NCAA 2006 DSP League...?
Moderators: Bill_Abner, ScoopBrady
Guys,
I used this site to help schedule my 20+ player MVP leagues last year:
http://www.devenezia.com/downloads/roun ... rounds.php
Make the number of teams even by adding a "Bye" team and reverse the numbers to have everyone play twice at "Home" and "Away".
I had another link with a forumla, but the site is no longer live. I'll see if I can find an alternative or if I have a printout somewhere.

Here's another way:
Assign a number to each team, starting at 1 and incrementing by 1, e.g (1..Arsenal, 2..Aston Villa, 3.. Bolton, 4..Chelsea, 5..Wrexham)
2. If the number of teams is odd, add 1 so that the last number is even. (There is now a team 6 - called a "ghost team")
3. On paper, write out the numbers sequentially. In VB - or any other language bar assembler - create an array of size 6 and assign each number to separate array element, i.e.
0 1 2 3 4 5 <-Array Element
1 2 3 4 5 6 <-Number
or (on paper)
1 2 3 4 5 6
4. To generate fixtures for round 1, pair teams with an equal "distance" from the left and right borders, i.e. the left-most team plays the right-most team, the 2nd-left-most team plays the 2nd-right-most team etc. The fixtures for the first round then reads
1 vs 6 (team 1 - Arsenal - doesn't play in this round)
2 vs 5
3 vs 4
5. To schedule subsequent rounds, keep the left-most number (which is always number '1') fixed and shift all other numbers 1 position to the right. The right-most number "wraps around." Repeat above fixture-generating method. For round 2, then, we get
1 6 2 3 4 5
and the fixtures are
1 vs 5
6 vs 4
2 vs 3
6. The fixtures of every even round should be reversed so that the original home team is away and vice versa. For round 2, then, the games are:
5 vs 1
4 vs 6
3 vs 2
Repeat until you have a complete schedule.
It is mathematically impossible (in non-trivial cases) to have a complete set of perfect home/away sequences, i.e. so that each team play at home then away then home etc. The above algorithm generates near-perfect sequences, though.
This problem is known, by the way, as a Round Robin scheduling problem. If you're mathematically inclined you can always look up "graph colouring" in any decent Combinatorial Analysis textbook.

an EMPHATIC "NO" to even teams
Also...one suggestion if I may...Is it possible to get a specific forum here JUST for the league so it would be easier to find and stay on top of league related issues...Also in the time zone thread everyone needs to check in...I wouldn't do a whole lot more until you lock down just who is gonna really be committed.
Once you get a dedicated forum here then you might want to start requiring that people check in...I would just hate to see you do all this work and not be sure of having a committed buc=nch of guys..Lock down the committed ballers first then the schedules and all that stuff can be handled...There are programs and such that cabn do all that...Just my .02
Realistically there is NO hurry to get this going...Take your time...do it right and make sure you get a committed bunch of guys 1st and foremost...Scheduling and all that can be done easily once you get the most important issues dealt with and thats finding out who is serious. The game has been out one week and as always there will be people who will lose interest quick...The more time you take in doing this right will provide you with more serious committed ballers that won't waste your time and efforts to run a good league. relax guys and don't get overwhelmed:
1. Decide what type of League you want
2. Develop some General Rules (Heisman level etc)
3. Make sure you get committed ballers
4. Explore website/forum home bases for the league
5. determine length and format of season
6. Find help and assistance from participants who are willing to do so
Don't rush yourselves because I can tell you right now that there are ballers on your list who are not committed. We need the forum so you can REQUIRE people to check in thus gauging their commitment...For example the Time Zone thread...what checked in 15?...Like I said lets lock in who's really serious and try to cut the dead weight..I'd rather have a solid 15 as opposed to a flakey 50

Also..iT would save alot of time to know what level this league will be played on because I know for some playing on AA is not an option...I really only do Heisman but I know some people love AA or whatever...If there can be a decision made on things like that it would allow some people to decide if they would want to participate from the very beginning...Thanks
Excuse me for making a SUGGESTION...as someone who used San Jose State for an entire season in the SR league back in 2004, it was EXTREMELY frustrating to call a great play, only to have the results sabotaged by my players' ratings. I just feel bad for those folks who picked a non-top 25 team...with the bigger discrepencies between powerhouses and cupcakes this year, it could be a long season for those guys.CerealKillah wrote:an EMPHATIC "NO" to even teams
I was just thinking maybe we can try something different and have a league based on skill. I totally understand if you guys are against it...but you didn't have to post "emphatic no" in capital letters twice...I guess I'll just shut-up now, then.

Or you could leave and stop your damn complaining. Toper is right...a simple "No" would probably have sufficed on the Even Teams deal.CerealKillah wrote:Also..iT would save alot of time to know what level this league will be played on because I know for some playing on AA is not an option...I really only do Heisman but I know some people love AA or whatever...If there can be a decision made on things like that it would allow some people to decide if they would want to participate from the very beginning...Thanks

No doubt. I also think it's funny as hell that his answer was an EMPHATIC "NO" and his team is rated an A-. I wonder what his answer would be if his team was rated a B-.dbdynsty25 wrote:Or you could leave and stop your damn complaining. Seems to me that Cheerios is going to b*tch and complain no matter who runs the league or what settings they have. It's just not going to matter.ScoopBrady wrote:No doubt. Hah Hah great stuff. The guys name is Cereal Killer and you called him Cheerios. Whew oh man I did not see that one coming. Well anyway just wanted to LOL, now I will go back into hiding. Best of luck with the league, especially if BTKrispies is calling the shots.dbdynsty25 wrote:Seems to me that Cheerios is going to b*tch and complain no matter who runs the league or what settings they have. I'll be glad to drop my team ...In fact we can have a draft and all re-select fair and square..I've never been a fan of the 1st come 1st serve method of getting a team but this aint my league so I chose a team just like anyone else...It doesn't matter to me what team I have..thats irrelevant to me...So please don't think my response is based on the fact that I have tennessee...I'll trade them for the right team or if I had a D rated team I still wouldn't want EVEN teams.ScoopBrady wrote:No doubt. Also..who's bitching?...I'm simply addressing the facts..if 50+ are in the league and only 13-15 have enough commitment to check in for the Time Zone request what does that maybe tell ya?
It would simply be useless to do all this work prior to knowing if you REALLY have a group of committed guys...Also its a given that alot of guys are no longer interested..thats in any league...Third and lastly a rough estimate of what the setting will be will allow another few ballers to decide if they are willing to play under certain guidelines.
For example..what level are most of you playing on in head to head?...

It tells me that the thread was started on a Saturday (this place is SLOW on weekends) and it's only been two days. Go tell me how long this league thread has been going to garner 50+ responses...looks like July 4th to me...a nice and cool 13 days.CerealKillah wrote:Also..who's bitching?...I'm simply addressing the facts..if 50+ are in the league and only 13-15 have enough commitment to check in for the Time Zone request what does that maybe tell ya?
And most everyone is playing on All-American in online play.
Cereal,
Hey, no offense taken. But typing your opinion in CAPITAL LETTERS TWICE IN ONE THREAD (now 3 times) makes you look like a "my way or the highway" kind of guy. To be honest, your posts sound like you're taking all this league stuff a little too seriously, which goes against why we're doing this in the first place (ie for "fun").
Anyways, to address some of your other points:
1. Decide what type of League you want (This league is strictly for fun...no cash prizes will be awarded to the winner. If you're a "win at all cost" kind of guy, or if you're a stat-whore playing to make half your starting lineup into league leaders, then this league is not for you)
2. Develop some General Rules (Heisman level etc) (This one is easy...All DEFAULT settings for ranked games, DEFAULT PLAYBOOKS, and DEFAULT LINEUPS...no taking 10 minutes before a game to change your starters...I think this is very inconsiderate when people do this. Also, you must kick on 4th down (unless behind in the 4th qtr)...no exceptions to this)
3. Make sure you get committed ballers (not gonna happen...there will always be attrition in a league, especially if it's for fun. The best thing we could do is probably just "fire" coaches as the season goes along if they stop playing games)
4. Explore website/forum home bases for the league (There's already a blogsite up for the league...or am I just wasting my time? If you didn't know this then READ all related league posts/suggestions, especially before coming in here and making your own. And if you did know that there was a site but just didn't like it/thought you can do better, let me know and I'll gladly turn over the reigns)
5. determine length and format of season (Play everyone in your division at least once, plus some out of division opponents. At the end slot people into bowls based on records/coach-voted rankings. I don't think schedules are gonna work...having set game nites and scheduling games with those you see in lobbies is probably the way to go. We can have a mandatory requirement for games per week, and those who don't comply are dropped.
6. Find help and assistance from participants who are willing to do so (I absolutely welcome this. If anyone wants publishing access to the blog, let me know (you have to register for this). And for those who don't want to register, I've set it up so that anyone can leave comments at will.)
Also, I disagree (not emphatically) about taking our time for the league. Alot of the DSP cats here do not hold on to games for long and/or like to trade stuff in. The one month gap before madden comes out is the best time to get this league going, before people start to scatter for madden, school, xbox 360, etc)
And I don't think Zep, AtXj, Jason, or anyone else is "wasting their time" with all the work/suggestions. We do it because we love sports gaming, and we know what an online league can become with a good group (guys from SR 2004 know what I'm talking about).
Anyways, I appreciate your feedback...just remember that there's a fine line between "suggesting" and "dictating".

guys, fun is definitely where I want it, especially since My Aztecs aren't exactly going to light it up.
I am away for a few days plus I haven't been able to play NCAA in 8 days due to my XBOX problems...hopefully I'll have it fixed by next weekend.
Thaks to all, Toper, Zep, etc. for your hard work.
Remember, THIS IS FOR FUN!!!!!!!
Haha, caps...gotta love 'em.

Let's cut the animosity down guys.
As for a "leagues" forum, we can do that. But I want to get a general consensus and see if people want a separate league forum, or if they want that stuff in this forum, or if we want to use the DSP blog site for that kind of stuff. Let me know what you want to do re: this, and we'll see.
And thanks Toper for running this stuff. We all really appreciate it.

Just an FYI, we will be using the divisional method according to timezone as suggested by Zeppo.

Thanks for the kind words. Just trying to give back...I hope I could do half the job that pac/blub did for us 2 yrs ago (if you guys are lurking, thanks again).
Anyways, I don't see a need for a separate forum. Just an official results thread is fine. I'm sure guys who aren't in the league would love to read up on it anyways. Everything else can be posted on the blog...I'm looking at giving atxj and zep publishing access...if anyone else wants it, let me know.

Partial to what I said earlier.
Zeppo and I have the divisions and schedule partially down on paper.
However, we are in no hurry to get things rushed together only to end up with holes that pop up later down the road. We want to give everyone a chance to post in the timezone thread by the end of tomorrow seeing as how alot of folks only check the site at work and haven't been on the board over the weekend. There are also a few more people that changed their minds about their team and we want to get all of that cleared up over the next day or two.
I know we are all anxious to get started but we would like to make sure that we head into this with a solid group of guys and a solid format to go along with that. Give us a little more time and a little more input from everyone and we will be up and running in no time. Be sure to stay active on the boards and stay up to date with any recent league news.
Also...
Jared, I think it would be best to have a seperate portion of the forum for the league. This will result in less mess on the regular board and make things easier for everyone to find in the league.
Toper, excellent job to date. I will keep you as up to date as possible with all news and media related to the league.
