I feel about the same about the baseball games. But my method of ´rental´ will probably mean that I purchase the game for $49.99 and then sell it on half.com for 38-40 (if it turns out that I don´t like the game). That way I get to use the game for a few weeks and actually have a manual to read so I know all the ins and outs. Plus, I would rather give my money to the developers than to Blockbuster. Besides, the Blockbusters I go to rarely get anything but EA games.

I doubt I will like ASBB. I never do like it. But maybe this year will be different. I have some doubts about MVP as well. Everyone talked about what a great start EA got off to last year with 2003, but that was an incredibly shallow game. Every other out was a line drive to an infielder. And I didn´t love the idea of pitching being based on my ability to use a gamepad. WSB was fun last year, but I hate cursor hitting and the only option WSB has was way to easy to hit. But it was a fun game and the controls for fielding made for a fun arcade baseball game. I sort of doubt we will see a baseball game from Microsoft this year. At least we have heard nothing about one yet.

I will get Thief, but unlike BD, I have the opposite feelings. I much prefer using a keyboard/mouse for FPS games. But if Thief is like Deus Ex Invisible War, it may be easier to just get the Xbox version and not deal with the inevitable PC patch and video card issues. It is not like the old days where the PC version will be so superior that I would not think about the console version. Eiodos/Ion Storm just made the same game for 2 platforms and did not take advantage of the higher end PC power.

I never pre-order games, but I guess you could say I have a mental pre-order list. Since my recent gaming cutback, my spring purchase list is pretty small right now, all on Xbox:

Full Spectrum Warrior
Rallisport Challenge 2

I´ll give a long look at Driver 3, too. Oh, there´s a little title called Halo 2 that I´ll buy, but who knows when that will be released?

I´ll probably get a baseball game on the cheap a month or two after they´re on the market. If last year was any indication, all the games were mediocre, so rentals and play-testing will be needed. And if the games are as exceedingly average as last year, I won´t buy a baseball title. ESPN NFL, Rivals and Inside Drive 2004 really have raised the ante for team sports games for me this year, and I won´t tolerate mediocrity anymore.

IndyCar Series 2004 is on the "must-get" list, but I hope to get it as a freebie through work.

That´s it! Short and sweet: Full Spectrum Warrior and Rallisport Challenge 2.

Take care,

Just last night, I headed over to GameStop to reserve a couple games.

Definitely picking up Winning Eleven 7 for the PS2. That´s a no brainer. Just wish it was being released sooner.

I hesitated when I was asked what other game I wanted to reserve. I was going back and forth between ASB and MVP, finally deciding on ASB 05´. Worse comes to worse, I can always transfer the credit over to MVP if I´m hearing lukewarm previews/reviews. I doubt I´ll be able to hold off on not purchasing the first baseball game of 2004. I just don´t have the willpower. I did get a free t-shirt for reserving ASB 05´. Hell no I won´t wear outside the home.

Fight Night definitely interests me, as does Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. I´ll most likely rent both, as I´ve yet to complete the first Splinter Cell and EA´s first gaming editions frighten me a bit.

I re-bought Splinter Cell again last night for $19. Contemplating whether to remove the wrapping.......

My preorder list is all mental as well.

MX Unleashed - Bonus that it´s only $40

ESPN Baseball - I doubt the High heat series will even have a game this year, MVP I don´t trust yet, and ASB didn´t satisfy me the last two years, so I doubt it will this year.

That´s about it. I´m on a strict budget this year. I may pick up a game or two cheap, like the Batman:Sin Tsu one, since it´s $20 new.

Didn´t Microsoft (Inside pitch) buy High Heat? Any word on how good or bad that game is shaping up?

Made a deal with myself and wife that I´m not "buying" anymore games until I finish at least ONE of the ones I have. That doesn´t mean I can´t trade... but no buying.

So, I have to finish FFX, FFX-2, Call of Duty, Dark Cloud 2, C&C:Generals, or Prince of Persia before I move on to a new game.

I´m sort of in the same boat with James. I want to finish Call of Duty, Prince of Persia, and play my copy of F-Zero GX some more before I move on to new pastures. So I´m probably going new-gameless until March.

But the games I´m dying for:

Half-Life 2
Full Spectrum Warrior (coop on XBL, oh yeah!)
Halo 2

Online will play a big role in my baseball purchasing decision, so it will probably come down to ESPN MLB or whatever Microsoft offers. My wife has my PS2 with her until May (she´s working out of state) so MVP will probably not be my choice.

EDIT:
Forgot to add Splinter Cell 2. The online "spies versus mercs" mode should make for some amazing poker nights.

[ This message was edited by: Brando70 on 22-01-2004 08:44 ]

I´m in the same boat as James. I definitely need to finish some of my current games before I invest in any more. I still have a list of must haves though:

Full Spectrum Warrior
Ninja Gaiden
Rallisport Challenge 2
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
Star Craft: Ghost

But my list of unfinished games I need to get through is even longer:

Baldur´s Gate: Dark Alliance
Crimson Skies
Ghost Recon
Ghost Recon: Island Thunder
Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto Vice City
Knights of the Old Republic
Links (single-player mode)
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Project Gotham Racing 2 (finish up challenges)
Rainbow Six 3
Splinter Cell (downloadable content)
Top Spin (still not #1)

And that´s just the Xbox stuff. I´ve got a ton of PC stuff that I bought and never got to as well. Too many to list. I´m actually considering selling a bunch of it and spending more time doing something active. My wife is into Kayaking and we´re picking one up for me in the spring. I went with her to the local canoe club meeting on Tuesday but unfortunately half the time I was thinking about how to shave a few seconds off the Ring, how bad my scores are going to be for this weeks Links competition, and how much fun it was going to be to take the Dark path through KOTOR after I finish the light side this weekend. Hmmmm.... I think I´m obsessed.

WE:7
Full Spectrum Warrior
Half Life 2 (Xbox, if it comes out)
Halo 2

I´m sure there are others that I don´t even know about, though.

As to baseball, I didn´t even buy a baseball game last year for, like, only the 2nd time in 10 yrs. HH was just not as crisp as it had been the previous years (I found the animations slowed down the responsiveness, to bad effect). MVP was interesting, but as has been said, quite shallow. I did however love the new pitching model, seemingly based on EA´s superb kicking system in Madden. It IMO is a great aproach to creating a natural and more realistic possibility for pitches to miss the target. Take a little off, it´s easier to hit the strike zone; dig a little deeper, and you better nail it or it is missing the mark. I like that much more than the machine-like precision of pitching in most video games. But of course there is more to baseball than just pitching.

I would love to see IP this year be a polished-up HH with excellent online play. That game I would get in a second (assuming there were others here who had it to play with!).

Splinter Cell may be interesting. Is it online on XBL, or just PS2? It seems like it might have some excellent online co-op modes, as well as competitive online stuff. If the engine works, it would be nice to have a 3rd person shooter in the poker night mix.

I am curious about Thief, never played any of ´em.

Curious also about Fable. It may suck, or it may be unique and really good.

And of course, there is Indy Car, which I may or may not be interested in, depending on if it has a little something that we don´t know what it is yet but may be able to guess what it might be that it will have. . . . maybe.

And then Driver 3 maybe, although I may just rent it. I loved the 1st one, but that was quite a while ago.

I just upgraded my son´s Blockbuster Freedom game pass to "super" - you can have two games out for any length for $34.95 a month. We´ve gotten our money´s worth out of the single pass, but our gaming tastes aren´t the same.

I´ll rent all the baseball games, but I have a feeling I´ll be settling on ESPN Baseball for the XBox or MVP on the PS2.

Other than that I can´t think of any titles I´m really hot for right now. Pro Race Driver 2 is a ways down the road, but it has my attention.
It´s online for XBL. Apparently, one side infiltrates, the other side tries to stop them. Sounds like it would be a cool twist to the usual kill anything that moves online experience.
John,
You might want to give a look at gamefly. You could rent 3 games for 29.99 a month. The only bad part is about the 4 day wait to get it by mail. Two games a month are 21.99 and that´s perfect for me.
