I don't care about the greatest graphics, just want a smooth playing footy game and this delivers it in spades.

I started a season with Portsmouth and won a tough 1-0 game versus Oxford United on semi-pro.

I'm playing portable only as my TV is always tied up and it is perfect.
I really wish they could make it so you could take your FUT and make it cross platform. Playing that on the go would make me buy two copies in a heartbeat.

Packed an 89 rated Bale and an inform TOTW Insigne in back to back packs last night...ugh...and now a straight up swap for Pogba (475k coins) was in order to stick him in the midfield w/ fellow 87 rated Kante. Beast midfield. What a pack opening! LOL.

Sweet, that’s great pack luck. Was that just on a regular golden pack or FUT champions mode? Haven’t played it as much as I want to due to other games. A much cheaper player in midfield that has been playing solid D for me is Bakayoko.

Seems like everyone is rocking Bakayoko on the cheap, so he must be really good for the price...that blonde hair is everywhere!

The packs were simple jumbo gold packs I eared from a couple FUT Drafts, so it was regular gold packs. I saved about 3 regulars and 3 jumbos and opened em last night. That was the result.

I don't play any of the online stuff...I get my ass handed to me, so it's all single player stuff for me. Squad Battles and FUT Drafts.

Yeah in FUT champions there are a lot of good players but with Pogba now in your hands you should do rather well in Seasons or Squad Battles which I am enjoying a lot.

Yeah Pogba is pretty sweet...just a little overpriced IMO...should be around 350K...his pace isn't quite fast enough to justify it. But defensively, him and Kante in the midfield are beasts.

Jeebus, I wish I would only ONE TIME get a player worth 250K+ in a pack! It would bankroll my whole year! I don't play as much as I have in past versions, but I still prefer to play vs humans in Online League than vs. the CPU. Most times I have had very close, tight games, but building up my squads is very painstaking and slow. I will say it is very disconcerting that the recorded games they have of the top players all seem to be 5-4 or 7-5 Lacrosse games. Sadly, I don't think the devs see that as as much of a problem as I do....

Just picked this game up and really blown away by "The Journey" mode.

It's very well done - the presentation, story etc...top notch all the way. I would actually pay for a game that only had a series of these branching stories that involve playing matches, practicing and mucking around in a main hub. The story they've created is actually interesting and makes the on field gameplay take on a feel I've never experienced in sports games.

I put my Alex Hunter on the Spurs to start and it was really cool to see him interacting with actual members of the current club. They've really bumped up the facial detail/animations in this mode as well, which makes everything super realistic (especially on the One X enhanced version). Just beautiful.

I'd also echo the sentiments on these boards about how far Fifa has come. I've been playing PES consistently for the past 15 years, but Fifa has certainly caught up in terms of gameplay. It might not have the precise control as PES, but I actually think that's now a good thing. The somewhat more physical and deliberate feel of Fifa seems better suited for mid-field build up and overall realism. The presentation, commentary and game modes are also so far ahead of PES now, that I'm not sure I could ever go back.

All of this and I still haven't tried FUT which everyone raves about.

This is how you do a sports game :)

Son of a b*tch. I have been saving almost all of the packs I have accumulated playing squad battles over the last few weeks in preparation for the Team of the Year cards...I didn't want to open any until all of the players were released at the same time. My 5 year old who loves watching me play FIFA was begging me to open a pack or two...just because. Well...packed the regular Ronaldo...holy crap. Biggest pull ever and OF COURSE...it couldn't have been the TOTY because they were only in packs for 24 hours. Tomorrow apparently ALL of the players are back in packs. If I had only waited another 10 hours or so. DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT. Anyway, sold the CR7 and my In Form DeBruyne and got the TOTY De Bruyne, who was who I wanted anyway, so it wasn't ALL bad. Just missed out on about 4 million coins. That's all. LOL. DAMMIT.

It’s just amazing how some people would spend 100s of dollars in an effort to score the shiniest TOTY blue card. It’s like a lottery really, what are the odds of scoring the top 5 players in the world? That’s how I’ve been collecting my packs from playing mainly Squad battles on Legendary trying to squeeze every XP possible and tournament matches. The highest card I pulled was T. Kroos a few months back but to see some Pros on youtube spending crazy money on EA just to get nothing is priceless.

My midfield is pretty strong but my forwards need someone more lethal like Ronaldo. I should start using more my TOTW players but they are just rental players.

Not gonna lie, I've gotten a few gift cards for FIFA points for Christmas, and I have spent about 50 bucks myself on points just to open some packs when I didn't have any and there were some TOTW players I was eyeing, but I definitely haven't put THAT much into it. Pair that with the 20-30 packs I got for buying the Icon edition and I've built up a pretty sick team with all of my SBCs, Single Player Squad Battles and FUT Draft rewards.

96 De Bruyne (TOTY)
91 Kane (POTM)
89 Griezmann (IF)
88 Salah (POTM)
88 Lloris
87 Kante'
87 Hamsik
86 Reus
85 Lacazette
85 Varane
85 Azpilicueta
84 Zaha (IF - probably my favorite player to play with)
84 Roberto (IF)
84 Baines (IF)
84 Lozano (IF)

Griezmann, De Bruyne and Zaha are the only tradeable cards that I would never trade. I love playing with them all. Obviously I have to hang on to Salah and Kane because they are POTM and you can't trade them after you do the SBCs to get them.

I am f'n addicted to this game...I barely play anything else.

That’s an A+ team DB, what rated 85-86 put together? I haven’t tried the SBC as much as I would like to. And now I remember why. You can get burned easily with lesser players or get very lucky but not too often. I remember trading a player like Coutinho who was my best player in that particular SBC team for a card that was supposed to be 81+ TOTW. Most of the time, you get the lowest player at 81 and maybe a keeper in a league that no one cares. Come on EA.

But kudos to them, FUT has become a casino for football fans, there’s enough smorgasbord for everyone to enjoy, but DO spend your money while at it with the many different modes to build on your team.

I still rather keep my chemistry at 100% when playing online/offline, so I stopped the SBCs. But yeah FUT tourneys and SB is where you can get nice cash for your gameplay rewards.

I have about 200.000 coins saved so far. The player I’d like to get is Pogba, but he’s still going around the mid 300Ks. Will keep on grinding...

It's an 87 rated team w/ 100 chemistry...so it's legit.

The SBCs are cool if you just have some extra players on your roster that you can spare, or you can buy them for pretty cheap sometimes. Check FutBin or FutHead and you can get some ideas of teams to build for specific SBCs and their associated cost.

I've had Pogba a few times, even his 89 rated inform and I'm just not a big fan of playing with him. He's too slow and lanky for me. I'd much rather use Kante in the middle as my defensive midfielder. Pogba is expensive for a reason tho, so clearly people like playing with him.

For some reason,I’ve played tons of EA sports games, but never even tried to learn what these FUT modes are about. Is the idea you start with a crappy team and earn points to get better players (through random card packs)? How painful is it to start? The idea of playing with a bunch of scrubs for a week or two doesn’t seem fun (but maybe I’m misunderstanding).

That is kinda the deal. You get a bunch of achievable challenges early on. Its a fun mode (not just Fifa) IMO. You can get "packs" for many things. There are many things to do to get new stuff for your team regardless of the level of your team. Definitely give it a try.

You pretty much have it down, but as Diablo said there are lots of other ways to earn packs or players. I strictly play offline and after this past weekend my team is fairly stacked. All kinds of pack luck this weekend which is a huge deal to getting a higher end team, but you can still build a pretty nice team for 10-20k coins to have a ton of fun with in the challenges.

If you don't want to grind out the earlier stages, I recommend dropping like 20 bucks on a bunch of fifa points and opening like 10 gold packs (150-300 points)...you'll have a pretty good team to start with and it won't feel so much like work in the beginning. It goes against a lot of what people complain about with EA, but shortcutting is necessary IMO so you don't get frustrated. Once you have an 80 or so ranked team, the game just opens up on the field a lot more and it's great.

They discovered recently over at OS that there would be no ‘stand alone’ World Cup game from EA this time and that it would just be downloadable content in FIFA 18.

Here’s the official release.

https://play.st/2r9T9Zm

Celebrate the World’s Game in EA Sports FIFA 18 with the addition of football’s biggest tournament: the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. Available to FIFA 18 owners through a free* content update on May 29, the FIFA World Cup in FIFA 18 lets you experience the greatest tournament on earth through authentic gameplay, teams, stadiums, and more.

In addition to playing through the authentic tournament in a variety of modes, you’ll also get the unique chance to rewrite history by creating your own Custom FIFA World Cup Tournament. Determine the tournament draw the way you want to, using any national team in FIFA 18. Yes, even the United States, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Choose any of the 32 qualified nations and play through the authentic tournament structure, from the group stage to the final in Moscow. Or if you prefer to just play a match or two, jump into an offline match solo or with friends using official teams, players, kits, presentation elements, and authentic stadium atmospheres from the FIFA World Cup.

The most popular mode in FIFA 18, Ultimate Team, is also unveiling a fresh FIFA World Cup experience. New Icons, a chemistry system, and player items with new ratings are just some of the ways that FIFA World Cup Ultimate Team provides unique FUT action.

You’ll find new Icons from the tournament’s illustrious history, as well as up-to-date squads from every qualified nation with new ratings, so you’ll have everything you need to build your international dream squad. FIFA World Cup Ultimate Team has versions of Single Player Draft, Online Draft, and Squad Building Challenges, as well as Single Player and Online Tournament modes that let you play through realistic brackets with your squad.

Note that for every Standard or Premium pack you purchase in FIFA World Cup Ultimate Team, you will receive equivalent pack value in FUT 18.

Thanks to authentic teams, kits, badges, match balls, and the famous tournament trophy, the FIFA World Cup in FIFA 18 delivers a complete and official tournament experience. All 12 stadiums from Russia are included in the FIFA World Cup update. Enjoy the tournament’s sights and sounds, thanks to authentic pitch environments, advertisements, dressings, national team banners, and high-resolution crowds.

The FIFA 18 World Cup content update will be available to FIFA 18 owners on PS4 through a free* download on May 29.

At least it is more than just an Ultimate Team mode, but I miss the old stand-alone game with qualifying and everything.

Thanks for the update. I was questioning myself last week if EA would bring the WC game separately. It’s the biggest event in the world after all. I had a time off from FIFA lately because FUT has become a $$$ grabbing machine. And when you face players that have all the icons, in-form players you’re quite at a disadvantage.

Squad Battles is where I am at these days, reached level 1 in seasons single mode and the next update is nice although their focus is to still bring more attention to those packs which for the record this year, has been terrible for me.

I have to say, I am really digging this WC18 mode. It’s not perfect, and a couple of things I find very annoying, but overall I’m enjoying it. The gameplay seems a little different and all in good ways. I’ve mostly played FIFA18 in squad battles mode, once I discovered how FUT-lucrative that mode is. Online FUT Seasons mode, my former staple, is way too hit or miss for me anymore - for every fun and competitive game (which are always more fun and enjoyable than any v. CPU game), there are two or three matches that are too far out of balance either in terms of squad quality or player ability.

But anyway, I’ve been playing some offline WC mode and it’s fun! The ball seems a bit looser and harder to cobtrol. The defense seems to anticipate passes better and longer passes are harder to get through. The through balls are more surprising, in a way, and the goalies seem a bit different. They’ve added a bunch of new faces, even for teams that aren’t in the tournament, for example Christian Pulisic now has his real face.

One thing I don’t like is that the squads are more limited than they should be. I should be able to pick from a wider range of players to build my 23-man roster. And more critically, we should not be limited to only 18 players available for matches - the entire 23 should be available for every game, just like in the IRL tournaments.

But other than that (and the 18-player limit is a big one), I think the mode is great! All the WC18 stadiums, updates players, the ability to play the real tourney or customize it as you wish - I think it’s a nice effort.

I’m not as sold on the WC FUT mode, however. Time will tell, but with no transfer market and limited gameplay modes to earn coins or packs, it feels a lot like you’d really have to spend and buy packs to really enjoy this mode. Also it’s just plain weird to pick a national team (does this only mean the kits you wear? Hard to tell) and then have a squad made up of a bunch of players who aren’t from that nation. I’m not sure if this mode is anything more than a cash grab (in regular FUT and especially with squad battles rewards, I’ve bever paid real money or felt like I had to to get packs). But the normal, v. CPU tournament mode is definitely fun for me and getting me more excited for this years USA-free World Cup (aka Putin cash-grab). [One thing I will say is that the US’s failure to qualify really made my life coices as far as going to Russia a hell of a lot less painful!! And there’s no way in hell im going to Qatar, either!]

I think they tightened up the gameplay a notch whereas the AI is more aware of their surroundings. The pace is a bit slower which I like. They are smarter in cutting down your passes and considering I was pretty done with the regular game, I applaud EA for bringing the interest back in me but more importantly for making the WC a free one at that. And knowing their way of thinking they could have charged us all $30 bucks for the WC mode.

It’s a bummer that you can’t exchange players in WC FUT mode and have the market open for buying or selling, but on the other hand I must admit that the puck luck on those packages is much better that the regular FUT mode.

Just for entering the WC mode, I managed to get an 89 A. Griezmann from the get go. Now you don’t have to meticulousnesly build your team based on players’ nationalities, clubs, etc but the way you can add chemistry to your team is by sorting out your chosen Nation with players either from Asia, SouthAmerica, Europe or Africa regardless of which continent they are playing or nationality.

One thing you may want to tinker with is formations. By choosing Argentina as my team, the default formation was 4-3-3 but I just could not feel the chosen players playing to their potential. By changing to my favorite narrow 4-1-2-1-2 formation even though some players were out of their natural position, I was better at playing the style of football that I enjoy.

Speaking of package luck, I have about 50.000 coins from FUT mode and at 5000 coins each I managed to score a Legendary player while adding players like Iniesta and Gundogan. Even if your team is mixed up of different continent players, achieving 100% chemistry is much easier to do here.

Also, don’t forget to test your luck on SBC challenges, although the cards are top notch, they are limited to their usage in terms of number of matches. For example, by submitting a particular SA challenge, I scored on a D. Maradona 97 card albeit good for just 7 games.

It’s a good addition to FIFA 18, like I was mentioning earlier it rekindled my interest in the game whereas I was all but given up at the quality of teams assembled by other players in online FUT mode.

When the hell is FIFA 18 going into the EA Access Vault? Seems late this year. Trying to milk more sales from World Cup mode, I presume.
