The fact that they did it without some key players adds more weight to their accomplishment. Whether it was a set play or via corners, that Barca D was asleep at the wheel.
A perfectly executed game.

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19
I need to reach back to 2005 in Istanbul or 1999 at the Nou Camp to recall when my mind was blown this much by a Champions League game.
WOW.
WOW.

Beautiful game thread.
Beautiful it was.
Keep in mind I have been celebrating the last few hours...
I did not believe it possible but God damn it is. It was ! Its done!
NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT !
unreal
Unreal!
Have you , aside from pompous ass Barcelona fans who thought they should have won the first leg by 5 goals in a game they were out easily out played in, seen a more justified ending to a home and home?
NO you havent!
The FAR more deserving side moves on.
Beautiful!
BEAUTIFUL!
Always good to see justice served in sports at least.

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19
Stepping out from my joyful delirium for a moment, I've been amazed at one thing that distinguishes this trophy from championships and tournaments won by other teams I've loved. I've never seen fans repeatedly and emotionally talking about how happy they are for the coach. The way people feel about Klopp goes way beyond the usual gratitude for a winning coach. It's pretty crazy. I must've told my wife 5x on Saturday that I want them to win it more for Klopp than for any single player.
What a f***in team!
What a f***in team!

USWNT 13-0 vs Thailand, that was brutal. It just the men's team look awful when they get trounced by Venezuela.

They're being criticized for celebrating those last few goals.Rodster wrote:USWNT 13-0 vs Thailand, that was brutal. It just the men's team look awful when they get trounced by Venezuela.

Take a guess. In a World Cup event where you’re one of the favorites to win it all, the game is way over after 45 minutes of play and you continue to over celebrate goal after goal against a much weaker team. Nothing wrong with the scoring, but I have a problem with over the top choreographed and orchestrated celebrations when the game is way out of reach.

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19
I've very much enjoyed the debate that has sprung up around this. All my teams should be surrounded by kerfuffles over nuclear-sized blowouts and too much celebrating.
There are two distinct issues. The first is the scoreline. This was what everyone objected to in the immediate aftermath, before being so thoroughly out-shouted in the public square that they had to move on to issue 2. It's the finals of a worldwide tournament at the highest level of the sport. Everyone involved qualified and goal difference matters. Sweden could, and should, put up a crazy number against Thailand if they can. It's a competition that is judged by goals and results. Goal difference matters. This entire line of argument was a non-starter. Toss in the fact that treating this tournament and your opponents as if this was an AYSO U10 event is insulting to everyone involved.
Issue 2 was the celebrations. This is certainly more a matter of opinion without the hard facts of the scoreline debate. I can see how some people thought it excessive. On the other hand, I personally see a group of women who were thrilled at scoring in the event to which they have aspired for their entire lives. Those goals count on their career records. Their families, their supporters, and (not at all incidentally) their sponsors, want to see them celebrate joyfully. This may be the only, last, or best goal they score in a WC finals. From where I sit, I say they should go nuts. Bringing on the jeers of the world is the price they will pay, but the world needs heels too.

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19
I'm 100 percent in the RobV camp here.
I also found it ironic as hell that the Canadian TSN crew complained about excessive celebrations by the USWNT. A bit of jealousy, perhaps? A bit of selective amnesia? After all, Canada beat Puerto Rico, 21-0, and Martinique, 14-0, in the group stages of the 1998 CONCACAF Women's Championship.
Pot, meet kettle.
Celebrate all you want, ladies. You've earned this. Plus this isn't an AYSO tournament. I would feel the exact same way about celebrations by another country in a blowout.

Re: The Beautiful Game thread, season 2018/19
Again, like Rob points it out in an event where goal differentiation matters. As I pointed above, I have no problem whatsoever with the scoring. Whether you’re ranked number 1 or 34, you mace it to the tournament, you know the rules, the event happens every four years, you’re paid to win, to score, to represent your country.
Americans, Canadians, Europeans, Asians, Africans. I am not picking cherries here, but my issue was distinctly directed at the excessive hoo hoo raa raa. There’s no problem feeling as if the whole weight is lifted off your shoulders on your first goal, second goal etc. I am not against celebrating, but at how you celebrate when you look at a score. Men or women, before someone thinks that this is sexist issue.
One of my favorite commentators in the sport now calling the LA games in Max Bretos tweeted: “I would tone down the celebrations, but that’s just me”.
