OT: Joe Horn´s cell phone act.
A lighter OT topic.

Anyone catch Joe Horn and his cell phone act on Sunday night?

He planted a cell phone in the pads wrapped around the goal posts and after scoring,he grabbed it and pulled his stunt.

Should he be fined? What are your thoughts on these staged celebrations?

I am old school and if I played for the Giants I would have rammed that cell phone up his ass. But that´s me.
Exactly, but since non of the Giants seemd to care(at least on the field) then people should stop bitching about it. He will be fined no doubt.

None of the Giants have seemed to care for the last month and a half, so I wouldn´t use that as a judging post.

I´m sure I´m in the minority on this one, since we live in such a "me first" society, but I thought his "act" was classless and the epitome of poor sportsmanship, and a terrible message to participants in youth sports today. That stuff is all fun in a video game, but in real life, people should have more respect for each other and for the game.

I´m definitely "old school," in this respect...

OT: Joe Horn´s cell phone act.
Someone should have grabbed that cell phone from Horn´s hand and smashed it like Belushi smashed the folk guitar being used to play "My Love Was Like a Cherry" on the stairs during the frat party in "Animal House."

The only difference is that the smasher then wouldn´t say, "Sorry," to Horn like Belushi did to the folk singer. And then the smasher should have body-slammed Joe Horn for being such a pompous ass.

I´m old-school all the way. Act like you´ve been there before.

What galls me is that Joe Horn admitted afterward that he knew exactly what he was doing, that he would be fined for it and that he wouldn´t change a thing. Oh, his team received a penalty for the showboating.

Nice team player. What a f*ck.

P.S.: Can you imagine what Lambert, Butkus or Mike Curtis would have done to Horn if they were on the field during that kind of s***? It wouldn´t have been pretty, but it would have been beautiful, if you know what I mean.

P.P.S.: I also find it unbelievably ironic that Ickey Woods was quoted in a story this morning about the incident, criticizing Horn. Yeah, OK, Mr. Ickey Shuffle. Another dick.

OT: Joe Horn´s cell phone act.
Typical NFL ego-maniac.

Question... What´s worse:

Horn´s Cell Phone idiocy or TJ Duckett celebrating after scoring a meaningless touchdown to make the score of the Falcons/Colts game something like 31-7.

Duckett scores to defy Indy the shutout, then hops around and puts his ear to the crowd as if to say"I can´t hear you now!" The score was 31-0 at the time. (Or close to that). 100% on the dorkometer.

The older I get, the less I like pro sports because I find myself rooting for players that I don´t like. (The Blue Jackets being an exception to that rule.) I no longer watch the NBA. I only watch Browns games. Steroids have made baseball a complete and utter joke.

I love the Browns--have since I was old enough to know what football was but when I see Earl Little pick off a pass on Monday Night against the Rams, his 5th of the season, look into the camera and say, "Pro Bowl baby!" My stomach turns. Earl, we were 4 and freaking 8 at the time! 4-8! We´re now 4-10. Who cares if you go to the damn Pro Bowl? Now all the Browns have to do is draft Kellen "The Soldier" Winslow Jr. so I can be done with the team for good. I cannot root for that "man". It will take some serious soul searching on my part to cheer for Winslow. That might be the final straw for me.

I´m watching HBO the other night and they had that Rebels of Oakland documentary showing, and I´m watching the films of those Raider teams of the 70s and there was no bullshit about those players. Better still, catch the HBO documentary on the early days of the NFL. The 40s and 50s and 60s Hoo boy can you imagine Butkus doing a celebration dance after he makes a TACKLE? These guys dance a jig after doing their job. I think the next time I write a great review I´m gonna go outside and dance around the backyard, and taunt the mailman as he comes up to deliver my issue of Computer Games Magazine.

"Check out my review of NHL 2004 in this issue. I punked the guy from PC Gamer! Where´s my cell phone., I gotta call my editor and tell him I´m the man!"

javi I am bitching because I love the game. The lack of sportsmanship is sicking. Kevin I am with you brother.

I watched an 8 year old on my son´s team high step into the endzone then pose while a teammate faked liked his was taking his picture. Where did he get that idea?

The great thing about this incident was the touchdown was called back, they put the ball on the 15 for unsportsman like conduct. The next play he fumbled and they lost the game by 6. His teammates made sure he didn´t do that again.

Joe Horn used Madden 04 in his argument with Dan Patrick about his antics. That made me think these guys are pre-scripting this s*** to get it put into a video game! Talk about having no respect for the game.

Like PK said it cost his team 15 yards. Could you see Walter Payton pulling a stunt like that?

What was more hilarious to me is that Horn admitted that he was publicly critical of the "Sharpie" incident last year. I guess if you can´t beat em, join em.

The TJ Duckett incident was far worse. As a Falcons fan it was completely embarassing. With Indianpolis as my home town/birth place, I am glad I can also claim them as my team and pretend that I am not a Falcons fan for now.

[ This message was edited by: DChaps on 16-12-2003 12:39 ]

They really need to start suspending these guys for stuff like this. Any celebration involving a prop is an automatic one-game suspension. Fines won´t solve the problem, but I´ll bet a trip to the pine would.

I agree that the G-men should have drilled his ass. They were already getting killed -- I think a little head-hunting P.I. would have done the trick.

I don´t mind celebration -- I used to live in DC when the Smurfs did their high-five act -- but it is ridiculous when your team is sucking big time.

I remember when Keyshawn Johnson scored his first TD. It was when the Jets were in the middle of a one or two loss season, and this moron takes off his helmet and starts running around the endzone like he´s in Jerry Maguire. That´s around the time when this stuff started to get ridiculous.

Another thing to remember about this is, Horn could find the cell phone at first. Micheal Lewis shook the foam padding and picked up the phone and handed it to Horn. Should he be fined too?
OT: Joe Horn´s cell phone act.
I agree that it was classless. Same with Duckett. Along the same line of thought, on Sportscenter this morning they were discussing the Ricky Davis trade and showed footage of him intentionally missing on shot on his own basket thinking it would get him the rebound he needed for a triple-double. Same thing. Pro players in all sports are turning into me first, look at me losers.

From gawking at a home run, to screaming at the camera after a dunk, to the post tackle dance, sportsmanship is out the window. I think it has to do with the fact that the leagues come down harder on those that try to "teach them a lesson" than it does on the instigator. If someone has wrecked Joe Horn for pulling the phone out, you know his fine would be greater than Horn´s.

I guess I´ll play minority here and say that I thought it was funny as hell. First he couldn´t find the damn phone, his teammate had to shake it out of the goalpost, then he picks it up and starts banging on the keys like he´s really calling someone and holds it to his helmet like he could possibly hear someone.

I don´t know, the whole thing just made me laugh. And that´s a good thing during such a shitty-ass blowout game as that one.

I rarely take the things athletes say or do seriously. To me, they are one step removed from pro wrestlers.

In my opinion, TJ Duckett is a bigger idiot than Joe Horn. Mind you, they are both idiots, but he is just the bigger of the two. Celebrating a touchdown when your down 31 -7 is just beyond stupid.

Joe Horn´s antics are idiotic in that I just did not find it very creative. It´s been done already with the Sharpie last season.

Chad Johnson, on the other hand, I found very funny. I thought it was a great way for him to stick it to the NFL for all of the stupid fines that they have levied upon him.

Bill, I am a huge Browns fan also, bu even though I felt a little uneasy about Earl Little´s celebration on MNF, but I am so pleased that this team has not quit this year.

They could have bagged their season after the Steeler game last month, but have fought hard against far superior teams the last two weeks, unlike the NY football Giants who basically have quit playing three weeks ago.

It is an utter embarassment that there was no retaliation directed against Joe Horn, ala the Cowboy player drilling T.O. on the 50 yd line.

Sorry for the long post.

I´m just as appalled at the lack of retaliation on the Giants part as I am of Horn´s classless antic. It seems like none of these players really has any heart for the game or for their team. They figure Horn could be a teammate next year, or next week one of their guys will do something similar, so they all sit back like it´s no big deal.

After all, they´re still getting paid, and that´s all that matters to most of them. They play hard in order to get the next big contract.

If I was the DB after that, I´d run back onto the field, smash the phone over Horn´s head (after removing his helmet of course), and happily take the 15 yards back.

I hate the NBA, but Tim Duncan is my current hero. Too bad I can´t think of any others in the NBA. Hell, I can´t think of many others in ANY pro sport.

No the Browns haven´t quit, and those that don´t really follow the team may think I´m crazy, but the Browns are a few offensive linemen (and a new OC) away from being a very, very good football team. I can´t believe how injury prone that team has been since they returned to the league.

But a lot of teams can say that they are "close" to being playoff contenders. In today´s NFL, nearly every team in the league is a few ball bounces away from being in the playoffs. When you see a team like Cleveland at 4-10 you automatically think "lousy team". And while the record surely is, the Browns could have (and very well should have) beaten the Colts, Steelers, Patriots, Rams, and Broncos. All of those games were very much winnable late in the game and for whatever reason, the Browns lost.

The teams are closer in talent now than they have ever been. Now whether or not that´s a good thing I guess is a matter of debate. But the Browns are a very young team that should get nothing but better with the core players that are there.

I just really, really hope that Davis passes on Winslow. Scary thing, we need a TE, but the draft is loaded with quality TEs so hopefully he´ll go Oline and take Gallery if he´s available and try to get Troupe, Hartsock or Utecht in the later rounds.

matthewk, they´re out there you just have to look hard to find them. I think hockey has a lot of team oriented players; I rarely see a lot of self-finger pointing at a Jacket´s game. RIck Nash leads the league in goals (or did a few nights ago) and he´s a superb young man--for a 19 year old you gotta like seeing that.

Of course hockey has its jerks too. I mean Federov leaving Detroit because the Wings had too many star players? WTF?

Bill,

Not to hijack the thread , but you are so right on the Browns. 5 players out for the season after the Rams game is just unreal. They just seem to have so many problems with injuries. The 2001 season was the same way.

The way I see it, besides the injuries, the whole William Green fiasco, and the stupid switch to Holcomb this team is the same as last years. The only difference being that they won the close games last season.

I also agree that their number one concern should be the offensive line. There also might be temptation to go after Manning or the Miami, OH QB but they´ve got to get that line stronger if they are ever going to compete. Besides, I have been and always will be a Couch fan.

I thought it was hysterical, myself, and I generally find the more involved post-touchdown celebrations hysterical (and they rarely touch the post goal soccer celebrations). I have no problems with TO running to the Dallas star, and I have no problem with Dallas taking a shot at him for it.

The one thing I don´t particularly care for is players celebrating excessively when they are getting their asses kicked in a game- celebrating when you make it 21-10 is firing your team up to get them in the game, but doing so at 31-7 is bad judgement.

But all in all I will never have a problem with end zone celebrations, and the more inventive the better.

Bad judgment? Renting "Teen Wolf" is bad judgment. What Duckett did was act like a self-important twit. A lot of people agree with you that football is mere entertainment and that these guys should be able to act however they see fit in terms of post-play celebration. But to me there´s a line. I can´t define that line, but I know when it´s crossed when I see it.

I loved the Washington Fun Bunch High Five after a TD. I hated when Peter Warrick took a "fake snap shot" of Chad Johnson posing after a TD earlier this year. I´m all for a TD spike. I´m not so much for breakdancing after a touchdown. I love the Lambeau Leap. I hate jumping around like a bush leaguer after making a tackle 10 yards down the field. I´m OK with the back flip after a TD. I´m not so much for Horn´s cell phone drama and Owens´ Sharpie signing. I´m Pro slam dunking the ball over the goal post after a score. I´m anti anything that Kelly Washington does after he makes a catch of any kind. I´m Pro Billy White Shoes Johnson, if for no other reason than originality. I´m anti Ickey Woods. The shuffle took too long...line crossed.

Of course my favorite way to behave is that of Barry Sanders. You score. You toss the ball to the official and buckle your chin strap and try to do it again the next time.

I´ve been a Browns fan my whole life (I´m from Northern Ohio), I was sickened by Earl Little and his "prediction" about the Pro Bowl. No way; he sucks, and that was his first interception of the year. In addition, don´t worry about Davis drafting Winslow - Winslow has talent, so Davis will pass on him for some Division III QB, or something (could you imagine Mike Doss at SS instead of Chaun Thompson on the bench? No 300 yards for Lewis!). Davis´ poor decision making is alarming to me. Drafting "Big Money" (who has more penalties than tackles) Gerard Warren, Chaun Thompson, William Green, et al, plus cutting Kevin Johnson, the QB shuffle, etc. I think that he and Policy are two guys that think they are smarter than everyone else, and only end up fooling themselves with their decisions. All that said, there is potential here, but the O-line needs to get healthy next year, and they need some depth. A good fullback would be nice, too.
That was actually his 5th INT, but I´ll still be shocked if he even smells the Pro Bowl hot dogs, let alone play in the game.

I have no issue whatsoever with us releasing Kevin Johnson. We don´t miss him, and he wouldn´t block or run routes worth a damn. And we couldn´t even get a 3rd round pick for him before the season started (we tried to trade him to KC). We don´t miss him at all with the receivers we have.

Now, the Thompson pick, yeah I don´t get that at all. And we shouldn´t be surprised at what William Green has done to himself. Bad pick.; that said, we don´t lose much with James Jackson and I think Suggs is going to be a real player.

The QB thing, I think Davis in the end made the wrong call, but no one knew that Holcomb would end up being the kind of guy that simply cannot be a starter. He´s Frank Reich. In the end I think this will be a very good thing for Couch, and it´s not like if Couch had played this year that we´d somehow be in the thick of the playoff race. Taking this year to watch the games instead of taking another arbitrary pounding might help him. Of course, it´s still not even close to a 100% lock that Couch is even in Cleveland next season.

As for Warren, I find it downright odd that he plays the best game of his career when we´re 4-9 and out of the playoff race. He looked like a different player against Denver.

And yes this has nothing at all to do with the thread topic. Pbbthh!

LOL, Bill, you´re right about Little... I should´ve said "like" his first interception, or something.

We´ll have to disagree about KJ. I thought he was a solid route-runner, with the best hands on the team. More importantly, he was a "go to" guy for Couch. He didn´t have the big play ability of the other guys, but I felt he was at least dependable, and that´s big with all the 3rd-and-long´s the Browns get.

I´m not sold on James Jackson. I think White is a better runner, but it´s all moot if the O-line doesn´t improve. In the end, I agree about Suggs - he may be the best of the lot.

What bothers me about Holcomb is that they seemingly made the decision based upon one game - against Pitt in the playoffs. Lots of NFL players can have a great game; there was a reason it´s been 8 years in the league and Holcomb has never seen significant time. At least we knew Couch was average. Instead, this year, we had to wait for Holcomb to prove that he was below-average as a starter.

Lastly, regarding Warren, didn´t Davis say his *best* game was against Baltimore this year? Davis´ spin-doctoring is another reason I don´t like him. Anyway, what Warren did against Denver is what I´d expect to see regularly from him.

Oh, and I´m sorry for going off-topic; I just love the Browns!
