My most anticipated sports event this weekend
I'm excited about the march to the Final Four this weekend and will record/watch, but I must admit that with Syracuse out of March Madness, this has become my most anticipated sporting event of the Easter weekend:
1 p.m. (EST) Sunday, ESPN2: USA vs. Mexico at Azteca Stadium, Mexico City, men's World Cup qualifier
This is a MONSTER match between bitter archrivals at one of the most hostile stadiums in the Western Hemisphere, if not the world.
I'm already jacked up for this one. Go USA!
Take care,
PK
P.S.: I'm going to keep the DVR rolling on ESPN Classic later that afternoon, as the channel is showing a two-hour highlights show from the 1982 Indy 500 -- a classic race in which Mears fell just short of catching Johncock -- at 5 p.m.

Definately, this match should be a beauty. Im actually kind of mad that the match happened to be this week because there is an MLS game between FC Dallas & I think LA two days before, here in Austin, and Eddie Johnson won't be playing becuase of the qualifier. Also the Wednesday after that we have Guatemala.

Yes, 1 p.m. EST. Sometimes I forget the world doesn't revolve around the East Coast.
I updated my original post. Thanks for the tip.
Take care,
PK

The atmosphere should be incredible. I've been to Estadio Azteca, and it's probably the loudest, and definitely the biggest stadium I've ever been in. We've never won at Azteca...but Mexico hasn't defeated us in the last 6 matches (including a tie at Azteca in WC qualifying for 2002). A tie would be great for us...and a win would be historic. Should be fun.

My most anticipated event is the $6-million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) on Saturday at Nad al Sheba racecourse in Dubai. Roses in May vs the world.
The field also includes multiple Grade 3 winner Dynever; 2004 South African Horse of the Year and champion older horse Yard-Arm; Grade 2 winner Ruler’s Court; and Chiquitin, an Argentine-bred who enters off a victory in the Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (UAE-G2) on March 5 at Nad al Sheba. Roses in May, however, winner of last year’s Whitney Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, has emerged as the horse to beat despite finishing second in two most recent starts.

I was disappointed in pk's lack of mention of the TPC at Sawgrass as well. I'm really hoping that NBC broadcasts this tournament in Hi Definition. No golf tournies this year on CBS, NBC, or ABC have been in hi def. Not sure if the opening rounds in Hawaii on ESPN were HD or not.lexbur wrote:Here I thought this thread was going to be about the TPC at Sawgrass. I should have known it would be about soccer.
I must be getting old, I'm looking forward to watching golf.
If not, only 2 more weeks until The Masters, and that certainly will be in HD. I'd expect CBS to broadcast all the other golf they air in HD after NCAA tournament is complete.

I for one am very pumped about what should be a great week of soccer for american fans. As PK said, huge mexico match on sunday, then there's the guatemala wcq on wednesday (which I will be at---my first qualifier and only second us men's game ever), and then the mls season kicks off on abc next saturday. Look for DC to put the beat down on chivas in that one. Good times my friends...

Sorry to disappoint you, but I could give three sh*ts about golf except for The Masters, U.S. Open and British Open. And I even only follow those on the periphery.AcemanPR wrote:I was disappointed in pk's lack of mention of the TPC at Sawgrass as well.
But I understand the appeal of golf for others. My father and brothers watch it all the time. I just don't care for it.
Take care,
PK

Cricket season starts soon, so I've got net practice Saturday.
England are playing a World Cup qualifier vs Northern Ireland at The Swamp, so traffic will be horrendous.
Can't think of anything else, offhand.

Ah, yes, the Steroid Spectacular otherwise known as Major League Baseball. Forgot about that.dbdynsty25 wrote:It needs to be April 5th...screw all this golf, soccer and racing sh*t. The main event starts in April and ends in October/November.
Baseball needs Opening Day more than ever. At least talk will be diverted temporarily away from steroids to the game on the field.
Take care,
PK

Well that really depends on how small guys have gotten in the offseason. Opening day could be a very very bad day for some superstars this season. Just ask that waif Giambi.pk500 wrote:Baseball needs Opening Day more than ever. At least talk will be diverted temporarily away from steroids to the game on the field.

For me it's the NCAA Tournament still, followed by the 5th major of golf (The TPC).
I admit that the NCAA Tournament could be much more exciting if a Syracuse or UConn would be left, or if Illinois was undefeated, but it's still March Madness and we are sure to see a buzzer beater this weekend, which the tournament has been lacking for two straight years.

No event that lasts 3/4s of the year can be exciting, except for the final conclusion. Baseball's season is too long with too many ups and downs. It's frankly too much. The NFL season's length is perfect, and the baseball playoffs still lack the excitement of "one and done" like the NFL and NCAA Tournament.dbdynsty25 wrote:It needs to be April 5th...screw all this golf, soccer and racing sh*t.
