Got a PSP for Christmas...now what?

Post by RobVarak »

My wife got me a PSP, which I'm totally stoked about. I need advice on what to do next. Are any of these accessory bundles any good? What size memory sticks do I need? What are the essential games? Any advice is appreciated.

Rob,

Happy Holidays to you. Good stuff with the PSP especially if you travel or just need a quick fix.

I love my PSP because I travel a lot. As far as games are concerned, depends are what you are into.

Here are my top 5:

1) Winning Eleven 9 2007
2) Lumines (the first one. never played the second)
3) Burnout Legends
4) Metal Gear Solid (portable ops)
5) MLB the Show '07 (new one comes out in March)

You should be able to pick these up on the cheap now.

A couple other random games that got a lot of play with me...

Sid Meier's Pirates
Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron
Grand Theft Auto Vice City and Liberty Stories (Just something about those games on the go)

I hope this helps a little.

BB

Great stuff, man. Thanks. I just read over at GWJ that there's a Pirates! for PSP, which basically just blows my socks off :) I buy that damn game for every platform they port it to, and enjoy it every time.

If you are a baseball fan then MLB 07: The Show is a no brainer. You will play it and be awed at how good it is for a portable game.

Congrats on the awesome present, Rob!

I'd agree with all of bphillipb's recommendations and also add Loco Rocco as a fun and unique title, if you like music/rhythm games you'll also like Gitaroo Man Lives which is fantastic. Final Fantasy Tactics is also great.

You might want to consider FIFA 08 and Jeanne D'Arc (Strategy RPG) too.

You will want a 4 gig memory stick as well. You can get those for $40 now. There's programs out there that you can rip your DVD's for play on the PSP. It really is a great little machine. Enjoy!

I've got Tiger 08 for it, and MLB 06, I think. Even at two years old, that baseball title is great! I also have Puzzle Quest, and Virtua Tennis 3. My wife just got me a gift card for another game, so I'm gonna be looking.

Great gift for people on the go...

Would you mind sending me a PM on what programs to get to do this? My wife is taking the kdis to San Diego in a few weeks and i want to rip some movies for them to watch on the plane.

Thanks

I highly recommend 'Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops'. Just make sure you don't buy 'Portable Ops PLUS', since it only expands the multiplayer aspect and excludes the stand alone story.

Other titles I've had fun with:

-Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (great strategy RPG even if you played the PSone original)
-Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth (a classic RPG)
-Daxter
-Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters

And of course, hold out for the upcoming 'God of War: Chains of Prometheus' and 'FFVII: Crisis Core'. And yeah, I'm a bit of an RPG geek, LOL. :D

Enjoy the system!

Just do a search. I use the Media Manager software for movies. But word of caution, when converting a movie, set it up and walk away, because it may take up to 5 hours to convert a 2 hour movie. Maybe someone knows of a faster way? If so, please share.

Sports games I play a lot:

NHL 07.
Madden 08.
Virtua Tennis 3.
Tiger Woods 08.
F1.

Non Sports:

MOH: Heroes 2.
Any of the Syphon Filter games (You won't be disapppoited).
Any of the Socom games (I preferred Navy's Team Fireteam Bravo 2).
MGS: Portable Ops.
Tekken: Dark Resurrection (Visually stunning).
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters.

With the latest updates, and with a good program, watching a flick on the PSP is a beauty. Enjoy.

Picked up SOCOM: Tactical Strike today with the card my wife bought me, and so far, it's great. It's Full Spectrum Warrior in the SEAL universe, which is perfect for this handheld.

So there's another I'll recommend...

I second Johnny's recommendation of Valkyrie Profile:Lenneth. I also wasn't sure if you like those footie simulator games so I thought I'd also let you know that you can import Football Manager 2007 or 2008 and play it on your PSP. Play Asia is a good import game site.

And if you like 'Lenneth', there is a very poor selling PS2 sequel, 'Silmeria' that is also very good and needs some love (plus, it can be found CHEAP!).

One recommendation I didn't read was Hot Shots Golf. This game looks and plays beautifully on the PSP. It's the one game that I miss terribly. You should be able to find it fairly cheaply new and/or used.

scoop

You mentioned that you can import Football Manager from Play Asia... I checked and didn't see it. Do you have any other suggestions? I have wanted this game on the PSP since it came out but I couldn't find it.

Thanks.

To be honest I just assumed you could import it from Play Asia. I guess I was wrong about that. I saw it at my local Fry's so if you have one by you I'd check there. I found this place but I know nothing of the site:

Just a quick check in. I know that when the PSP first came out, many people complained about a lack of games and the ports of ones that already existed. Is that problem gone now? Plenty to choose from?

There are a ton of great games, IMO. I went ape s*** and bought way more than I can even play because there are so many great bargain and used titles.

I keep meaning to play around with the media options etc, but I just end up playing Puzzle Quest or Parappa instead :)

I'm just on the fence about getting one. What are the graphics equal to? PS1?

Slightly and I mean slightly worse than a PS2. Seriously. They are outstanding for a hand held.

Some games look better than a PS2 game. I would put Daxter, Spyhon Filter and the God of War demo as 3 games that look better than a PS2 game. God of War on the PSP is amazing.

Agreed. My son's friend and my nephew both have PSP's, and I'm amazed at its graphical punch for a handheld. TOCA was pretty as hell, and I was surprised at how good GRAW looked.

Take care,
