NFL Predictions

Post by davet010 »

Well, preseason is over, and it´s time to dig out the crystal ball and predict who´s gonna pick up each division and advance to the Superbowl. So here´s my attempt

AFC - East. Pats. Jets lost Pennington, Bills secondary still looks iffy, and Miami won´t win it all with Fiedler or Capt. Overpaid.

AFC - North. Steelers. One year too early for my Bengals (but, gotta love the house clearing Marvin has done to date). Browns have gone with a career backup who hasn´t yet shown he can carry the load every week, and the Ravens are starting a rookie at QB. Lewis and the rest of the s***** in the Ravens defence won´t make up for that.

AFC - South. Titans. McNair can make things happen when it´s showtime...Peyton Manning obviously can´t, which goes to show that heredity does play a part in things. Texans are a couple of years off.

AFC - West. Chiefs. Raiders finally get too old, Chargers too brittle in defence and lost much of the veteran leadership, and I don´t believe that Jake Plummer is an upgrade. Well, maybe he would be over me, but not over Brian ´hey my dad was a famous QB´ Griese.

NFC - East. Giants. Developed offence to match good defence. Cowboys have little for the ´Big Tuna´ to work with (and he gets right on my tits), the Eagles seem to have been ´just about there´ for too long to sustain, and Washington have coaching by committee, where the GM has decided that 2 QBs is enough to get you through the season.

NFC - North. Packers. One last hurrah for BF and the crew, who´ve added some good defence. Lions will be better, but not by much, Vikes have too many showboats and not enough defence, and the Bears have Kordell Stewart..nuff said.

NFC - South. Bucs. Some good pickups, particularly at RB, and defensive starters have been replaced. Probably Sapp´s last season there as well. Falcons were getting a lot of picks until MV went out, but their DB´s are still iffy, and WRs not quite enough. Saints don´t deserve to win in their horrible uniforms, and the Panthers are starting Jeff Blake.

NFC - West. Rams. Done some work on their defence, and Sehorn is out, which will help them. Hate the 49ers (as a Bengal fan, so don´t look for any reasoning), Seahawks don´t seem to have developed an identity under Mike Holmgren, and the Cards will always be poor, because few skill players want to be there.

Superbowl Tennessee Titans v Tampa Bay

Now to bury this and dig it out in Jan (after I´ve put my bets on at the bookies).

PS - Bengal prediction....6-10 this year.

AFC East- What might be the toughest division in football. Strong run game and stellar defense, this is the year Miami shows us something.

AFC North- Cleveland. This is a total reach. While the Browns defense is suspect at best, they have some athletes there. And they are loaded to bear at the skill positions, especially WR. They may have the deepest group of WR´s in the league, and Holcomb looks like he´s good to go.

I would normally have taken Pittsburgh, but their pass coverage is suspect at best, they have some questions at RB, and I think Maddox comes back to earth.

AFC South- Tennesee Best team in a soft division. They do however need to keep McNair healthy and Eddie George needs to return to form or they need another back to step up.

AFC West- Raiders. They looked horrible in the pre-season, but this is a veteran team, and I get the feeling the mailed it in for the pre-season. Chiefs and Chargers have too many questions on defense and Jake Plummer is not the answer in Denver.

NFC East- The Giants and Redskins are no where as good as some people think. Eagles run away with this division.

NFC North- Green Bay. Minnesota makes strides, but with Bennett out for a while and question marks at the WR position opposite Randy Moss, and a pourous defense they are still a year or 2 away.

NFC South- Tough division. Every team in this division is capable of making the playoffs. But until someone knocks them off Tampa is still the team to beat

NFC West- I am going to go against the grain and take the Niners. It´s a reach with Garcia´s questionable back, but I saw them play enough early to think they are still the class of the NFC West.

NFC East -- Eagles. New crib for a team that has as much talent as anyone in the NFC. That and I just can´t see Kerry Collins taking any team, no matter how talented to a division title.

NFC North -- Green Bay. Don´t see anyone between the Bears, Vikes and Lions who will be able to challenge the Cheeseheads in the Black and Blue.

NFC South -- Bucs are best of a very good bunch. The Saints are inconsistent but talented. Carolina could surprise this season and Atlanta could be right there if it can survice without Mike Vick.

NFC West -- I´m like BK. I like the Niners even with Garcia at less than 100 percent. The Rams have upgraded the defense, but I think the window is starting to close on their key weapons. Warner is already starting to show signs of being made of balsa wood.

Wildcards: New Orleans and Atlanta

NFC Champ: Eagles. Tampa is the trendy pick. But I think the Road to the Super Bowl is lined with peril for the defending champs.

AFC East -- My pick here is Buffalo. Greg Williams has built a team on the rise even with the loss of Peerless Price. The defense should be much better and the offense will be as dangerous as last season. Miami could be the team to beat if Fieldler can stay healthy. They are very average without him, and who knows if Griese is the answer.

AFC North -- Steelers? Bengals? Ravens? Browns? All of them have question marks. I was ready to pick the Steelers before Joey Porter´s shooting. Now? I think the Ravens win. All Boller needs to be is servicable. This team won a title with Trent Dilfer.

AFC South -- Titans. McNair is healthy for the first time, and he´s surrounded by a talented cast. Colts could challenge, but defense is still a question.

AFC West -- Broncos. Oakland is too old. San Diego may be too young. Kansas City is dependent on the hip of Priest Holmes.

Wildcards: Miami and Kansas City.

AFC Champ: Denver.

Super Bowl champ: Philadelphia
If Trent Dilfer can play QB for a Super Bowl winner, then I guess Jake Plummer can, too. But if there´s a more overrated starting QB in the NFL than Plummer now, name him.

Of course, Jeff George isn´t starting anywhere this season, right?

Call it East Coast bias, but I just don´t get why fans and teams are so enthralled with Plummer. Has done very little, and he had some receivers in Phoenix.

Oh PK and your East Coast bias. David Boston was Plummers only receiver and he´s known in Phoenix as the laziest man on earth. He cares more for his bodybuilding than he does his receiving. He runs poor routes and takes a lot of plays off. If you had read the Phoenix paper for the past 5 years like I have...you´d know that Plummer has had NO ONE to throw to. He tries to take it upon himself and force things. I think he´ll be a much better QB in Denver with proven playmakers (Portis, Sharpe, McCaffery, Smith and now Lelie). He won´t need to win every game by himself like he did in Phoenix.

As for the most overrated QB...Payton Manning...the guy gets all the props in the world, except that he hasn´t done a damn thing with arguably the best receiver in the game (Harrison) and a Faulk/James RB backing him up. How could he NOT win with those guys. Having watched him play in the AFC EAST for all those years I can´t imagine anyone getting as much press and doing so little.

Being a diehard Dolphins fan...Dan Marino comes to mind also. You can throw for all the yards in the world, but if you can´t win games...you aren´t s***.

I agree with you on Manning. The guy may have a computer for a brain, but his football instincts and "feel" for the game are suspect.

I still don´t believe in Plummer, one bit. I´ll be the first to eat crow if the guy has a good season, but I think he´s vastly overrated.

Oh, and you say Boston was the only target for Plummer. Don´t forget Frank Sanders, who is a very serviceable second wide receiver. Not a stud, but a solid player during his tenure in Arizona. And in ´98, early in Plummer´s career, mind you, he had Larry Centers as a receiver out of the backfield. Centers is one of the best receiving fullbacks in NFL history.

So to depict Plummer´s receiving corps as Boston or bust is a bit misleading. Not top-shelf pass catchers, but not total stiffs, either.

>>>Being a diehard Dolphins fan...Dan Marino comes to mind also. You can throw for all the yards in the world, but if you can´t win games...you aren´t s***.<<<

One of the silliest arguments in sport.

According to this theory, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly and Fran Tarkenton sucked and were overrated because they never won a Super Bowl yet Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson and Doug Williams are better because they have?

And I guess Timmy Smith is better than Barry Sanders because he had one magical Sunday in the late 1980s, running for 204 yards against Denver in the Super Bowl?

Come on. So Ray Bourque would have been a s*** defenseman if he didn´t whore his way to a Cup by being dealt to Colorado late in the season? Ernie Banks is a s*** player because he never won the World Series?

Last time I checked, the Dolphins hardly had any running game during Marino´s career in South Florida. That´s a key component of success, as you know.

If anything, and it pains me to say this as an ardent Bills´ fan, Kelly is more culpable for losses than Marino. Kelly had Thomas in the backfield for most of his career, so defenses couldn´t just key on the pass like they could against Miami.

Still, I don´t buy the argument one bit that careers are made and lost by the performance in championship games. It´s important, but football is a team sport, and Marino is far from the only individual to let down the Dolphins in painful defeats.
PK,

My arguement is one out of frustration rather than the actual concept. There´s no doubt in my mind that Marino is a better QB than Dilfer but what are careers measured by? Championships.

I also think that Marino was a better pure passer than Montana, but in most circles people will tell you that Montana was a better qb...why? Because he´s got a couple rings.

That´s my issue.
I agree on pure mechanics and passing about Marino over Montoya, but I think Joe Cool was a better leader and had better "feel" for the game than Dandy Dan.

Marino was the first to point fingers trotting to the sidelines after an interception or bad play. He sure as hell did it a lot in the early to mid-90s when Buffalo was smoking Miami´s ass.

Marino also put so much faith into his howitzer of an arm that he forced the ball into bad situations, at times. It also didn´t help that he was counted on to do so much for the Dolphins´ offense.

Had to bring up those early 90´s didn´t ya?

I agree...Marino definitely had to force things when the team around him wasn´t that great. That was pretty much the reason the Dolphins never really did anything in the playoffs. Montana definitely had a better surrounding cast, as did Jim Kelly...too bad they can´t win the big one eh? At least my Braves have a championship to go along with all of the failures.

Wow, a Marino-related argument and I haven´t chimed in yet? Where is the world going?

I can recommend a few good books to people regarding the Montana-Marino argument. One is by none other than Bill Walsh, who breaks down EXACTLY why it was that his 49ers beat the Dolphins in the Super Bowl, including his observation during pre-game warmups that "Shula had done it with mirrors" because the Dolphins players were smaller and not as physical as his guys.

As great as Montana was...Joe "cool" still had a team around him that Marino never did..and that´s the whole package, running game, great defense and a offensive scheme that, at the time, was fairly new to the NFL, and made good quarterbacks look great. Is it a coincidence that Young´s QB ratings rivaled Montana, and that Bono´s rivaled Young´s, and Grbac´s rivaled Bono´s, at least for periods of time? That´s not to say that the latter ones are better than the former ones, but the system is such that a quick 5 yard slant to Jerry Rice goes for 30 yards and the QB gets the same credit under the passer rating system that Marino would for hitting a guy 30 yards downfield.

Some of the best praise you´ll find for Dan Marino comes from none other than the guys who went up against him twice a year for a long time: Bruce Smith and Cornelius Bennett. "The Hidden Game of Football" and Peter King´s "Inside the Helmet" feature lots of good quotes from those guys, and it´s pretty clear who they thought was the best.

Anyway, as has been pointed out, Dan did more with less than most other QB´s except maybe John Elway, and Elway did at times have a great defense and even some 1000 yard rushers (he went to one of his Super Bowls with Bobby Humphreys, remember?). Still, were it not for Shanahan bringing in Terrell Davis, does anyone think that Elway retires with 2 rings right now, or does he join Kelly and Marino in the "losers circle".

It´s a team sport, and you have to be, what I would call, "super" in 2 of the 3 phases of the sport (passing/rushing/defense) in order to win the big one. I think that people who get what I would call "ring-struck" are missing the point that even the greatest individual is still only 1/22nd of the starters. Not like basketball or baseball with fewer players or a more linear style of gameplay that allows individuals to control the game.

So true ... what Marino could have done with Ricky Williams in the backfield and some of the recent Dolphins´ defenses.

Maybe the 1972 Dolphins wouldn´t pop the champagne corks as early in the season when their perfect record streak remains intact. Maybe they wouldn´t pop them at all.

Very good observations, Randy.

You know what´s sad - all those years Miami had a passing game, no running game and no defense, and couldn´t win it all. Last year they had a great defense, and the league´s leading rusher -- and sat at home.

Sigh. I swear I´m starting to think my team is cursed to be perpetually "moderately above average".

I was saying sketchy defense as of last year. I have not seen B-lo play this year with those guys you mentioned. They look good on paper...now does that always translate to a good team on the field? Hell no...hence the sketchy term. They were sketchy last year...and that´s what I go by...some sort of fact...not predicting how a team that picked up a couple of studs (Adams and Spikes).
That´s my only point bro.
When´s our ESPN online game?
The Bills´ defense wasn´t sketchy last year -- it was downright shitty!

I looked for you online tonight. I played Ghost Recon Island Thunder for 90 minutes tonight -- promised my cousin in Milwaukee a game, on ESPN release day of all days! -- and I checked my Friends list often to see if you were on. No luck. So I returned to ESPN NFL offline.

Yeah seriously man...it´s gotta be the time zone thing. I only saw HipE and Siam on when I was there for about an hour....oh well...we´ll get one in SOMEDAY.
So when you movin´ to the west coast? It´ll be a lot easier after you do that. LOL. Later bro.
