The Mike Vick Show

Post by BBReBozo »

Last night´s Carolina/Atlanta game was pretty entertaining but I was absolutely disgusted with the commentary by Thiesman & Co. Normally I think this crew is the best in the business, but last night´s incessant hyping of Mike Vick really had me boiling. Sure it was great that he was back and he had a couple spectacular runs but his play nowhere near warranted the kind of constant fauning he received last night. Hell Paul Maguire at one point said that Mike Vick´s play was the cause of Atlanta´s DEFENSE playing well. That´s just silly. Another time, during Vick´s 40-yard scramble, Maguire confidently, smugly said "He´s gone. Gone." only to have him tackled before getting into the end zone.
<BR>
<BR>One last point. I counted, and during the last two minutes of the game (not OT, but regular play) they mentioned "Michael Vick", "Mike" or "Vick" THIRTY TWO TIMES.
but really, this is 2004, and nearly everything is considered to be gay now

I agree Bozo. Vick´s an amazing athlete, but he´s going to need to complete more than 52% of his passes to be an amazing QB. He could become that QB, but he´s still got a long way to go in terms of his reads and accuracy. I do think it was an inspiration to the Falcons to see him back at the helm, but it´s a stretch to say any defense plays better because of a QB´s performance, even a guy like Favre.

Honestly, if you were a wide receiver, who would you rather have as your quarterback, Peyton Manning or Michael Vick?
<BR>
<BR>Manning, in a heartbeat.
<BR>
<BR>First, you know that the ball will be delivered where it´s supposed to during your route. There won´t be a ton of freelancing behind the line of scrimmage by your QB scrambling every time he sees a glimpse of daylight or feels some pressure.
<BR>
<BR>Second, when the play is changed, it will happen with an audible at the line, not because your QB decided to scramble to find more room to maneuver.
<BR>
<BR>Vick has a ways to go, a ways to go. He´s the biggest product of hype in the NFL today, by far. McNair and McNabb are more complete QBs than Vick. And Manning is the NFL MVP right now. He outplayed McNair yesterday.
<BR>

I question building an offense around a guy like Vick. *THIS* season´s down the drain because he´s on the DL? Ha! After watching him last night I say Atlanta better get used to him spending some serious time on the DL throughout his career. He took as much punishment as a running back last night. You can´t expect an NFL QB to take that kind of punishment every week, no matter how many highlight reels he makes. What´s the average NFL running back´s career these days, 4 years? Atlanta better invest in a quality second-string QB.

All I gotta say is...
<BR>
<BR>Ball on the 30 yd. line...less than 30 seconds to go...Interception. Nice throw Mike.
<BR>
<BR>Nice call by the O. Coordinator as well...kick the f´n field goal and win the game already. They were LUCKY.

Anyone catch the play between Indy and Tenn where Manning was in the process of being sack and he backhanded a pass intentionally into the ground....resulting in a penalty? All I gotta say about Manning on that particular play is that .....that might have been the biggest P***Y play I´ve ever seen a QB make on a pass rush. Not to mention the player rushing wasn´t a big linebacker or anyone like that. Take the sack you clown!

I´ll take Manning´s 66% completion percentage to go along with his "p---y" play. Favre was about to get nailed yesterday and hucked the ball, resulting in an INT TD. I´d hardly question his manliness.
<BR>
<BR>Manning still has to prove himself in the offseason. But after seeing the Chefs play the role of the Washington Generals to Clinton Portis´s Meadowlark Lemon, I think Indy´s the best team in the NFL right now.

Dan:
<BR>
<BR>That wasn´t Manning being a p*ssy -- it was Manning being the smartest player on the field, as usual.
<BR>
<BR>He knew that there was a chance the ref wouldn´t call it grounding and that he could avoid the loss of yardage due to the sack. Very few QBs in the league would think like that.
<BR>
<BR>I´m not a huge Manning or Colts´ fan, but I´m really tired of people calling Manning a p*ssy. The guy has made 93 consecutive starts for the Colts and missed one snap -- ONE DAMN SNAP -- during that span because of a broken jaw. A broken jaw, not turf toe or a sore pinky.
<BR>
<BR>So, please, Peyton Manning is as tough as they come. You don´t make 93 straight starts at QB in the NFL by being a weasel.
<BR>
<BR>Take care,

What kind of name is Peyton anyway? He must be some kind of p*ssy or something with such a p*ssy name like that. <IMG SRC="images/forum/icons/icon_wink.gif">

I completely agree with you BB. I tell you, life was good while Vick was on the injured list...ESPN, FOX, and CBS all discovered that there were other players in the league besides Vick. So far it´s been a great season for the NFL without Vick.
<BR>
<BR>Now that he´s back, get used to this constant hyping of an overhyped player.
<BR>
<BR>I almost laughed out loud when the ESPN guy said that Vick made the defense better, but I actually heard one better than that. During the late night Sportscenter, one of the guys actually pondered the thought of Vick being named league MVP with only 4 starts all year.
<BR>I think if something like that happened, I would swear off the NFL forever.
<BR>
<BR>Just a little inside the numbers on Vick...he was 16 of 33 for 179 yards, 0 TD and 1 INT. He carried the ball 14 times for 141 yards, only three carries less than T.J. Duckett, their featured back. After 1.5 games, Vick has a QB rating of 60.7, worst in the league among starting qbs. Now I know that the other qbs have all had a full season, so Vick will have some time to bring his rating up.
<BR>
<BR>I guess what really surprises me is that his selfishness has already cost the Falcons the season and him on the injured list for 13 weeks, but he seems to think that he can run like a running back and not get hurt. What´s going to happen is someone´s going to light his ass up again and he´s going to get hurt seriously. Apparently, while he was on the bench for 13 weeks, no one mentioned anything to him about sliding, or throwing the ball away. The biggest knock on Vick when he was in college and it´s still a problem today is he does not give the called play enough of a chance before he takes off running.
<BR>
<BR>A guy just coming off the injured list SHOULD NOT be running the ball 14 times whether he´s getting yards or not. That´s 14 more chances that he´s got to get another broken leg or a concussion.
<BR>
<BR>I certainly don´t wish injury on no one, but at what point is Vick going to stop acting like a running back and be a frigging quarterback?
<BR>
<BR>Until he does, expect a heavy dose of asskissing from the media.

<BR>
<BR>I´m no NFL / Vick expert, and don´t really know the history... but isn´t running so much exactly what got Vick into the NFL in the first place? If he was a stay-at-home guy, are his in-the-pocket, read progression, throw ball... skills good enough?

Well, during the pre-game for the falcons game, my little sweetheart Suzie Kolber made a point to mention that, during his downtime, Vick has had plenty of time to really bury his head in the playbook and that he had improved the mental aspect of his game. Whether this will turn out to be true or not, I have no idea -- last night´s game really only amounted to Vick´s fourth game of the season.
<BR>
<BR>BTW, I do not resent Dan Reeves and his staff going for the TD at the end of the game (which resulted in the Vick INT). Their kicker is terrible (hitting just above 60% of his kicks) and he had already missed two last night. At 2-10 on the season, you may as well go for the win and get some buzz going.

River,
<BR>
<BR>I agree the Pats are tough, but I think Indy is a better team despite losing to the Pats. Better running game, better QB, the best receiver in the NFL. Not that NE is a slouch, their defense especially is brutal. But I think the Colts/Dungy/Manning have shown a toughness they have lacked in previous years, especially yesterday, the near comeback against a tough NE team, and the huge victory over Tampa.
<BR>
<BR>Philly´s streak is certainly impressive, but I think the NFC is the NBA Eastern Conference this year. I think the Eagles just have too many holes and have gotten away with an easy schedule.

Mike Vick´s big knock in college was his arm. Powerful? Hell yes. Accurate? Not so much.
<BR>
<BR>And it was evident last night -- I saw a few good throws -- but everything else was too high, too low, or just too damn hard.
<BR>
<BR>The constant apologetic whinnies of Joe Theisman, claiming the reverse ball spin from a left-handed QB, was causing the dropsies by Falcon receivers, rang false to me as well. I just think Vick throws the ball too damn hard sometimes.<BR><BR><font size=1>[ This message was edited by: BBReBozo on 08-12-2003 15:26 ]</font>

"BTW, I do not resent Dan Reeves and his staff going for the TD at the end of the game (which resulted in the Vick INT)."
<BR>
<BR>It was a call that I will never blame on Dan. I have been begging for Dan to put the came in the hands of his star for the past year. The Falcons lost a couple of games last year b/c of lousy special teams play. Let Vick learn how to win games. Along the way he will cost the Falcons a few games. But I would rather have the game in the hands of a 70 million dollar QB rathern than a 500k kicker.
<BR>
<BR>BTW: Am I the only Falcons fan here?
<BR>
<BR>I would have to agree about the hype. But the guy is exciting. He can get non-football people or casual fans to watch the game.
<BR>
<BR>I told my girlfriend last night, this is sickening. Vick was everywhere, the song was about Vick ect... and the Panthers were the ones trying to lock up the Division, not the other way around.
<BR>
<BR>That being said, don´t blame Vick. I doubt he ever called ESPN and said "HYPE ME."
<BR>
<BR>As far as him having alot to learn. He sure does. But he is still young. I think he only has 16 NFL starts under his pelt to this point and he has 8 or 9 wins.
<BR>
<BR>His accuracy is in question at times. He underthrew a couple of balls last night(including the int to Crumpler). But he also made some kick ass throws as well.

db stole my thoughts exactley
<BR>
<BR>vick= hype
<BR>
<BR>give me mcnair,manning,mcnabb anyday
<BR>
<BR>but i will admit i was wondering if he could eclipse 200 yds rushing last night when they went too overtime
<BR>
<BR>he will probably eclipse a 1000 next year easily
<BR>
<BR>charisimatic,thrilling,pinball styled ,purely athletic quarterback yes
<BR>
<BR>but this doesnt make him a field general by a long shot
<BR>
<BR>someone needs too go in and re distribute his atribute points a bit more evenly <IMG SRC="images/forum/icons/icon_wink.gif"> <IMG SRC="images/forum/icons/icon_wink.gif">
