Sort of. It's all based in the Warhammer universe of monsters and characters. Think of it like a satire of D&D mixed with football. The whole story is completely wacky and ridiculous with a good mix of slapstick humor mixed in for good measure. Check out the links bd posted above to teh wikipedia article if you want a full background. I'm a huge fan of the game myself from when I was a kid growing up in the UK.Zlax45 wrote:Is this sort of Mutant League football?

The previous Mutant League games by this developer (name?) were very good (AI-wise). Now that they've received the GW endorsement and are able to create an official Blood Bowl game I'd speculate that this one will be better still. The previous games were basically an attempt to try and get the blood bowl license by showing what they could do.GameSeven wrote: Hopefully the AI is good as the game can live or die on the strategy involved.
The community behind this game is die-hard and the forums on the developers website are filled with people who've been playing the alpha/beta. I've only been reading good things from those guys so far. The turn-based option is supposed to be 100% true to the latest ruleset and even if the real-time is terrible I'd buy this gaem just for that. Hopefully we'll see some in depth online league options becuase that is wha the community is pining for.
Preview with a bunch of screens

Out on the field, there are two different game modes, Classic and Blitz. Classic is the traditional, turn-based version of Blood Bowl, with all the strategy and dice rolls intact. Blitz is the real-time version of things, so even though the dice rolls may still be happening, you'll never see them as you run, pass and block your way to what will hopefully be victory. Both modes can be played in online or offline multiplayer, and those who are looking for a real challenge can sign up for tournaments and leagues and take on the best players from around the world.

I tried Chaos League football and hated it, because I couldn't work out what was going on....now turn-based ? That sounds more like my speed
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."

It's based fully on the Living Rulebook Version 5.0 for Blood Bowl. You actually find the rulebook online for free if you want to read about how to play before the game is released.davet010 wrote:I tried Chaos League football and hated it, because I couldn't work out what was going on....now turn-based ? The developers keep commenting on how "true" they have been to that rulebook in teh turn-based gameplay. If that is true then this game is going to be awesome:)

If you guys are really interested in BB:
--I'm going to be running more than one league -- one PC and one on the 360. If you're interested, when the game drops email me. (wabner@gameshark.com) Both leagues will be turn based, just like the boardgame. None of that real time stuff.
--I did two lengthy Q&A's with the CEO of Cyanide which should hopefully answer more of your questions. He goes into a fair amount of detail.
Part I:

Part II: (BB Community Questions)

I've been an avid BB player for a long, long time and if the subject matter holds any interest to you and if the game is as good as I think it'll be you really should check it out. It's a great, great game.

That preview doesn't do the game justice.
<i>"Factor in a swathe of stats and some complicated, immutable rules and there's this absolute artificiality to proceedings. A natural side effect of the game's origins perhaps, but it does mean there's a risk it'll feel to inaccessible, confusing and cold to those who want immediate orc-bashing thrills."</i>
Blood Bowl is complicated? Blood Bowl is complicated like Panzer General was complicated. Or Incubation. Or Heroes of Might and Magic. Or really any other lite turn based strategy game. Which is what BB is-- a lite turn based strategy game with a sports game coating.
It's a preview that tries to find something negative to talk about because that's what the preconceived notion of a preview is. I'm playing the beta and there are things that need tweaked, fixed, etc because it's a beta and still 2+ months out, but the 'swathe of stats' isn't one of them.
By swathe of stats he means: yards rushing, passing, injuries caused, deaths caused, passes completed, touchdowns, interceptions, and game MVP honors. Is that too much data to handle?
All players are rated in Movement allowance (number of hexes he can move), Strength (number of block dice rolled when attacking), Agility (used for passing, dodging, picking up the ball, etc.) , and Armor Value. (Roll 2D6 when you fall and if you roll over your AV -- you're hurt in some way) That's it.
Then there are numerous skills that add rerolls, dice roll modifiers, and so on to those core stats. It's a pretty simple game, really , and far less complicated than turn based games like Civ IV.
If you want to play Blood Bowl (and you should-- it's fantastically awesome) and find the game too inaccessible I dunno what to tell you. Madden, FIFA and NBA 2K are all more complicated games-- and by a fairly large margin.
I taught a total newbie the rules when we played a game a few nights ago in the PC beta. We spoke via Skype and he grasped the core rules in about 10 minutes. A few questions popped up but after the first few turns (and games are broken down into two 8-turn halves) we played without any issues at all.
What this preview really fails to touch upon is team management/league play/career mode -- which is one of the absolute strengths of this game.
Players earn SPP (Star Player Points) for doing things like completing passes, scoring TDs, injuring players, etc. which can then be spent to obtain a wide variety of skills from STR based skills like Mighty Blow (which makes it a little easier to injure opposing players) to Passing skills like Accuracy which grants you a simple +1 die roll modifier to all pass attempts. There's a lot of skills in the game which really give a player an identity.
Decking a Troll out with Multiple Block, Dirty Player, and Frenzy is a real treat.
You will grow attached to your star players in Blood Bowl because they can die. It's devastating to have a player who is decked out with a lot of skills -- and Star Players can turn into dominators on the pitch -- die right in front of your eyes. Death actually isn't too common but it's certainly a possibility. There's always that thought in the back of your head when your best player gets smashed by a player with Mighty Blow.
The long term play value of Blood Bowl is incredibly high.
Toss in stuff like Team Fan Factor (how loyal your fans are), Cheerleaders, which provide moral support, the Apothecary -- which may keep your players alive, and all sorts of extra stuff like Ref Bribing and secret weapons like the Dwarf Deathroller or the Goblin Pogo Stick and you have a game that is loaded with personality, flavor, and strategic mayhem.
If you have any interest whatsoever in turn based strategy games and think the idea if blending fantasy races with Rugby sounds interesting -- when it drops for the PC in June -- buy it.
I still have 7 spots open for our 24 team PC league. Email me if you want in. It's sure to be a blast.

Thanks but those comments are from the board game.macsomjrr wrote:Awesome overview Bill, thanks for the impressions from the beta (keep 'em coming!). Not to sound too cliche but once this game drops I have a feeling its going to be big.
Commenting on the PC beta would be wrong.

Totally. If you watch the Games Day 2009 video (Paris) on their website and hear some of the comments from the players of the actual board game it sounds like Cyanide/Focus have done an outstanding job. June can't come soon enough.GameSeven wrote:The more I see, the better this looks. It's apparent that the developers have an appreciation of the GW style. It looks like recreating the BB environment is a true labor of love for this team.
