DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!

Post by Jackdog »

For any boxing fans here, this should be a damn good fight. Pavlik was beaten by Taylor when they were amateur's. It could have went either way. Pavlik was 17 and Taylor was 22. Pavlik was a kid then. He's a man now. I thinks he beats Taylor Saturday night.

I have seen Pavlik fight more than a few times but his last 2 wins over Jose Luis Zertuche and Edison Miranda were something special. Both fights were slugfests. Pavlik backed up both Zertuche and Miranda during their fights,he'll try to do the same to Taylor.

Since beating Hopkins,Taylor has looked like crap in his last 3 fights. Winky Wright fought him to a draw. Kassim Ouma and Cory Spinks pushed him around the ring all night. If Spinks can push Taylor around, Pavlik will knock him on his ass. Taylor looks like he has lost his focus and Pavlik is a very hungry fighter. Taylor will throw his left jab and Pavlik will walk right through it. Taylor does not want to brawl with Pavlik and that's exactly what he's going to get.IMO that spells defeat for Taylor.

A very good Welterweight fight starts the night off. Berto vs Estrada. Great match up!! Two good fights to watch and not drop big PPV coin. I am looking forward to it.

I'm all over this fight, Jackdog, either live at my brother's on HBO or on the torrents Sunday. Thanks for the reminder!

Other dates to circle:

Oct. 8: Pacquiao vs. Barrera

Nov. 3: Calzaghe vs. Kessler (I'm picking Calzaghe.)

Nov. 10: Cotto vs. Mosley (Wow, what a great f*cking fight this could be. Cotto really impressed me against Judah, but Mosley is a smart, cagey fighter.)

Dec. 8: Mayweather vs. Hatton (Mayweather's speed and dancing will be too much for Hatton, unfortunately.)

Bummer that Maskaev pulled out of his fight with Peter scheduled for Oct. 6 at MSG. That would have been a good fight.

Take care,
PK

Really good cards coming up. Cotto vs Mosley is on my radar big time. Cotto won me over in his fight aginist Judah. I really would like to see him do well against Mosley. Should be fun to watch.

I'll be tuning in since Pavlik hails from my hometown of Youngstown,Ohio.
Haven't seen him fight before. Jackdog...is he simular to that other big time fighter out of Ytown a few years back...Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini?
Not a whole lot of defense from Ray, but his fights were enertaining. He was never the same after the Korean fighter died after thier bout.

Full credit to Sugar Shane Mosley for admitting that he used "The Clear" and "The Cream" from BALCO for a few weeks earlier this decade. Now I'm not sure if he's honest when he says he had no idea what they were, but at least he's not ducking the truth like Bonds.

Man, Cotto-Mosley is going to be a GREAT fight. Can't wait.

Go Pavlik tomorrow night. Come on, Kelly!

Here's a good story about how Pavlik trains for all of his fights in Youngstown, refusing to go to high-profile spots like Vegas:

I think he has more power than Ray. He's taller and has that Tommy Herns type of right hand. Man I loved watching Ray fight. Your right, the Kim fight stuck in his head and he was never the same.

Great call Jack...

Pavlik was on Friday Night Fights a few months ago and exhibited a level headed approach to the sport - it was refreshing. He came across as a bright guy.

Regarding Taylor looking bad in his last few fights, can you blame him? Spink's is as slippery as they come and Wright is a nightmare for anyone.

I suppose I'm pulling for Pavlik but I respect Taylor - especially for taking this fight. Let's face it, after watching Pavlik destroy the sturdy Edison Miranda it took guts for Taylor to take this fight. Kudos to the champ...

No doubt man. Don't get me wrong,I like Taylor. He's got great skills and he's in the Kronk camp. Being from Detroit I love Kronk fighters. Manny will grt the best out of Taylor tonight. I see both fighters hitting the canvas before it's over. But I can't help pulling for Pavlik. I really like the kid. Can't wait!!!

This was one of the best middle weight title fights I've ever seen. How special is it to see a guy that close to being KO'd come back to win via knockout? Truly special stuff...

Now we need to see what happens in the Calzaghe/Kessler fight.

Like PK posted. We have some really great cards coming down the pike. These kind of fights will help boxing get back to where it needs to be.

Tonight we saw 2 great fights and as a fan of Boxing, I go to bed happy. :D

PS. I look forward to more Boxing thread's. I love the fact we have some fans here.

I completely disagree after watching tonight. That first match was boring as hell. The Pavlik/Taylor match was entertaining but I've seen at least 10 more entertaining UFC fights in the past 6 months easily.

But I digress, it doesn't matter what type of fighting you're watching, when you see a guy go from down-and-out to knocking the other guy out you've seen something special. Thanks for the heads up Jack I'm glad I was able to see the Taylor/Pavlik fight.

As a huge fan of boxing I enjoyed the hell out of last night. I disagree with your take on the first fight, but I am glad you enjoyed the Pavlik win.

Boxing vs UFC? I saw tjung's post and was hoping this thread wouldn't go there. Why did you bite Scoop?

Here is my take. When I had both legs I did the UFC thing every weekend until bail money ran out. Bar's and NCO clubs were my Octogon. No holds barred fighting. MMA. For boxing fans, it can be painful. Kinda like watching Michael Jordan play baseball, or Willie Nelson being placed in duets with various rap artists. It's Brazilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling with a dash of thug.

I get nothing out of watching a guy choke out someone or hitting a man laying flat on his stomach in the back of the head while sitting on his back. It seems like human cockfighting to me. Call me old school I guess.

Here's my ignorant comparison:
Boxing=NFL
MMA/UFC=XFL

I found both fights to be very entertaining. I'm going to take this thread back.

"Pavlik did it," that's what I shouted when the fight was stopped. My wife, being an Ohio native (and out of the room at the time), was a boxing fan for the night. It just felt hard to believe that 5 rounds earlier, Pavlik had been down.

I credit both fighters for giving the fans a great fight. Heart and skill were definitely on display. I still can't get that image of Taylor crumbling to the canvas in the corner out of my head, like Apollo Creed at the end of Rocky II (though this wasn't a count, just Pavlik's onslaught). Also have to give credit to Kelly for knowing how to finish, wow! Those uppercuts were especially good.

Looking forward to the other great fights down the road...loving boxing again! Hold on, one of the things that I hate about boxing reared it's ugly head again last night...the scoring! I could have seen it being one point ahead (going into that round) for either guy, but a 3 or 4 point difference by all the judges?? wtf??!! At least Pavlik took care of business the old fashioned way...

I could drone on forever with reasons why I think boxing is far superior to MMA, but that's not what this thread is about.

I'll leave it at this: Competitors in both sports are great athletes and tough as hell, no question. I just prefer boxing. Always have. Always will.

Anyways, way to go Pavlik! What heart, what balls. Can't wait for Calzaghe-Kessler and Cotto-Mosley next month!

Take care,

Jack, I came in this thread to say that I enjoyed the Taylor/Pavlik fight. I only checked it out because you and Paul talk about how tactical it is and how it is so much better than MMA. It had been a while since I have watched a boxing match so I checked it out because I don't think it's fair to comment on a sport I hadn't seen in a while. I honestly was not going to say a word about MMA in this thread at all but you know I couldn't resist after tjung brought it up.

I used to feel the same way about MMA back in the day but it has definitely changed over the years. I thought it was boring at times too but they have eliminated that IMO. When is the last time you've even checked out a UFC fight? Judging by comments from you and Paul I'd venture to say you're talking out of your asses based upon a fight you may have seen 5 + years ago. They sure as hell don't let a fighter hit the back of another fighters head and they are also quick to stand them up if the guy in a dominant position isn't doing anything to improve it.

If you honestly think MMA is the equivalent of a human cockfight than you're completely ignorant to what MMA is all about. There are clearly defined rules that look out for the health and safety of the fighters. If you don't know what you're looking at I can see how it would appear that it is nothing but a street fight but if you took the time (and it doesn't really take much time) to actually understand the sport you would find fighting that has way more tactical action than any boxing match could ever hope to attain.

In the end I know you guys will never accept MMA as legitimate fighting and that's okay by me. All I ask is that we keep the whole MMA/Boxing thing out of these fighting threads. Nothing will turn me off discussing boxing faster than little pot shots at MMA every time. I know you and Paul were not the ones who brought it up but you two are the biggest proponents of boxing here. I spent a couple of hours out of my life to check out a sport the two of you have been going on and on about because I respect the two of you and sincerely wanted to view the sport through your excuberant eyes. I came into this thread last night to share my excitement from the Taylor/Pavlik fight only to be deflated by tjung's comments.

Can't we all just get along in these fight threads?
I am a patient boy.

Uh, no: My impressions were from UFC matchups on Spike this summer. Quite dull, as most of the fights were on the ground, with seemingly interminable amounts of time where one guy had his face in another guy's crotch or they were laying on top of each other while they tried to grapple or just rest.

And once they got to their feet and started to fight, the punching technique was primitive at best compared to a skilled boxer.

Maybe I caught a few bad nights. But I was unimpressed.
ScoopBrady wrote:In the end I know you guys will never accept MMA as legitimate fighting and that's okay by me. All I ask is that we keep the whole MMA/Boxing thing out of these fighting threads.
You're right, on both accounts. I'll never accept MMA as an equal to boxing, and we should keep snide remarks about other people's favorite types of fighting sports out of their respective threads.

If it's a thread about boxing, then let's talk about boxing. If it's a thread about MMA, let's talk about MMA. That should be a DSP forum rule, as this debate seems to be as divisive and fanboyish as the console wars! :)

I watched it on Spike last week. UFC Fight Night and The Ultimate Fighter series on Wednesday Nights. Mac Danzig is the son of a friend I served with in the Army. I've watched "Tapout" on Versus and "WEC". On FSN I've watched the IFL a few times the past month. So no I am not talking out of my ass. And yes I have seen guys get hit while on their stomach in the back of the head. The ref did stand them up, but I did see it. I have tried to stay interested but I just don't care for anymore.

The sport isn't new Todd. I hold a 8th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I wasn't joking when I said I fought in Bars and NCO clubs. I fought "No holds barred fights" until the Army started taking rank from those of us that did it. It was big in Germany back in the 80's. I made some good coin in Geman bars fighting fellow soldiers and civilians. I also boxed from the age of 9 to 38.

I like boxing much better. I have trained my son in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,but I love the fact he decided to become a boxer. Different strokes brother.

I was runner up in a tough man a few years back... lost a split decision. For months friends and strangers alike would approach me and claim I was robbed. Personally I thought it was very close.

If I throw the fight up on youtube would you guys watch it and let me know who you thought won? I'm looking for an unbiased view of the fight as I'm thinking of fighting one more time.
