OT: Movie rental suggestions

Post by sportdan30 »

Last week, I watched Ladder 49 and Finding Neverland. Both very good movies, so I'm hoping to go three for three.

I was thinking of Super Size Me or perhaps Spanglish as I'm a big Adam Sandler fan. But I've heard from people that Spanglish wasn't too good.

Any opinions or suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks.

Either I'm having bad luck with the movies I'm renting or my DVD player is nearing the end of it's run. Without fail, the movie will freeze revert back to an earlier scene or it'll forward to another scene in the movie. This happens on 90% of my rentals.

Any tips on maintenance or should I up and purchase a new DVD player?

If you can find a good site you can download firmware updates (I did for my Panasonic). These are basically what companies do to thier "new" models.

You can usually find an ISO and make a dvd that it reads and upgrades your unit.

Either that or your unit took a dump :D .

If you're frequent renter, you know that most DVD's come back dirty & filthy with finger prints, kids dropped soda etc. I doubt the shops do a cleanup of the disc, a good one anyway. New DVD players are very cheap now, including names like Sony, Panasonic, etc.

Have you seen: Day after Tomorrow, Ray, Manchurian Candidate, Aviator?

Super Size Me is a good documentary, but it is still a documentary so it can be abit dry (at times). I was getting pretty disgusted by McDonalds food toward the end of the movie, so try to watch it at least a few hours before/after you eat.

I don't know much about Spanglish....

Yeah, I think I'll browse through Best Buy and CC this weekend and see if I can purchase a new DVD player on the cheap. Might try Lauren's suggestion first if I don't get around to getting to the stores.

Haven't seen Day After Tomorrow. I have seen the other three you mentined. I actually watched Ray and the Aviator a couple weeks back when the wife was of town. Not her kind of movies. I enjoyed Ray more than The Aviator. I just wasn't that enamored with Leonardo in that role. It was decent, not great IMO.

Why not try a classic like Inherit the Wind with Spence Tracey or On the Waterfront with Marlon Brando? I'm starting up a classic movie club this summer with a bunch of friends. Others we're going to watch/re-watch are Dr. Strangelove, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the GodFather.

Best wishes,

Doug

If you want a good baseball movie the whole family can see try to rent FREQUENCY(2000). It's a good fun movie and very under-rated when it comes to baseball flicks.

I've seen "On the Waterfront". A few years back, my dad sat me down on the couch and made me watch it. Surprisingly, it was very good. He also recommended I watch "Bridge on the River Kwai" which was also good, but doesn't hold up to today's action and drama.

Thanks for the suggestion. Might see if that one is available.

Spanglish was okay at best. It's not really an "Adam Sandler movie" so much as Adam Sandler just happens to be in it. It has it's moments but it's way more serious than I expected. I'd recommend watching Super Size Me. I really liked it a lot, though it is kind of disgusting at times. If you like documentaries, Spellbound is really good. It's about the National Spelling Bee and follows a bunch of kids who get to the finals. Friday Night Lights is also good, and one I didn't expect to like as much as I did was Hellboy.

Forgot about Spellbound. I've heard good things about that too. Anyone ever see "Best in Show"? It's resembles a documentary about dog shows, the people are actors. Still pretty hilarious.

Something I avoided because I pretty much avoid all things dicaprio but turned out to be a great rental was the movie "Catch me if you can." Its a Spielburg flic that flew below my radar that was just really well put together and a great story loosely based on a true story.

Saw it in the theaters, and I agree it was excellent. One of those movies that captivates you from the beginning to the end.

Frequency isn't really a baseball movie although it does refer to the 1969 Mets. I love that movie though...great flick. It's a suspense/serial killer flick

After what you said Tim, I remember that movie! It was terrific. Didn't it have Kurt Russell in it?

No Kurt Russell....it stars Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. It's really a movie you should watch with your dad. I would have given anything to watch that movie with my dad.

Try Casino with DeNiro if you haven't seen it. Great flick and the 10th anniversary edition just came out this week.

Oh and for a fantastic movie that the whole family can enjoy, try Racing Stripes. It's funny, sad, and has a great story and will leave you feeling good in the end. I can't recommend it enough.

Hotel Rwanda and The Aviator were both very good as well.

If you like to watch some of the tv series' you might have missed Deadwood and Carnivale have released both of their season ones and both are excellent.

And if you've never seen it, you owe it to yourself to rent the entire 6 disc series of Band of Brothers. Simply put, one of the best and most moving dvd sets I've ever seen.

I'm a dvd nut so I could go on all day...but I won't.

Sport, if you liked Best in Show, there are a few other movies in the same style made by the same people you'd like. There's Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, and my personal favorite, This is Spinal Tap. Truly hysterical movies.

My vote for movie to watch with your dad would be Big Fish. I really loved that movie. Great story, and a lot of fun.

Well, just in case anyone was wondering I did rent "Supersize Me" and "Meet the Fockers". "Supersize Me" truly had a profound impact on my diet and lifestyle. Even before I watched the documentary, I ceased ordering fries. It hasn't been easy, but I'm going to see how long I can go without them. Superb film. They really oughta make this mandatory to watch in high school. I'm just amazed at the cr*p all these kids eat at lunch.

"Meet the Fockers" was dreadful IMO. I couldn't even watch it all. "Meet the Parents" was a classic compared to this movie. I know some of my friends enjoyed it, so that is one of the reasons I decided to rent it. Plus, I like the original. I just did not think the humor was anything special. Seemed rehashed. What's funny is that my friend who like this movie despised "Napolean Dynamite" which I loved! We couldn't be more different when it came to these two movies.

Just curious if anyone has seen "Troy" or "The Alamo"? If so, which one would you recommend?

Thanks.
