Make that two! I never owned a PS1 and I played MGS, GT1, GT2, ISS Pro Evolution, J&L Racing, Hot Shots 1, and NBA Live 2000 on PS2 while I waited for the PS2 library to mature. In fact, I only owned 3 PS2 games until 9 months after launch.

EA was a high priority for them. That's why you don't see any 2K or MS sports titles on the list.

Make it 3. Even though I finally sold my PS2, I still have the first 2 Oddworld games, just in case I ever go back to a PSX or PS2. I also had Rollcage II, dodgeball, and a couple others that were just too much fun, regardless of the graphics.

Wow, I own exactly 2 games that are going to be backward compatible at launch. 8O Halo and Halo 2.

I would love it if all of the EA Sports and 2k titles make it on there eventually. I'm a little surprised at the list, but not really disappointed, provided MS keeps their promise in adding more and more Xbox games to the list over time (please certify more 2K and EA Sports titles, please).

I think its true that backward compatibility makes for good PR, even though most people don't really use it. At least with the 360 you get some visual benefit for the Xbox games that are supported, which is more than can be said for the PSX and PS2.

Let's see how MS came through on its promise of backward compatibility from E3 in May:

>>>>>

"Xbox.com: At E3, Microsoft said Xbox 360 would run the "top-selling Xbox games." What did you mean by that?

Todd Holmdahl, corporate VP, Xbox group: That's a fair question. We've been working hard to certify as many original Xbox games to work on Xbox 360 as possible. This process is a detailed procedure that we're committed to, but it means that not every game is going to be ready on day one.

Naturally we started with the games that have sold the best and the ones with a large Xbox Live® following.

<<<<<

Here's the list of most popular current Xbox Live games from Oct. 15, 2005, the last time Xbox.com ran this list (site was redesigned and relaunched about two weeks after Oct. 15). I have put the BC titles on this list in bold:

1 Halo 2
2 Madden NFL 2006
3 Far Cry Instincts
4 Rainbow Six 4: Lockdown
5 Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike
6 Counter-Strike
7 Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Demo
8 Forza Motorsport
9 Tom Clancy`s Splinter Cell CT
10 Rainbow Six: Black Arrow
11 Tom Clancy`s Ghost Recon 2
12 Burnout Revenge
13 NBA 2K6
14 ESPN NFL 2K5
15 NCAA Football 2006
16 Rainbow Six 3
17 FIFA 06
18 Project Gotham Racing 2
19 Delta Force: Black Hawk Down
20 X-Men […]

Three out of the top 20 are BC at launch. That's commitment to making the most-popular XBL titles backward compatible?

No, it's not. It's paying lip service to BC and encouraging the sale of more 360 software.

Again, I don't blame MS one bit. It's in the business of making money. But the MS spin of how this BC list is so incredible, so wonderful cracks me up.

Then again, I'm in the PR business, so I probably would do it the same way. But hopefully we can all see through the spin and realize that this list of BC titles will splinter the Xbox Live community into those with a 360 and those without.

I stand by my prediction of the "Great XBL Schism" today more than ever, especially for those Xbox 360 owners who are selling their Xboxes now.

Honestly, I feel bad for a racing game fan who sold their Xbox thinking many good racing titles would be BC. Because if PGR 3 becomes overrun online with pukes who play bumper cars and all you own is a 360, then you better be a BIG fan of Forza if you enjoy racing on XBL. I can't believe Burnout 3, Rallisport 2 or any of the EA NASCAR games aren't on the initial BC list. Maybe soon. I sure hope so!

One other side effect of this list: I predict eBay will become flooded with Xbox titles this weekend and early next week, dropping prices. I think some gamers were holding on to portions of their Xbox libraries, figuring some of the top and recent games would be BC. Now that they aren't, and MS has given no indication when they will be other than "we're working on it," I think a lot of gamers will say "F*ck it" and just give up on their Xbox titles, dumping them on eBay and just focusing on 360 titles.

If you're a seller of Xbox games, I think your profits will drop. If you're a buyer of Xbox games, it's a buyers' market. I think you'll get some pretty nice games at sweet prices because there will be a lot of listings.

Enough. I'm done with this topic. Honest!

Take care,
PK

For me, this is the best thing about the 360 launch. Now I'll be able to get more great games even cheaper :D

And PS2 game prices will drop too for that matter.

Which is exactly why I listed all my games last week. Minus MVP 2005, just can't dump it yet until I see what crap is released for the 360 next year. I need to have a backup plan in case they are pure sh*t.

Don't you have MVP for the PC? That would be my back up plan. With all the great mods available, I just can't go back to this game on anything but the PC.

I'm glad I dumped all my games last week on ebay. I made out pretty good. Only games I have left are Links and Halo 2. Hopefully Links is added to the list because no way i'm buying Tiger Woooo.

Nope...I hate how EA Sports games run on the PC. They did some lazy ass programming so it's never as smooth as it should be, and I have a pretty nice system. Sure, I'd love all the mods (thanks hh2004 for the memories), but I can live with the best baseball game ever made on the Xbox. Plus I'm still hanging on to the box for Arena football and College baseball...so I'm stuck with it anyway.
