I'm excited too.. going to be a fast and furious couple of weeks.Diablo25 wrote:Baseball is my sport of choice to follow...love it. That being said, I am getting pretty excited for the NFL. I'm a huge Eagles fan and huge Fantasy Footaball fan. The sport helps me get thru the fall and earlier winter here in the northeast. I usually don't think about it until about this time of year. The next two weeks are going to be fast moving and exciting. Bring it on!

The Cubs season is making the NFL lockout even more painful for me. Hopefully everything gets finalized this week.

Pete Prisco says the players got the better of the deal.
http://www.cbssports.com/#!/mcc/blogs/e ... 7/30788649
"The players scored a TKO.
With the exception of opening up the books, which was never going to happen, this deal would include almost everything the players wanted to get.
Smith, for all the criticism he has taken for being as defiant as he's come off, deserves plenty of praise for getting his players this deal.
The owners will spin it their way, but the issues all went the way of the players.
Just look at them:
----The players wanted half the revenue without anything coming off the top while the owners wanted $2 billion off the top, and then would give up half. The owners will take nothing off the top and the players would get 48-percent of all revenues.
Advantage: Players
---The players wanted more time off. They would get a lot more. There will be off-season workout limits. They will limit OTAs. They will get more days off.
---Advantage: Players.
---The players wanted teams to spend close to the cap, and they now would have to do so, spending cash to the cap floor. They wanted free agency after four years, while the owners didn't. Free agency would be after four years.
---Advantage: Players.
---The players would get an enhanced injury protection benefit of up to $1 million of a player’s salary for the contract year after his injury and up to $500,000 in the second year after his injury.
---Advantage: Players.
The owners wanted the rookie wage scale, and that would be in play. But they also wanted rookie deals for drafted players to be six years, not four. They would be four with an option for a fifth for some rookies.
----Advantage: Even.
So what exactly did the owners get? A new CBA. They didn't like the last one, so getting a new one is a win of sorts. They also get labor peace in a league that is the unquestioned sports leader for 10 years.
The NFL is an estimated $9-billion-a-year business. But projections are that it can become a $20-billion-a-year business. If that isn't reason to get labor peace, I don't know what could be the reason.
"Yeah, when you look at all the stuff, this is a good deal for us," one player told me. "There are just a few things that have to be tweaked."
Here's a guess that tweaking gets done over the weekend. And this deal will get done.
When it does, Smith should put on the championship belt. He knocked the snot out of the owners with a nasty right hook to the head.
This judge has a decision if this is the deal: Victory, players."

I think the last line is telling from that story...
Had there not been a season could that have opened the door for another sport to catch up to football. Like the way the baseball strike hurt baseball and I say it's never really recovered.

Agreed, nothing is forever even the NFL and while Soccer is nowhere need a threat to the NFL, i'm sure the higher ups keep hearing soccer moms echoing. Every Sport tries to capitalize on another's misfortune.JRod wrote:I think the last line is telling from that story...

Nascar became the top racing sport when infighting took hold in American open wheel racing. Baseball lost out to Football but I can't blame the Baseball strike on that. Football was already very popular in the mid to late 90's.

Sports radio promo + my internal dialogue:
Radio: The NFL lockout is over!
Me: Sweet! Huzzah etc...
Radio: Now it's time for Jerry Angelo and the Bears to get to work in the free agent market...
Me: (Price Is Right Loser sound) Well that euphoria didn't last long.

hope the Jets sign Holmes and Edwards. If it is all they do
am big on retaining skillful receivers. As i believe drafting the position of WR, is a black hole. In particular, when selecting in rounds 1-3. (Not to mention the needed 2-3 NFL years development time per WR)
btw Cromartie can take himself and his grade school, to another team for all i care

It sucks for the Bills to lose Pos at linebacker, but he'll never play that entire six-year contract for the Jaguars without a significant injury and multiple games on the injured reserve. The guy is a fine player, but he's more brittle than toffee.

As for the Dolphins and Reggie Bush. I couldn't be more meh about it. Who cares really? Lot of money for a wildcard.
Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
I just read the Dolphins acquired Reggie Bush (2 yr $10 million) from the Saints. Any details as to what the Fins give up in return?

to me his value would be better maximized on a team which plays on artificial surface. While New Orleans does, i remember in his rookie season, commentators explained how the turf would play 'slow' for a while because the field turf was a different type and/or still new.

I like him better on grass. Less chance to get injured IMO.vinny-b wrote:to me his value would be better maximized on a team which plays on artificial surface. Holy "simultaneous post" Batman.
Not a bad deal then for the Dolphins. Agreed on the playing surfaces, grass is easier on the knees and ankles.

Love the fact that my Eagles got a 2012 2nd rounder along with Rodgers-Cromartie.
