Ok Which College BBall Game Offers More?

Post by Bill_Abner »

grtwhtsk, I don´t think any of the MM rosters have the freshmen in them. I tried 2 of them and they both were just names of the players already in the game, complete with the wrong classes for a lot of them. I´m just at the point where I´m passing on this year´s basketball games and sticking to NCAA 2004, Tiger Woods, and NHL for my graphics glitz fix until the baseball games come out. I just think the hoop games are all terribly mediocre right now.

Thanks Bill.

Can you not create players in MM 2004? If you can, I don´t see why there wouldn´t be any rosters out there with the missing Freshman. Also, I take it you can´t edit the Class Year to correct the mistakes that are already inherent.
I think you’re selling College Hoops a little short. I’m not going to argue that the gameplay is great. Yes, players stand around a little too much on the AI offensive end but I can’t think of anything that’s a real disaster on the court.

But in terms of the total package and considering the title as a “game”, I think it’s fabulous. Compared to NCAA 2004, there are a number of things in CH that go way beyond NCAA 2004 and would make that game even better that it already is. Like …

- In-season recruiting. This raises the bar for all college sports games. How much more fun would NCAA 2004 be if you had to recruit and play at the same time, and watch your performance on the field affect your recruiting in near real-time? This is a quantum leap in my opinion.

- Ability to set the length for simulated games. This would be hugely welcome in NCAA 2004.

- Historical records for all teams in the game.

Granted, there are some things in CH that they need to add, like more alternate jerseys, a little more team-specific commentary (adding team names once in a while), and a feature that manually sets the foul limit on bonus free throw shooting you can get into the bonus faster on shorter length games. And yes, there are money plays, or at least money strategies, but NCAA 2004 has them too. All in all, I think this is a pretty darn good game.

Now Playing: NCAA Football 2004, ESPN College Hoops ... Go MIZZOU!

Grt,

Gotta hand it you. I give you mad props for holding out and trying to find out what college basketball is more to your liking. By the way, I apologize for not replying to your e-mail. Got kinda busy with work and family stuff.

I jumped into Legacy mode the other with CH. All I can say is wow! Very very cool. I´ve never explored legacy and/or franchise before in any game. To begin with, you´re only allowed to pick from a handful of bottom feeder teams....(Cornell, Buffalo, etc). I went with UMKC....or as they refer to them in the game Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos.

You can edit your coach´s name and pick from a list of different facial profiles to match up what he looks like in real life. Or close to. Your next job is to select two assistant coaches. Easy, right? Not really. I´d say more than 80% of the available assistant coaches will decline your offer. It´s rather insulting and frusturating, but would you really want to be an assistant for the Roos? LOL. Plus, you can view their fortes...whether it be in recruiting, gameplanning, etc. They´re all graded with As Bs Cs and Ds. Most likely you won´t land an assistant with As, but you never know. There´s also an excerpt about their specialities and talents. Nice detail.

So, once your assistants are chosen, it´s off to check out your roster. Not a whole lot of talent there to start. Therefore, you better start forming a gameplan as to where you wish to upgrade.

The AD will let you know what he expects you to accomplish for the upcoming year. For me, it´s to win 50% of my games, keep the players happy by giving them enoug playing time, and of course recruiting a competitive freshmen class.

I found I was invited to participate in a pre-season tourney in Syracuse. My first opponent was Minnesota. Not a power house team by any stretch of the imagination, but compared to the Roos, they´re a strong team. What was cool was that my top assistant in terms of gameplanning broke Minnesota´s top players down. Who to watch, who to play tight D on, their top scorer, etc. This way, you´re not going into the game blindsided.

I hung with Minnesota pretty well...even leading by as many as four points into the second half. I finally lost composure with about 5 minutes remaining in the game (players not hitting their shots, my go to player was being closely guarded and wasn´t able to get off many open shots, etc). I ended up losing by 7 points but came away from the game excited about how I faired.

What was cool about playing in Syracuse was that the stadium wasn´t filled...lots of empty seats. There were a hell of lot more Gopher fans present. Every trip down the floor seemed like it meant something. The atmosphere was pretty electric, and it felt like a pre-season tournament game.

The game played like a real college game. I maybe noticed one poor animation under the basket, but that was it.

On a side note, I´ve noticed if you hold the turbo button while pressing the shoot button under the basket, you´re more likely to go up strong.

Dan,

No problem bud...thanks for the input. It is VERY hard to hold out on picking up a college hoops title. I just want to make the "right" choice for me. I´m still looking for any input I can get.
Just a option not mentioned so far, have you ever considered gamefly.com? I have noticed you are one to ask alot of questions about games and looking for feedback on games so this might suit your needs.

If you are not familiar with gamefly it works like netflix (though the companies are not related. For $21.95 a month you get to have 2 games at one time. They pay all the shipping (both ways) and you can send games back and forth as many times as you like.

So you could rent both games to start off with and if you dont like them return them for some others, or you can always keep one and buy the copy you have at a discounted price. They will mail you the box and instructions.

And there is even a ten day trial so if you want to use it simply to rent these two games, send them back and cancel the trial you can do so for free.

Opinions and feedback are great but nothing compares to playing the game for yourself and determining which is best.
