OT: KaZaa Lite is becoming a drag

Boys:
 
 Not sure about your experience, but trying to download new releases through KaZaa Lite is getting to be a drag because the record companies are getting smart.
 
 So many dummy files of the "hot, new tunes" are thrown up on servers around the world that it makes finding legitimate files very tough, at least for new music. The dummy files either are filled with blips and sound blemishes or are simply loops of one chord, over and over.
 
 I´m using AllMusicGuide.com to learn the actual lengths of tunes so I can find legit files, but sometimes even those are fakes.
 
 Thank God for Streamripper. At least I´m still downloading a stready stream -- no pun intended -- of new music by recording Shoutcast streams. Discovering a lot of cool stuff, too.
 
 Anyone have any alternatives to KaZaa, such as less populated networks where there are more legit files?
 
 Oh, and smart-asses can save the sarcasm: I´m not going to run to the music shop and buy the CD. The RIAA can f*ck me. <IMG SRC="images/forum/icons/icon_smile.gif">

 I have been having no problem with Kazaa lately. I just downloaded the new Korn on the day of its release without one single fake track. The trick is to only download 192 files. Usually the fake tracks are 128´s. Hope it helps.

Hehe, I just got the new Korn too. People are saying it´s so much better than the last two, but I don´t see what was wrong with Issues and Untouchables. Sounds about the same in terms of style and quality to me.
 
 As for PK, didn´t you used to use WinMX? I still use that and stay away from Kazaa altogether. I still run into some albums that have large numbers of fake tracks being shared, but the selection is still good. I also found that some people with the "real" tracks are adding something like "rns" of some other acronym to seperate it from the fakes.
 
 BTW, all of this discussion has been theoretical, and in no way can be used as an admission of any wrongdoing on my part. The word "I´ in the above discussion refers to "my friend", not myself personally.

 It´s a pay service, so that might turn enough people off from the start. But $10 a month for 6 gigs of downloads. And it has a universal search engine for every newsgroup out there...I could search for "Take A Look In The Mirror" and it returns every newsgroup that houses those files. Even only audio, images, container files, etc. It´s just a newsgroup browser without the pain in the ass part of actually browsing.
 
 Not to mention you can check off files, queue them up in a zip file (server-side) and then download a single zip after you compile them all. That way you can use a download manager to get 1 large file instead of 50 small ones.
 
 *In Theory*, that would mean that you could get anything that comes out, usually on the day of release. Movies (Gothika and Matrix:Revolutions come to mind), whatever you could possibly be looking for. If it´s new, it´ll be there, and there isn´t the peer-to-peer BS. Download speeds I´ve seen from their servers are as fast as 600K/sec.

 Interesting. I hate to pay for anything I can essentially get for free, but if P2P continues to be a pain in the ass due to dummy files and Streamripper loses its pull, I may consider it.
 
 But right now, Streamripper is rocking for me. I just found a fantastic blues rock station and am ripping some fantastic tunes I´ve never heard before right to my hard drive as we speak, with no P2P hassles.

 I´ve used them all and still even use Kazaa Lite some for older stuff, but I´ve found that SoulSeek is the best client out there right now. Full albums, obscure stuff, new stuff, and even some stuff before it gets released can be found with it. I have yet to download one dummy file with it. Really good stuff...give it a try.

 Quick follow-up: I just downloaded Soulseek, and the queues for downloads of basic and popular songs make WinMX´s lines look short.
 
 The shortest queue I´ve found for any Oasis song, for example, is 23. A bunch of queues are 243 users long!
 
 Am I doing anything wrong? Is there any way I can move toward the head of the class?
 
 Otherwise, I don´t care how clean the files are: There´s no way I´m waiting that long to download one damn song.

 Ah, I just did a bit of research. Soulseek moves you to the front of the queue based on how much you donate to the developer.
 
 I´ll pass. If I´m going to spend $5-10 per month to get music, I´d rather take the assured, quick binary route like Terry.

 Just a note...I have never donated a dime and I get most of what I want a lot faster at speeds a lot quicker than Kazzaa.
 
 You may need to fiddle with it a bit, but like I said, I rarely have any trouble finding what I want and getting it fast.

That´s weird, pk. Most of the time when I click on something to download, I start getting it right away. There are always multiple users with the same file.
 
 Anyway, I´ve never had any problem getting what I want pretty much when I want.

 Actually, I don´t have anything like that, nor have I ever looked. I learned to use IRC about 5 years ago from a guy at work and I have never used any of the other P2P services since...
 
 I simply use the Undernet or Efnet channels and go from there. I actually created a document a few years back called "mIRC for dummies" I can probably send you if I can find it when I get home from work tonight. I created it for all of my computer illiterate friends and it seemed to help them. Everyone I know uses IRC now because it´s just that much better.
 
 I have YET to download something that was ´planted´ by a record company or anything. The worst thing I have experienced is downloading a whole cd at 128 bits rather than the 192+ I´m accustomed to.
