Another 360 price cut

Post by ScoopBrady »

I know this isn't exactly news to most of you but I figured I'd make this thread in case some didn't know. From $349 to $299.

I want to finally get a 360, but I also want to get a PS3, but I need to wait and see if improved versions of each come out soon. I'm not buying the crappy 40 GB PS3, and I'm not buying a 20 GB 360 if a 60 GB version is almost upon us for the same price.

And then I need to get an HDTV before I buy either of them. :)

I can't freaking believe Microsoft is doing the switcheroo, selling the 20GB for $299 while supplies last but introducing a 60GB model at the $349 price point to be the primary sku.

Just a thought since Microsoft hasn't even announced the price drop. Don't be too surprised if the 20GB replaces the arcade unit and the 60GB model becomes the new Pro Unit. ;)

The press release went out this morning, I think. Here's the exact wording from Microsoft:
In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.

I'll wait to some sites get ahold of one and check to see what chip set is in there etc. Hopefully it is a more reliable unit and then I will probably upgrade. I sold my Elite and am still chugging along on my launch repaired 360 and well I expect it to die sometime soon.

OK, so I'm insane. I got an unexpected bonus at work this week and I decided to take some of it and pick up one of the $299 Pro units at Target. If this one dies on me I think my head will explode. At least this unit was manufactured in May 2008 so at least I've got my first model with the new hardware design.

I still can't stand their support though. After setting up the new unit I called support to get them to allow me to do the license transfer to the new unit. I was told that even though my last unit died the day I transferred my licenses to it I would not be allowed to transfer licenses again for another 12 months. After spending over an hour with a supervisor explaining my situtation and how stupid it was that they would not transfer my content licenses to this new unit all I managed to get was a promise to send the request to the Live support specialists for review. What a bunch of crap. All they need to do is change one serial number in their records.

Well, I guess I'm back ... I just missed you guys so much I couldn't go on without you. So, is anyone still racing GRID?

Mix, I hate to tell you this but starting today Target is giving away a $25 GC with the purchase of a 360. Did you get the GC?

Yeah, I got the $25 GC. That's why I chose Target over the other retailers. Forgot to mention that part.

The Jasper chipsets should start to show up in Sept also, if the projections remain on target:

Looks like MS is going to the cheaper price point at the same time the consoles coming into stores will be more inexpensive to produce and more reliable. I'm sure the DVD drives will still make a racket, but that's what headphones are for... :D

I don't think the noise of the DVD drive will be in issue when the fall update comes out. One of the promised code changes includes saving a game to the hard drive and not using the DVD drive. Of course to avoid piracy, you will still need the game in the drive, but still, games will be quiet and cooler. Of course, i doubt u could get more than 1game -maybe 2 on a 20 gig drive.

Does anyone know what chip set is in the new 60 gig models? They need to identify this stuff clearly so someone can walk into a store and know they aren't getting a crappy old model.

I just bought a second PS3 and I want to replace my launch 360 since it is now out of warranty. Anyone know how to tell this stuff?

I agree, my 1 year old system is already showing signs of breaking down but i'll just replace it as it still has the best games and online package of the three. When it does quit i'll just get the $199 arcade pack this September.

That's great and all but until someone can confirm how to get a unti with the Jasper chipset I'm not buying another one.

I really hope I can keep myself from buying a 3rd 360. I already miss Forza 2 and COD 4. I kept my hard drive so the September price cut would have me back in business for only $200.00. That's a great price, but still to expensive when reliability is factored in. My 2nd 360 only lasted me 7 months.

My goal this generation is to either wait it out till next gen, or buy a PS3 if it ever gets to a reasonable price.
