For those who are having trouble with broken tackles in ESPN

Post by pk500 »

Boys:

I´m among the legions who are having the CPU breaking tackles in ESPN NFL Football. Well, I read where "charging" the defender by holding the A button (Xbox version) just before tackling really helps cure that problem.

Damn right, it does!

I tried using the "charging" method last night in a game with good success. Linebackers will flatten all but the biggest backs if you charge them before making the hit. My big problem now is forgetting to charge potential tacklers before making the hit.

But "charging" really helps. It doesn´t guarantee the tackle or turn ESPN NFL into NFL Blitz, but the amount of broken tackles by the CPU will decrease if you use this technique.

"Charging" tacklers is one of the many subtle parts of ESPN NFL that is realistic and makes this a great game. After all, tacklers must set and drive to make a clean, hard tackle in the NFL, essentially charging themselves, right?

Take care,
PK

My biggest problem is having enough time to execute the charge. Also, maybe because it´s been so molded in to my brain, but I always seem to dive instead of running directly into the runner with the ball. I guess it´s going to take practice.

Dan:

I´m in the same boat, man.

I´m so used to using the dive button for tackles -- a habit bred back when I started playing NFL 2K1 on the Dreamcast. I need to break that habit and start a new one with charging tacklers.

I´m a recent convert from Madden (thanks mostly to pk´s raving in here), and the charging feature is the most important thing I´ve discovered so far.

I started off with a fantasy draft and netted both Simeon Rice and Andre Carter. When I control one of those ends and charge up before ripping or spinning....oooh weee that´s QB feasting time!

I´m going to post a new thread with my take on things from a former Maddenite´s perspective, but I want to get a few more games in first. The biggest problem is that there´s as much to un-learn as there is to learn

Good point PK ! Man, have to buy that game real soon if I can find the time away from hockey. I rented ESPN football for 3 days and had a lot of fun, mind you...the bastards didnt give me a manual so didnt figure out "charging up the players ". Looks like ESPM will definitely be my football game of choice.

Do us a favour and make those slider settings a sticky ? (ones from Nole? )
Keep the earth clean...it's not Uranus.

Grog:

I´m not sure how to turn a post into a sticky. I´ll have to ask Jared.

But I did post the sliders on the front page of DSP, and they´ll stay in that archive for keeps.

So, are you getting any sleep tonight? ESPN NHL Hockey in stores tomorrow!

I have a friend visiting tomorrow night, and he´s not into gaming. But I may try to slide out during lunch and pick up the game. I´m stoked for it!

Pk,

I feel ya. I have many friends who aren´t into gaming as I am. There are times when we have a couple or two over for dinner and we´re sitting around after dinner talking about nothing....the kids are playing, the wives are talking about clothes or what new things the kids are doing. I just want to stand up and say "Who wants to go upstairs for a quick game of ESPN Football?" Of course, I just sit there smiling and nodding talking about clothes.....and what new things the kids are doing.

I´d like to, but it´s tough for me to say at this point. I have to finish my final NCAA game against Devil Doc, and I´ve got a slightly sick baby at home, too. I´d love to try though.

I haven´t even gone online with it yet, as I´m still unlearning Madden controls. Is the online setup similar to EA´s (lobbies, buddy lists etc.)?

Little off the topic here, but did not want to start another thread.

Last night I played the Packers in Green Bay and chose snow flurries for the weather and a night game. It was freakin´ beautiful!!!! It looked very real.

The only problem was I chose the Raiders as the away team(me) and with the white jerseys it was a little hard to see the players. Cheerleaders had on more clothes(boooo) and you could see the players breath. Can´t say the weather really affected the gameplay though.

Also, when Green Bay scored, they did the Lambeau Leap.

[ This message was edited by: Pete on 11-09-2003 14:05 ]
LOL!!! That is so true, sportdan. I have a sister who hates for me to even suggest a game of football to my bro in law. I don´t think he even owns a pair of pants anymore...cause he sure can´t wear em!

Terry:
Soon, my friend, soon. I saw you on XBL last night, but you were in games.

I finally broke my online cherry with DB last night. He beat me, 1-0, in a double-OT thriller of ESPN NHL. But it was the most lopsided 1-0 game in history -- he kicked my ass.
Like I said over on SR...the real scoring chances were about the same, so the overinflated shot totals on my side were more me just taking shots to take shots. It wasn´t as one sided as you´re making it out to be bro. Thanks for the words though.

A rematch is in order...maybe even a little NFL.
