OT: What are you listening to?

Post by pk500 »

Boys:

Some of the best threads here and at SR have been about our musical tastes. I´ve been exposed to a ton of music that I never would have heard without your recommendations.

So, what are you listening to these days? What killer stuff should we have tuned in or downloaded or, gasp, even buy?

I´ve been listening to more streaming audio lately than MP3, trying to be exposed to more stuff. My streams have consisted of:

Shoutcast.com -- Techno and trance. Radio XTC London is superb. So is Shoutcast -- best streaming radio site on the Net, if you ask me.

KKJZ.org -- The best pure, classic jazz station in America. None of that porno-film soundtrack smooth jazz s***.

Talksport.co.uk -- The ESPN Radio of the U.K. Gotta get my daily footie fix!

On the MP3 player, Johnny Cash and The Corrs seem to be the staples lately. I´m also getting into Soulive, a very good jazz/funk band.

How about you guys?

Take care,
PK

[ This message was edited by: pk500 on 04-10-2003 08:17 ]

I´m really enjoying the streams too. Nice variety and a lot of quality music out there.

You probably know I´m gonna veer towards the younger music, but I love music so much that I can´t help but hop in on this thread. I´ll just list some bands I´ve been listening to.

No Knife-San Diego band that never enjoyed much success but made 4 excellent full-lengths starting back in ´95, all of which I´ve picked up in the last year. Pretty much just rock with sharp guitars and a dreamy instrumental here and there. Has become one of my favorite bands, though.
Velvet Teen-Lame name i know, but has been compared to Radiohead. 21ish year old with a falsetto voice at times, mainly slower music. Hard to describe, like radiohead but more honest/vulnerable? I don´t know, something like that.
Constantines-Canadian group with a classic sound. Singer sounds almost... like.. Bruce Springstein or something. Very good rock. Just saw ´em live and they put on an amazing show. Highly recommend checking out an MP3 of these guys! Edit: Here´s the MP3 I had in mind- Nighttime Anytime

Other bands I´m listening to but aren´t obscure enough to warrant descriptions-Thrice (their getting rather pretentious though, quoting Emerson in an interview? meh), Thursday, Weakerthans (Canadian country/punk), Atmosphere (new CD is decent), Blood Brothers, Cursive, and more, could go on for a while.

PK,

If you like Jazz/Blues try to take a look at the PBS Mortin Scorcese film about the Blues. I´m not much into watching it the but the CD is pretty good and they are about to come out with a box set.

MP3 -- (Warning: Lars turn away, I don´t want a lawsuit). Some Stevie Wonder, a rather eccletic mix of stuff.

CD: Creedence Clear Water is in the turntable right now.

Radio: I´m convince now that US radio are just pimps for the music industry. If to any station it´s not like what they had before DJ´s had to choose what they listened to. Now all the playlist are predetermined and canned. With that said, if you want a commercial free best of the popular music, the bbc.co.uk is pretty good. Plus you can´t beat an Enlish accent rather than a whiney, Howard Stern funny man impressionist that you get in so many stations.

Oh but I do listen to in the mornings the Bob and Tom radio show. Those guys just make me laugh and they do it without the shock factor.

I´m trying to listen to the classics more as PK has said to expose myself to a great variety. More Blues and Bluegrass. Golden Oldies Country not this new rock and roll with a cowboy hat. A lot of Rat Pack type music. Sinatra, Columbia year´s is a pretty good listen. Most of his middle career stuff is the best.

I spend most of my time trying to find music to play for my elementary PE students.

I´ve had the most luck with Euro Pop, Japanese Candy Pop and Latin Salsa.

This month, I be mainly listening to...

Kraftwerk - Tour de France soundtracks

David Bowie - Lodger

Frank Zappa - Broadway the Hard Way

Mum - Finally We Are No One

Tom Waits - Alice

Classics all ! (pimp, pimp).

And PK - Talksport radio ?
Jeesus, that´s regarded as a complete joke over here. My football mascot teddy bear (in sky blue and white, natch) knows more about soccer than the buffoons on that channel. I only ever hear it at the barber´s that I use..and I´m glad I´m down to a 5 minute ´number 1 all over, mate´, so I have to suffer it for a shorter period of time.

A particular bete noire is that fat drunken bankrupt, Alan Brazil. His bias towards his old team, Ipswich, is breathtaking. We played them in the Cup about 3 years ago, when they were 3rd in the EPL and we were back in Div 1. He assured his listeners that MCFC were no longer a big club, and would be well turned over at Portman Rd.

Cue 5,000 blues travelling to Ipswich (say 5 hours each way) on a Sunday night, a 4-1 shellacking for them, and a mass chant of

"Brazil, where´s your money gone ?" as his pub business had just been liquidated.

PS - has news of the Premiership footballers gang rape trial reached the US yet ? There are sports websites over here that have been shut down for naming the alleged villains, or even the club reputedly involved.

Not that I´m asking you for any particular reason, PK

Well, for a relative newcomer to the wonderful world of footie (last five years), I enjoy Talksport.

What are more intelligent alternatives that stream worldwide?

I don´t hear Brazil and Parry. They´re on mornings, which is the middle of the night here. James Whale is a blithering idiot, though.

I´ve read about the rape trial on UK sites, but the American media couldn´t give a hoot. No reporting of it over here.

Who are the players? Spill, spill!

Take care,

Sports talk radio while driving my kids to Montessori school in the morning.

Anthrax, Metallica, Avril Lavigne, Foo Fighters and Incubus on MP3 player or CDs in the car.

(Note: every single one of my MP3s are from CDs I own, so ***** off Lars.)

Alternatives to Talksport are difficult to recommend. Five Live (903 AM) is good, but obviously covers other stuff.

As for the trial, I wouldn´t want to go into detail. Blueview, which is one of the MCFC websites/message boards I frequent, has been shut down and purged 3 times this week, as solicitors representing those accused have threatened libel actions.

Even TV/radio companies have been warned that accidentally transmitting fan chants can be construed as libellous.

Lets just say that tomorrow´s News of the World may be interesting.

Overall has echoes of the Kobe Bryant trial, except that there are multiple perpetrators (allegedly).

Lets just say that there are 7 barcodes in the frame, and it is those who would probably come to mind.

Carry on with the music, everyone !

Korn, the new Iron Maiden, and Brroks & Dunn.

Quite a mixture there

Oh, and I´ll jump on the the FU Lars wagon. Your most recent album sounds like crap on a stick, whatevfer that would sound like.

Oh, forgot to add Del Amitri. PK (and anyone else): if you like quality music, you must check these guys out. Just please DO NOT judge them by Roll To Me. Thta was a weak song made for radio play.
Seven barcodes? Newcastle players? Oh no ...

Let me guess who the seven Newcastle subjects would be:

Bellamy ... check.
Woodgate ... check.
Bowyer ... check.
Jenas ... check.
Dyer ... check.

Hmm ... I´m stumped on the other two. Hopefully it´s not Newcastle boys, but nothing would surprise me, I guess.

Out,

Just did a few searches of Internet forums to fill in some of the blanks.

If they´re guilty, the whole lot should be put away for a long time. Now I´m starting to think maybe there´s more to Newcastle´s horrid start than just on-the-pitch problems.

Out,
White Stripes "Elephant" (yeah, still)
Danilo Perez
Bill Frisell "The Intercontinentals"
Last Emperor

Guided by Voices "Earthquake Glue". Took a while but it´s really grown on me.

Jane´s Addiction "Strays." A bit too nu-metalish, but still a pretty rockin´ disc with good guitar and drumwork. A good CD for the car and gym.

Alkaline Trio "Good Mourning". Another solid punk/pop release from these Chicago boys, featuring some guest shouting from Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks. Nice!

This morning I keep playing the soundtrack from last night over and over in my head:

Track 1: "Here we go Steelers, here we go!" by the Steeler fans

Track 2: The ESPN crew singing the praises of Heinz Ward and the vaunted Steeler linebackers

Track 3: "BOOOOO!" by the Steeler fans

Track 4 (my personal favorite): "Total Silence" by the empty yellow seats in the 4th quarter

I will soon be adding Ill Nino, Sevendust, and Mushroomhead to my Archos.

SPeaking of, the create a playlist feature on the latest Rockbox software is great!! I´ve got everything broken down into folders by genre, like Country, Nu Metal, Progressive Metal, Thrash, etc... and I can shuffle the entire folder. It´s like having my own personalized radio stations

I´m really digging Audioslave´s "Show Me How To Live," too. It reminds me of the golden age of grunge in the early 90s, heavy and sludgy. And Chris Cornell´s voice remains as amazing as ever.
