Guinness Stout - There is no substiture!
Schlafly Hefeweizen
Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat
Harp - Black and Tan's rule!
Newcastle on tap (avoid the nasty clear bottles!)
I would also nominate the Free State Brewery in Lawrence, KS as one of the best brew pubs around. It sets the standard. As a bonus, their lawyers had to push for a law allowing them to open in Kansas, and somehow became the only place in the entire state that can sell alcohol to go on Sundays.

I have to say my favorite beer is the Pilsner Urquell. But I don't really consider Guinness a beer, so that's in its own area.
Otherwise it's usually the darker the better, less sweet more bitter. I avoid Budweiser like the plague, but like me a good Miller High Life or a big Heineken for the bus ride to the Metros games.
PK, you mention SN Porter. You ever try Catamount Porter? That's the one beer Catamount makes that I'm sorry I can't get down here in the City.

Great thread...my favorite is one most of you haven't heard of - Yuengling Lager. Its America's oldest brewery (1829, located here in eastern PA) and the brewery is like 10 minutes from where I sit
http://www.yuengling.com/
They did a spot about the brewery on the History Channel a few years back when they were documenting the history of American Beer. The producer of the show fell in love with Yuengling Black and Tan (also awesome). I have toured the brewery several times (once for college credit ) I even got a chance to see the caves under the brewery where the beer was stored pre refridgeration. I have met Dick Yuengling a few times myself. Might sound like nothing to you guys but he is a celeb around here
As for my other favorites: Moosehead and Molsen.
EDIT: I see FSquid has it on his list...atta baby!

The Red Lion Tavern in Lawrence, KS keeps Guiness on tap, but in its own cooler, where it is kept warmer (55 °F) than the rest of the beers. Only the fools complain.
This is a guy that knows how to live!

Agreed. Enjoyed the brew there at least once per year from 1993-97 when I worked for NHRA and worked the drag races at Heartland Park Topeka. Excellent spot for a good beer.Jayhawker wrote:I would also nominate the Free State Brewery in Lawrence, KS as one of the best brew pubs around. It sets the standard.

A Bass & Guinness Black & Tan might be my favorite.
I can second Diablo's Yuengling comments. Great beer but not common outside of the Northeast.
I like the occassional Sam Adams seasonal beer. Oktoberfest wasn't bad.
Another I've come to really like is Murphy's Irish Stout sold in 4 packs of cans: http://store1.yimg.com/I/beergeek_1868_10581049

I moved from Lawrence to St. Louis in '98. We may have been drinking together. I had several friends that worked there. Hope you got to have a meal as well. Great menu!pk500 wrote:Agreed. If you make it back to Lawrence, you should stop by the Red Lyon Tavern at the opposite end of Mass St. They have Newcastle on tap there, as well as Guiness. It's also the best group of people in town to drink with, employees and regulars. No drink specials, no food. Real dartboards and steel tip darts. Great jukebox and free wifi to boot.
Of course I'm violating the first rule of the Lyon:
"Please don't tell anyone about the Lyon. We have no time for strangers. Remember, it's your seat."

Beers I regularly drink:
Alexander Keith's
Rickard's Red
Guinness
Sleeman's Honey
Moosehead
Corona (in summertime on deck by the pool, I find it too watery and having to put lime in a beer is ridiculous to me)
Newcastle
If you want to shotgun try a couple of these dandies (they'll put you on your ass in no time and taste absolutely terrible!):
Faxe
Crest
