Naples
Hey everyone, my name is Dan, and I've been friends with Marc for about 15 years. I think some of you guys play COD online with him, maybe you know my screenname, The Dancing Jew.
In any event, as sort of a summary of what happened...
March 2 or 3 - Marc (Naples) and Jennifer, his wife, got back from Iceland
-Marc had bad headaches and a fever for a number of days, went to Doctor a few times, doctor said it was flu or sinus infection, gave him meds, didn't help.
March 10 - Not getting better, Marc went to ER and after sitting in waiting room, was admitted overnight. He had a few really bad nights, fever, confusion, couldn't feel lower extremities, etc...
March 13 - Marc had respiratory failure and they had to put him on a ventilator and admitted him to NICU (Neurological Intensive Care Unit).
Since then, he has been in NICU, with what I would consider a gradual improvement, with some scary things along the way, like a MRSA staph infection in his lungs (which they are treating), and a few other things.
Bottom line is they seem to think he had some sort of viral meningitis or encephelatis that provoked an overreaction from his immune system where his immune system started attacking his central nervous system (brain and spine). They've treated the main problem with heavy duty steroids (to depress his immune system and stop it from attacking his own body) and also an advanced treatment called Plasmapheresis where his blood is taken out of his body, the blood cells are separated from the plasma (which contains the bad antibodies), and then a new plasma mixture (albumin and saline) is recombined with his blood cells and goes back into his body.
Today he was off the ventilator for a few hours which is a good sign, but it's still likely to be a long rollercoaster ride. He can't talk because he has a trach in, but he is able to recognize writing on a board. For example, today I wrote, "Malkin is out with an injury," (he hates Malkin) and he actually put up his middle finger LOL.
I also wrote on the board that his DSP buddies know about what's going on, and are hoping he is better soon. If there's anything else you guys would like me to try and pass along to him, I will try.
But for now, it looks like he will be in hospital for at least another month, and they're still he's not completely out of the woods. He still has very little lower extremity movement and probably some brain impairment going on. The doctors seem to think his brain issues will resolve, but they aren't quite as committal about the lower body movement (although he did wiggle his toes yesterday!).
I will try to keep all of you updated, as I know he really enjoyed talking to folks on this forum.

Lots of good fun playing shooters with Naples, man. Always a staple in MW matchups. Great sense of humor, to boot.
Again, hang tough, bro. Gotta get your paws wrapped around a controller again, playing some Battlefield with us!
But more to the point, you have some good things in your life to fight for, hoss-sounds like a good wife is among them...
