have on EBAY last night but decided to hold off for a day or so. Here is the thing, I wanted to put it up as a 1 day sale but I didn't see an option to do that. The lowest there was 3 days. Where can I find the option for a 1 day sale?
One day auction is an option. Look a little closer, all sold all of mine that way. I would try to post it a quick as you can as the value of these things is dropping fast.
Just a quick update on my extra 360...I was going to EBAY it but at the last minute I ended up selling it to my best friend's sister - who has an 18 year old son. I've known them forever so it felt good to hook her up with the console at cost. She couldn't find one anywhere so needless to say she was excited. I just shipped it to her overnight so she'll have it for Christmas. So in the end, the Christmas Spirit overwhelmed EBAY greed "And to all a good night!"
So I was in Walmart here in Syracuse around 1pm today to pick up some wrapping paper and bows. While there the following announcement is made: "Attention Walmart Shoppers! We have just received 4 Xbox 360 premium systems. They are available now in electronics for $399". So I stroll on by--get there maybe 25 seconds after the announcement and grab the 3rd one. All 4 gone in 40-50 sec tops.
I'll likely put it up on ebay this weekend...I may try to sell it locally tomorrow but my wife is working and I have the kids all day. I realize the value is declining but hopefully I can sell it for 525-550 and make 100 from it. Too late to get in on ebay and shipped for Xmas but I agree with PK that someone's going to get money from mom/dad/grandma and want to spend it.
As for me, I'll likely pick one up for myself in the summer. Though having just seen the screens of college hoops, its tempting to hold onto this baby.
