For those who don´t understand the passion for soccer

Post by pk500 »

Boys:

Anyone who doesn´t understand the passion for soccer, especially in England, should check out this story that a friend sent to me:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
From the Times News Service, London
SPORT: (FOOTBALL) NOT TONIGHT DEAR, I´M GOING TO WATCH THE MATCH
Ashling O´Connor says fans are happy not to play at home
550 words
THE passions of Wolverhampton Wanderers fans are almost as likely to be
inflamed by the performance of their team in the Barclaycard
Premiership than by making love to their partners, according to a survey
published today (Thursday).
Wolves widows are in for a lonely nine months as it emerged that two
out of five supporters of the club would rather watch their team play.
Like Ronaldo, the Brazil striker, they think that football is "better
than sex".
The next most "passionate" supporters belong to Bolton Wanderers, of
whom 18 per cent would prefer to be in the stands than in the bedroom.
Thirteen per cent of Arsenal fans, 12 per cent of Liverpool fans, 10 per
cent of Newcastle United fans and 9 per cent of Manchester United fans
would choose football over sex.
On the South Coast, men are more circumspect about the game. Only 4 per
cent of Portsmouth fans and 2 per cent of Southampton fans would forgo
sex for their club. "It´s frightening," Jenny Wilkes, a BBC West
Midlands presenter and president of the official Wolves supporters´ club,
said. "They´re obviously not sex-mad but there is room for both."
The survey of 1,000 male football fans for Teletext Sport found that
followers of the country´s top teams spend 76 hours a month, or 681 hours
a season, watching games. One in ten Premiership fans said they would
choose watching their team over having sex. One in four said that they
would rather watch football than spend time with their families.
Christine Northam, a Relate counsellor, said: "Any obsession is a big
problem. If every weekend for nine months it´s football, anybody is
going to get hacked off if they are not a fan. It´s a relationship
splitter."
Wolves supporters are the most obsessive, watching the the game for
1,263 hours a season. Of that, 489 hours are spent in the pub. Only Aston
Villa fans spend more time watching football at the bar. More than a
third of Wolves fans claim that their partners get angry about the time
they spend watching football.
Wolves supporters are known for their fanaticism. Molineux regularly
hosts weddings, with some brides wearing home colours in the form of gold
dresses and black garters. Sir Jack Hayward, the chairman, scheduled a
triple bypass operation in 1998 between the FA Cup victory over Leeds
United in the quarter-finals and the semi-final against Arsenal.
But promotion to the Premiership after 19 years of exclusion from
football´s top table has pushed this obsession to the limits. James Allen,
the sports editor of Teletext, said: "The anticipation of being back in
the top flight has something to do with it. It seems absence makes the
heart grow fonder - but not for their wives. Given a straight choice, I
was rather taken aback by the statistic."
Hours fans spent watching football last season
Top three: Wolves 1,263
Aston Villa 1,009
Everton 904
Bottom three: Fulham 435
Southampton 368
Portsmouth 142
Fans who would rather watch their team than make love with their
partner
Top three: Wolves 40
Bolton 18
Man City 16
Bottom three: Everton 4
Portsmouth 4
Southampton 2
Fans who feel depressed if they are stopped from watching their team
Top three: Wolves 86
Bolton 71
Newcastle 60
Bottom three: Fulham 35
Middlesbrough 30
Portsmouth 30
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Take care,
PK

For those who are wondering

1. Woverhampton is one of the most depressing post-industrial s**t holes in the Universe. The accent of someone from that part of the Midlands is a byword for idiocy..so much so that TV advertisers use it as a shortcut to suggest stupidity. I always think of it when I see pictures of Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

2. I´m one of the 84% of City fans, rather than the 16%.

Dave:

I´m in the 90 percent of Newcastle supporters, too. Not one of the 10 percent who prefer footie to nookie.

Plus, that´s what VCR´s are for. Live fun in the rack, followed by a taped footie match!

Out,
