Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Wanted to recommend a few good movies I've seen on the cable pay channels that are running recently.
1.John Carter - I know this was a huge bomb at the box office last summer mainly because they overhyped it as the next star wars mixed indiana jones. I even remember when seeing the promo's for it last year that the name of the movie was pretty awful.
But I just saw it on STARZ a few nights ago and it was a really good/fun movie. My son even watched it as he's sort of into the planets/science now at this age. Really good story, based on the books by the same author in the early 1900s who wrote Jurassic Park, Tarzan, etc.. I liked the historical angle where it' starts out set in the 1880s with civil war vets.......well....just see it, its really good.
2.The Woman in Black - this is playing on Showtime and the star is the guy who plays Harry Potter. This move is an old fashioned English type ghost story and scared the crap out of me. It's not the modern American blood and gore type of horror, but old fashioned scary story using a few simple but effective special effects.
I think these movies are also on Netflix too.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
I've rented a few movies in the past couple weeks.
Argo - Probably my favorite of the four I've seen recently. Even though you know what's going to happen, it was still very tense. 7.5/10
Zero Dark Thirty - Watched this with great interest, and found it to be quite informative and intriguing. Movie is a bit slow, but but gripping if that makes sense. 7/10
Perks of a Wallflower - Enjoyed this movie, but probably would have liked it better if I was younger. Great cast of characters, however acting felt a little forced at times. 7.5/10
007 Skyfall - Found myself bored within 10 minutes of watching this movie. Watch it to the end, but nothing memorable about this would make me watch it again if I saw it on tv. I haven't enjoyed a James Bond film since Casino Royale. 5/10
Next up...... Lincoln and Life of Pi

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Saw some movies while on vacation....
Wreck It Ralph....I enjoyed this movie. Thought it was well done and clever. It helped I grew up playing video games. Also, John C. Reilly is one of my favorites.
Ted....Was really looking forward to this one but came away quite disappointed. Had some funny parts but being a Family Guy fan, was expecting more.
Silver Linings Playbook.....Initially I wasn't sure how I felt after leaving the theatre but the more I thought about it the more I liked it. Looking at Jennifer Lawrence for two hours didn't hurt either.
Pitch Perfect.....My daughters friend brought this with her (16 yrs old) and they over ruled me. It didn't stink but not my kind of movie. I do like Anna Kendrick though.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Agree about Wreck It Ralph. Great movie for kids and adults. Loved the videogame nostalgia in te movie. Was cool how they took a 2d 80s game and made it have that 3d effect behind the screen.
Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
I was surprised how much I liked Pitch Perfect. Nothing incredible by any stretch, but I found it pretty funny.
I really enjoyed Skyfall. I liked that they had a Bond villain more bent on personal revenge than taking over the world or pulling off a massive robbery.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
I was shocked by how little I enjoyed Skyfall. I'm a huge Bond fan, even reading many of the non-Fleming books years ago. My criticism boils down to one personal but absolute conclusion:Brando70 wrote: I really enjoyed Skyfall. I do not want any Batman in my James Bond.
Yes there's always been a dark streak in the character, but this turned movie turned the naval-gazing and brooding up way beyond acceptable levels. I'm not saying I want to go full Roger Moore here, but there should be just the hint of that guy in the character; Something a hell of a lot less Don Draper and a hell of a lot more fun.
If it weren't for Javier Bardem the entire thing would have been tedious beyond belief. Even with him this flick wasn't better than the last Mission Impossible, which is a sad state of affairs.

Well probably late to the party but I was surprised by the Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo.
So much that almost tempted to get the Blu-Rays of the Swedish mini series, which are kind of steep at Amazon.

I really enjoyed Skyfall but I saw it in the theater. It's one if those movies made for the big screen. The visuals were stunning especially the scene he sails into Macua. I like DC as bond becuse he's no nonsense real life kind if spy. His bond movies aren't the same campy 007 scripts like in the past with unrealistic villains and super gadgets. Sort of like dalton bond who I also enjoyed. Dalton/Craig portray the character like in the Fleming books.

The Swedish Trilogy is fantastic enjoyed it way more than the remake. I didnt know it was a trilogy until netflix suggested another movie. It said Trilogy but it was weird how they didnt group them together.wco81 wrote:Well probably late to the party but I was surprised by the Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo.

'Fat Amy' killed me, she was great.Brando70 wrote:I was surprised how much I liked Pitch Perfect. Nothing incredible by any stretch, but I found it pretty funny.
Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
I liked the personal stakes a lot more, and the idea of bond changing with the times and the aging process. At this point, the Connery/Moore smirking has been done, and I feel that the Dalton/Brosnan stretch were the worst period for the films, a lot of noise without much else. Skyfall could have used some editing (just about every movie could these days), but overall I found myself more invested in the characters than perhaps any Bond movie ever.RobVarak wrote:I was shocked by how little I enjoyed Skyfall. The irony is that I don't like the Dark Knight movies.
Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Saw these two on airplanes in the last month. Silver Linings it a good movie, but I don't get all the Oscar fawning about it. Then again, I'm not a movie critic.Silver Linings Playbook.....Initially I wasn't sure how I felt after leaving the theatre but the more I thought about it the more I liked it. Pitch Perfect is for teens I guess. I want to bang Brittany Snow and Anna Kendrick goes from staring with Cloony to this?

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Rented "This is 40" this past weekend. Possibly one of the worst movie rentals I've seen, besides maybe Hot Tub Time Machine. This movie had a few funny parts, a great cast, but the writing was atrocious. It could have been so much better given the story line. I seriously think the writers had trouble deciding whether to make the movie a comedy or a drama. Worse, it never ended....it just dragged on and on. Worse yet, I forgot to return it the next day and had to pay an extra $1.30 for that piece of crap!
Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Just watched Knuckleball on netflix and noticed it's on a cable channel as well. Great documentary. Grew up a Rangers fan and always looked forward to Charlie Hough getting on the mound. This is a well done movie with a ton of face time with Dickey and Wakefield.
Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
This isn't a rental suggestion but I didn't want to create a new thread. Just watched this trailer for GRAVITY. Holy hell!

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Look, I don't know if anyone even buys DVD's anymore, and most of us probably have at least 3 of these in multiple formats, but this was on sale at Target for $8. $8!!!!
This might be the greatest value in the history of American entertainment.

Rented the Way Way Back and Man on a Ledge for this long weekend. Looking forward to watch them on the PS4.
Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
On my recent flight back home, I watched a movie that I haven't heard of at all and it had enough twists and turns that kept me glued to the story: "Now you See Me"

Just watched it last night . Thought it was brilliant. Im guessing your life didnt resemble theirs if you didnt like it.sportdan30 wrote:Rented "This is 40" this past weekend. Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Of the three movies I've watched in the last few weeks, I most enjoyed The Way Way Back. A definite recommendation. Great cast and I guess I'm a sucker for coming of age movies.
Trouble With The Curve was decent. I went in to it knowing it had received luke warm reviews, and it kind of surprised me. What can I say, I love Clint Eastwood.
Tonight, I just finished watching The World's End. Half way through, I had to pause and ask myself if I was seriously tripping......the first half of the movie was quite
enjoyable and hilarious, but then it just got way *****d up!! It was still entertaining, but wow......I did not see the movie going in that direction at all!
Very much looking forward to renting The Prisoners. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about this movie.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Saw Lone Survivor over the weekend. It's a tremendous movie. Gripping from beginning to end. Great performances, particularly by Wahlberg who astutely gets out of the way and calls no particular attention to himself or his performance, and the direction, cinematography and editing are all top-notch. Can't recommend it strongly enough.
That said, it was a pretty emotionally draining experience. I knew as I was watching it that it was clearly Hollywood-ed up for added drama, but nevertheless it is a brutal and exhausting movie to watch. My wife and I were both just wrecked by the end.
I knew the broad outlines of the story from the reporting at the time and especially the media coverage of Lt. Murphy's CMOH. I also caught a few minutes of a joint interview with the cast and the wives of the deceased SEAL's. There are clearly some things in the movie that are ginned up. I knew, for instance, that the sheer number of casualties inflicted by the Americans in the movie was absolutely implausible, and even mentioned this during the movie. There is an enormous coincidence of timing at the conclusion of the movie that, as it turns out, was also fabricated.
Let me be clear about this. I have no problem with any of the above and it in no way detracted from the cinematic experience. Nor does it bother me now as I look back at the film.
However, some additional reading on my part has educated me on the exaggerations and inaccuracies of Luttrell's book and of the movie. There's been a pretty significant debate about the details of the operation that led to this disaster, and (finally getting to the point of my post), I strongly, strongly recommend that anyone interested pursue some additional enlightenment. It's worth it.
Much of the post-mortem debate is typical inter-service nonsense, with Marines (as, in my experience, is their wont) getting their dander up about being underrepresented and overly blamed for their role in the op. But there are important lessons about the Afghan theater to be learned from the more important discrepancies and disputes, so it's worth a few minutes to check around the web to draw your own conclusions.
In any event, go see the flick. It's amazing!
