F1 on PS2?

Post by Laggard »

Are there any decent F1 games for the PS2?

I´m having trouble finding any that have received outstanding or even really good reviews.

Thanks in advance.
First things first: Welcome to the DSP Forum. Good to have you here. Stick around!

Simple answer to your question: Nope.

Unfortunately, all four F1 games for the PS2 are lousy if you seek realism -- F1 Championship Season 2000 F1 2001 and F1 2002 by EA Sports and Formula One 2001 by 989 Sports.

In fact, the last truly good F1 console game was Formula 1: Championship Edition for the PSX, known in Europe as F1 ´97. It´s worth picking up if you can find it online or in a bargain bin -- a brilliant game.
Thanks for the reply.

How about CART or GT simulations for the PS2?

I´m currently obsessed with Gran Turismo 3 but would love a change of pace.

Thanks for your hospitality.

F1 2002 is pretty decent, but the control is kinds twitchy. If you have a decent PC, then the PC version is considered one of the best ever. You can find it for only $20 at places like Best Buy. I have both versions.
The only CART games are CART Fury and Driven, both which you should avoid like genital warts.

CART World Series was released by Sony in 1997 for the PSX and is a very good game. Like F1: Championship Edition, it´s worth finding if you´re a CART fan.

As for GT games, you MUST get your hands on F355 for the PS2. Sure, it only has one car -- the Ferrari F355 -- but the driving model is the best of any console racing game, period. Another candidate is Le Mans 24 Hours. The PS2 version isn´t as good as the superb Dreamcast version, but you can find the game new for around $20, I think, making it a good value.

I´m playing the Xbox version of Total Immersion Racing, a sports-car racer. Avoid. The driving model is pretty dodgy.

I still play F1: Championship Edition for the PSX. It is probably my favorite racing game of all time. I wonder why someone just doesn´t make a near copy of the controls in that game and put it in the PS2/XBox.

That game was by Psygnosis, correct? Do they do racing games anymore (I´m not too up on the F1 console games these days...don´t get to review them since we´ve already got two stellar racing guys onboard (PK and Randy Magruder)).

I have to disagree with my esteemed colleagues. At least on full realism settings, I didn´t like the braking/turn-in physics of the cars....that killed it for me.

I enjoy the F1 2002 from EA, but at the same time, it´s also sloppy on the physics...so I don´t play it much.

Randy:

First things first: Good to see you again!

Yeah, F1: CE did have a bit too much understeer on turn-in. But I was able to dial it out with some pretty funky car setups.

It´s funny: F1:CE was based on 1997, the last year in F1 with slicks and wide-track cars. It´s almost like Psygnosis knew that F1 cars would have notorious understeer starting in 1998 due to grooved tires and narrow tracks, so they modeled it in advance in F1:CE.

Well, the F1 console stuff has a ways to go before it matches the intensity level of PC gaming. It wouldn´t hurt to have a solid F1 sim put on XBox live, either!
Actually they do sort of they go by the name of Bizzare Creations a U.K. Based and Microsoft Xbox developer. They were the ones who did F1 Championship Edition as well as the previous title called Formula 1 on the PSX.

They recently did to racing games MSR for the Dreamcast and Project Gotham for the Xbox. Their next game is Project Gotham 2. I feel they should do an F1 game for the Xbox. But that´s up to Microsoft !

I still have F1CE and Project Gotham, both are Stellar.

[ This message was edited by: Rodster on 05-12-2002 15:23 ]
