OT: What´s everyone listening to?

Post by pk500 »

Hi all:

I´ve discovered some great new music in the last few years in sports-gaming forums, of all places.

I feel a bit flat with music now, as I haven´t listened to any new, fresh stuff in a while. I´m not into rap, smooth jazz, opera or "hot" country, but all other genres are fair game.

So what is everyone listening to these days? What new or recent releases should I check out?

Thanks,
PK

Well, I´ve been doing anything possible to hear samples of the new Metallica disc that´s due out on June 10th. After 10 long years of disappointment, it seems as if they are finally putting out an album worthy of the Metallica name.

I really am getting into Linkin Park. Some say they are overrated but I really like them.

Holy Crap!! Another King´s X fan? I haven´t heard Black Like Sunday yet but have all of their other cds. Doug Pinnick has an amazing voice and Ty and Jerry are excellent musicians. I would highly recommend any King´s X for pure listening pleasure.

Wow, 3 people who have heard of King´s X in one thread. Pretty cool. I have not heard their newest, but have seen them live several times. An acquired taste, but definitely something different.

Make that four.

I saw King´s X open for Living Colour in the early 90s. I enjoyed their set. Haven´t really heard their new stuff though. Might be worth a listen.

As for me. I´m listening to the old standbys right now. Coldplay´s "A Rush of Blood to the Head," Nickel Creek´s "This Side" and I recently got a copy of Sean Watkins´ "26 Miles" from a friend that I´ve listened to quite a bit.

Well I´m listening to MANY different things lately, but...

Just bought the Iron Maiden ´Eddie´s Archive´ box set and it is excellent. Just a lot of b-sides and live material. Can´t go wrong with Maiden.

Just bought the latest releases from the Live Phish series. Just cannot seem to get enough of their live stuff. Every show is so extremely different.

Been listening to a lot of early Misfits. Great puck rock. They are basically a raunch-ier version of the Ramones.

A little Frank Zappa here and there.

Some Van Halen.

Actually just brought all my Smashing Pumpkin´s CD´s into the car and have been flipping through those. ´Melancholy´ is just so damn genius. Their last CD is pretty amzing too.

Just bought this beautiful Joni Mitchell CD recently. It is titled ´Hijira´. Good stuff. She has such a soothing voice.

Another recent purchase is a CD from this band called ´The Shins´. Great CD. Very 60´s english pop sounding. A lot like early Who or Kinks.

I think that is about it lately.

Lately I´ve been listening to damn near 75% of my collection on my bad-ass new Archos 20gig MP3 player. And I wouldn´t be doing it so effortlessly were it not for pk´s valuable input.

As for CD´s:

Lucinda Williams "World Without Tears"
Roy Hargrove: "The Rh Factor"
X-ecutioners: "Scratchology"
Led Zeppelin: "How the West Was Won"

I have to mention one of, if not the best albums to be released in the 90´s.

Band: the Afghan Whigs
Album: Gentlemen

This album is absolutely amazing. Greg Dulli is in rare form with his incredible and heartfelt lyrics and his amazing delivery vocally. I consider this album a must own for fans of music.

The rest of the Whigs collection is stellar as well so I would also recommend:

Up In It
Congregation
Black Love
1965

and don´t forget their Motown cover EP: Uptown Avondale

And of course Greg Dulli´s new band the Twilight Singers.

I can´t recommend this all enough.

Yep, that´s the one. I already had a couple of the tracks, but they´re all damn good. There are also some cool snippets of interviews with various DJ´s about influences, technique etc. Generally lots of fun.
