OT: New Music?

Post by Badger_Fan »

I went back a couple pages and didn't see a thread, so I thought I'd start one. Anything new that you guys are listening too?

I really like the new Rhett Miller solo disc. It's not a surprise as I'm a huge 97's fan, but he just puts out fantastic pop that is sublime.

The Little Willies disc is outstanding. It's a Norah Jones side project that has a shufflin' blues/country vibe. Here voice is divine and the disc is a lot of fun.

The Jenny Lewis solo disc (she's the lead singer of Rilo Kiley) is pretty good and it has a great cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care" that is outstanding.

I heard a bit of James Hunter's latest. He's a Brit (I think he's British) that has an amazing knack for Sam Cooke/Jackie Wilson/really old James Brown that is really fun to listen to. Anyone who likes old style R&B or Soul should check him out.

Other than that I'm really looking forward to the new Shins disc and I have to say that the new Pearl Jam single is really good.

Anyone else?
The sing-along songs'll be our scriptures.

I bought Prince's "3121" last week and while I was there I picked up New Order's last album, which I really really like.

I've heard two new Pearl Jam songs. I like them, but I really wish someone would tell Pearl Jam that good rock n' roll bands don't have to always limit the songs to 3:20.

Love both of the new Pearl Jam songs, but I'm a big fan so that's no surprise. I've got the new Rhett Miller disc but haven't had a chance to listen to much of it yet. Great to hear that it sounds good...love the Old 97s and Miller's first solo cd.

I've heard most of Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime II, and so far I love it. It's still not back to the quality of RFO, OM, Empire, or PL, but it's the best they've done since 1994.

For those who remember (and enjoy) Sabastian Bach, he sang on an album by a band called Frameshift. It's more like 1 guy's project with a couple other musicians. It's ahrd rock, with a tinge of industrial (just a tinge, though). The concept of the album is 2 sides of various crimes. For example 2 tracks on a school shooting, 1 track from the students & t4eachers point of view, 1 track from the shooters point of view. Pretty interesting, and it's a fresh idea for an album.

Good calls on Little Willies and Jenny Lewis. Both are really good.

But if you like the Jenny Lewis album, then you MUST get the new Neko Case album. It's exceptional -- neck and neck with Rosanne Cash's latest as the best record I've heard so far this year. I'm listening to it a ton. Neko Case has talent to spare.

Among other female singer-songwriters, I really like Beth Orton's new album.

I'm a longtime Steely Dan fan, so of course I got my mitts on Donald Fagen's new solo album. Not much different from his past solo work or Steely Dan's later work, but a good listen nonetheless.

I'm going to "obtain" Kris Kristofferson's new album, as I'm hearing really, really good things about it. Same with Willie Nelson's new album, which is a return to his roots after the last reggae album experiment.

Good thread, as always!

Take care,
PK

Neko Case. B. Orton. Pardon my ignorance but what kind of genre music would you classify it as? Haven't heard those names.

Not much lately but I have been listening to the new Cannibal Corpse that just came out. It's called Kill.

I've also revisited Marilyn Manson's "The Golden Age of Grotesque" and At the Drive In's "Relationship of Command".

Lately I have become a big fan of The New Pornographers. Their Twin Cinema album has been on repeat a lot. Just tremendous power pop with great hooks, heavy drumming, and spine-tingling male/female harmonies.

I bought the Artic Monkeys CD. Not a great album, but "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor" is worth a download. A good, fast, snotty single.

Cat Power's "The Greatest" is a nice, quiet record. If you like stuff like Iron and Wine it's worth getting.

The Futureheads did a punky/pop cover of Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" that I have been listening to a lot at the gym. They do vocal bits for some of the tom-tom rhythms of the original, which is kind of cool.

I am also probably the oldest man in America who owns The Killers Hot Fuss. I like it, it's a good disc for the car. I don't know how these kids can ape the 80s so well :D

Ah, speaking of revisited music, I've been listening to Guns 'N Roses "Use Your Illusion II" a lot lately, especially late night when I've been working on the Indy 500 Media Guide.

What a great album by the most exciting rock-and-roll band of the late 80s and early 90s, in my opinion. How great G 'N R was; how much greater they could have been.

Strange how Slash rarely is mentioned among the best ax men ever in rock. Holy sh*t, that guy had licks, riffs and chops. Izzy and Slash laid down the most sludgy, cool guitar tracks in mainstream rock since Keith Richards and Brian Jones/Ronnie Wood.

Take care,
PK

I usually end up getting upset at some point while listening to G'n'R. We could have had at least another 5 albums out of them by now, but instead Axl had to go completely crazy (that's my word for the day now:)) and they disintegrated. Slash is great and all, but without Axl his material just seems to be missing something.

I'm am curious to hear the leaked tracks from the new album (that may never actually come out). Still, no Slash or Duff, so I'm not overly optimistic.

I take the opposite tack, Matt. I think disintegration of the band was inevitable due to the personality conflicts and the rise of grunge, so I just appreciate the killer work G 'N R did at their zenith.

It still rocks harder than most stuff today and is more dangerous than a lot of mainstream rock released today. The neo-punkers populating the pop charts today are absolute p*ssies compared to Axl, Slash, Izzy and the boys. :)

I didn't want to create a separate thread, but I'm interested in adding new music to my mp3 player. However, here's my dilema. I generally only like a few songs from a band or singer. Thus, I have a lot of singles on my Ipod.

So, as an idea of keeping this thread alive, can some of you suggest your favorite singles from bands you enjoy listening to?

I should preface by saying I don't necessarily have a favorite genre, but have never really gotten in to rap or heavy metal. Other than that, I'll listen to anything.

Thanks.

Good call on The New Pornographers Brando. Great band.

My newset favorite is both albums from Kings of Leon. HOLY SH*T! For some reason these guys really grabbed me. Especially the newest album Aha Shake Heartbreak. Fantastic stuff. Similar genre as bands like The Strokes, The Vines, Jet, ect... But for some reason I feel like Kings of Leon just took it to another level. Not sure exactly what it is that really sets them apart from other similar bands for me, but I am just so impressed with their style and songwriting.

I've been dabbling in some Guided By Voices lately but I really don't 'get' their 'lo-fi' stuff.

I also just picked up the newest album from Archer Prewitt from The Sea & Cake fame. His solo stuff is really nice. Similar mellow vibe but with some fresh twists.

I'll pick up the new Pearl Jam and Tool albums when they come out in May for sure.

The first song of Kings of Leon's second album is one of the better rock songs I've heard in years. I hear they'll be opening on the second leg of Pearl Jam's upcoming tour (My Morning Jacket is opening on the first leg). Can't wait to get to a show with both PJ and the Kings playing on the same bill.

Yeah, I LOVE those first 2 songs on that album. They just kick so much ass. Great vocals. So fitting.

That sucks that I will miss them opening for Pearl Jam as I am seeing them on the first leg in Chicago. However, you just mentioned the other band that I recently became interested in, My Morning Jacket. I have their last two albums and then an older one and I like them a lot. I like the newest two the best. I am excitied to see them open for PJ, but realy bummed I am not going to be seeing Kings of Leon.

I picked up David Gilmour's latest and am enjoying. Nothing to ground breaking but a nice listen.

Also picked up James Brunt for my wife and we both are liking it.

I also like The Killers. Kind of like a good action movie, don't have to think about it to enjoy it.

Hmmm, ok. I hate rap so I couldn't help you there anyways. Metal is my music of choice, but I do get into other stuff.

Of the non-metal, here are some of my favorites:

Country:
Dirks Bently - What Was I Thinking?
Dixie Chicks - Godspeed
Tim McGraw - Back When
Toby Keith - My List
Jimmy Buffet / martina McBride - Trip Around the Sun

Rock:
Del Amitri - I'd suggest anything from them, but Roll To Me is their big hit

Classic rock:
Peter Gabriel: In You Eyes, Red Rain, Salsbury Hill(sp?)
Genesis - Mama, Turn It On Again, Abacab, pretty much anything from 1980-1990
Kansas - Dust In the Wind, Carry On Wayward Son
Triumph - Time Goes By, Fight the Good Fight

Not sure what kind of single you're looking for. Are you looking for top 40 stuff, older rock, or...????

I saw the Kings of Leon when they opened for U2 and I was unimpressed. Maybe it was the acoustics at the Wachovia Center, but it just sounded very distorted and loud. Every song sounded about the same. I know it's tough to open for an act like U2, but almost everyone I talked to agreed that they sounded like sh*t. Most people besides those fighting for space on the floor went to the concourse during their set. I do like their second album though.

Twin Cinema is one of my favorite albums of the past few years. Good call. I bought it on sale at Best Buy a couple months ago for $7.99.

I think I like the same music as Brando because I own the Killers too.

Prince 3121 is a strong record but mediocre by his own standards. There are a half dozen nice tunes though.

Still listening a lot to Lyrics Born's "Shame S*#$ Different Day" and the new Neko Case.

Actually, the best music I've heard this year is all the stuff in Chapelle's block party. That was musical nirvana, and I can't wait for the DVD which will presumably have at least some of the songs in their entirety.

Matt,

I guess to be more practical about this, I should be more clear in terms of what I'm looking for. I'm most interested in music from the 80s through today (whether that be Top 40, rock, alternative, country, etc.) I'm also intrigued by several of today's bands many of the guys from DSP have mentioned that I'm unfamilar with. I've always just followed music I've heard on the radio.

As an example, there's a song by the Why Store that I just happened upon a few years ago (Lack of Water) that I really like, but I'm not overly enthusiastic about listening to their entire cd.

By the way, thank you for listing some of your favorite tunes. Looking forward to sampling them this evening.

Dan, I would definitely check out a few Del Amitri tracks. They are rock, but not heavy by any means. Almost more folk or country than rock.

Aside from Roll To Me, which I think is one of their lesser songs, I'd check out the following for a good sampling of what Del Amitri is like:

Driving With the Brakes On
Just Like A Man
Long Way Down

Aside from Canibal Corpse and U2, most of the names flying around this thread I've never heard

So as long as we're on the subjet, can anyone reccomend bands like Del Amitri? I could use some more of this type of laid back rock with great lyrics.

Dan:

I think you're doing yourself a disservice by just listening to singles. What strikes you as a great song on a really good album might strike me as a decent song on a really good album.

Then there are bands that dabble in a bunch of musical styles within one album, so one single might not sound anything like another.

Buying a bunch of different albums might not be practical or affordable, but if you "obtain" music as I do, then just grab the album and give it a good listen. You'll get a much better feel for that artist than just a single.

And remember, allmusic.com is your best friend when learning more about new bands and their discographies.

Just my 26 cents ...

Take care,
PK
