Financial Insanity?

Post by Breadman-HagerstownGoldSx »

Some of the extensions signed this summer are astounding. $27 million for ANY player is a huge commitment. $10+ million for a setup man. Am I missing a coming financial windfall that everyone else sees?

$10 million for a setup man?

I did sign someone for $27m, but (in my estimation) he's one of the top-ten hitters in the league, with no history of injuries, at a position where I was weak, and I had money available.

It could be that teams with budget room are spending (like me). Or something else, I don't know. But I think that $105-110m is still about the maximum break-even salary (assuming a solid team that performs well behind it).

Teams that spend that much are simply taking a risk which may or may not pay off.

It only takes one high payroll/poor result season to be Mobile or Juno. And that is a tough hole to get out of.

Which is why I'm not resigning Ybarra to an extension. I'm going to let him test the FA waters where he'll find he's not going to make $10M, much less $20M, per year.

I have insane extension demands from my team. This is not going to be a pretty offseason. Maybe I'll actually be able to spend some small amount of money on FAs this time around...

Well, Ybarra's making a case for himself. Talk about a walk year surge. From .233/15 to now .280/38. 8O
