OT-Genuinely Funny Video Games?

Post by webdanzer »

Anyone have any recommendations of 'funny' video games, current or classic, that actually were funny?

The recently released 'Stubbs the Zombie' advertises its humor, and it got me thinking about the subject. I really *like* to play games that truly make me laugh, but the ones that do are few and far between.

The original Crazy Taxi was funny as hell, full of subtlety.

I loved it when you drop off the priest at the church, and he says, "Hey, you're one HELL of a driver!" Or when you have the teenyboppers in the back saying, "Hey, watch where you're going, jerk!" and when the dude gets in and says in a Jeff Spicoli voice, "Take me to Kentucky Fried Chicken."

Yeah, I was f*cked up most of the time I played CT, but it always made me laugh.

Take care,

The Monkey Island series... One of them was on the PS2.

My vote would go for Sam and Max Hit the Road from Lucasarts. It's my favorite adventure game of all time.

Never really got into the series, but Leisure Suit Larry was fairly humorous.

And I just rented a game on Xbox recently I can't recall the name of now. But the main character who I don't believe was human walked around drunk and saying some funny s**t. Pretty popular game as I remember.

Space Channel 5, especially when the gloved one appears.

As Brent mentioned, the Monkey Island series is genuinely funny. Another Lucas Arts title for PC that is also genuinely funny is Grim Fandango. I can't think of too many console games that are funny but Armed and Dangerous for the Xbox comes to mind. Destroy All Humans is pretty funny as well.

Anything Tim Schaefer has been involved with like the aforementioned Grim Fandango and the recently released Psychonauts.

Planet Moon Studios has also put out funny and good games with Giants and Armed and Dangerous.

Funny is the thing videogames do least well unfortunately.

I agree. I think there's really only a handful, and I see some evidence of that because, with the exception of Mix's mention, (Of which I've never heard, and I'll have to check out!) the games mentioned already were pretty much the ones I was thinking of.

I LOVED Giants: Kabuto and Monkey Island (the earlier MI ones more), and Psychonauts rocks. The little I've played of both Armed and Dangerous and Grim Fandango seemed good, too. (I need to go back to both of them.)

Dan, were you thinking of Bard's Tale? If so, yeah, that had its moments. :) Conker, too, had some funny bits but a lot of lame stuff.

Thanks!

Yes that was a quite funny game. They are good developers. Same guys who did that recent F.E.A.R game which is getting great reviews.

NOLF was way under-rated. Funny while still being a good shooter for its day.

I've enjoyed the heck out of the little I've played of FEAR so far.

I sat in the middle of Best Buy trying to figure out which I wanted to get...either Quake 4 or FEAR. I've read good things about both, but ended up with the known Quake 4. Not sure if I made the right choice...I guess we'll find out when I install it later tonight. I just got the feeling that FEAR was going to be a Half-Life 2 clone...at least that's what I took from it while looking at the box and packaging.

I am biased but Peasant's Quest is pretty funny and actually a decent old school adventure game:

I bought "Psychonauts" for my nephew & niece and they're still playing this little character called Raz, a young psychic who sneaks into Psychic Camp in the hopes of becoming a famed Psychonaut. All characters are cute and the main beef of the game is displayed when Raz enters someone's mind.

Fusion Frenzy has GOT to be one of the funniest games I've ever played multiplayer. I never tried it single player, but it is extremely funny on quite a few levels when playing w/ friends.

Totally forgot about NOLF. That truly is a wonderful game and downright hilarious. My favorite shooter game of all time.

The new, Stubbs the Zombie, game is also supposed to be funny.

See my thread opening post. :)

Actually, I picked it up. Barely got to play it, but I'm sensing they hit some of the right notes because the opening music for a game with the horrific theme of brain-eating zombies is a nice rendition of the Chordette's 'Lollipop'

:D

 So keen to make my point I obviously don't read.

To atone I'll suggest another. Simpsons Hit and Run I thought was very funny which is rare for a videogame trying to capture a license in real life that is funny. That almost never happens. Tons of inside jokes and simpsons style humour in it. Also it's not a bad little game in its own right as GTA rip-offs go. Much better than something like True Crim.
