It's 30 years later; the empire is defeated but exists as a more radical group and threatens to take over again.

Luke is in hiding, having become very powerful and fearful that he could be manipulated into causing 'bad' things. As with Luke and Leah in the original trilogy, other members of the Skywalker family could be equally dangerous and/or powerful. Luke knows it's not safe, because it turns out there was another Sith waiting in the wings behind the emporer.

Which is why when Han & Leah have twins, they follow the same path and separate the two to protect them from both war and the possibility of being used for their force powers.

Unfortunately, one of the twins discovers his heritage early on (possibly at the hands of the hidden Sith) and because of his experiences growing up, comes to worship his grandfather (Vader) and wants to 'finish what he started'. This is Kylo Ren.

His twin sister, Rey, has a much simpler existence until a random crash by a defecting storm trooper (Finn) pulls her into his escape. He's defecting because he learned the truth about Vader and Luke etc. and suddenly the story he was taught about Luke being an evil agent who destroyed the peace that the was creating isn't true.

Rey knows her father (Han) either as a person or actually that he's her father. He confirms the stories and her role. They set out together to find Luke, and Han is killed.

Luke surfaces to protect them and fights. More to come.

i do hope the empire comes back and wins. It's time hollywood let the bad guy win. When was the last time a hollywood movie let the bad guy win? Correct : Empire strikes back. And it was awesome!
