PVP beta is available for download. We MUST get a private Poker Night going for PVP this weekend before beta expires! :)

You don't need the game to play the open beta. It starts Thursday 9/21 and runs to 9/25.

Yep. It pays to be in the loop...lol. So, I was playing it when I typed in the somewhat cryptic "impressions", but they're doing a little maintenance on the beta now, so here's what I see after about 4 games. It really does have an old school GR feel, which is a very, very good thing. Each of the maps I've played (I think there are four, I've seen two) are culled from the overall Bolivia map. They've, so far, been wooded on the outskirts with a hub consisting of a town, or a lumber mill, that sort of thing. In the hub, you have your ammo caches, and a recon tower, that goes live every so often. When it does, you can attempt to activate it. If you are able (you are exposed, and it takes several seconds to activate, making overwatch by teammates essential), you get about 10 seconds of knowing exactly where the enemies are. Of course, you can find them with the drones as well, but they've nerfed the drone battery and range, so that you don't have a lot of time to fly, and the cooldown has been increased to keep people from overusing it. You have a day/night cycle (haven't seen weather yet), which really changes the approach. Watching it darken and having to go to night vision was really intense. You don't 'die', unless the whole team is wiped out. Rather, you stay 'injured' on the map, and that lends itself to a great deal of 'risk/reward' as you attempt to revive fallen teammates. You can't simply run up and try to revive, because someone may be watching, waiting to take you out with him. BUT I had a match where we had our whole team, and the enemy was down to it's last man. He was a crafty one, took out a guy, revived another, and by the end of the match, it was completely reversed, with me being the only one left. I tried to revive, but they had wisely set up to watch all of them. I COULD have been successful, but only by hunting them first. It's a really great chess match because of it.
The only real negative I have at the moment is that, at least in the public matches, there's a time limit. I'm betting that it can be turned off, though, for private matches, or if you set one up yourself. I hope so. You start with three choices of main weapon-assault rifle, semi auto sniper rifle, and PDW. You have a pistol, grenades, and a drone. It looks like you gain some "perks" as you level up, but don't let that make you think of COD. We took out a group of guys at level 8 and 10 who had access to mortar strikes and the like. It's not nearly the advantage that you'd get from CoD perks.

I love it so far. Really do. This has the potential to give very long legs to one of my favorite games. Want very much to get a whole room full of DSPers playing this like the old days. It's a callback to the days of early GR. It really is.

I haven't tried it yet but I would think 4 vs 4 is a little small considering the size of the maps, unless they made them small.

They are small in comparison to the main game, but still quite large compared to many competitive shooters. That said, 4v4 works here, though I wouldn't mind 6v6. Not big enough to fly or drive, but room to strategize. It's not a meat grinder by any measure, but you aren't going to get lost.

Good to know, if I can pull myself away from DOS2 I'll join you guys.

I'm not sure where I read it but I thought this was originally supposed to be 8 v 8. That was probably just a rumor
