It´s not just PS2´s crapping out

Post by pk500 »

Hi all:

Web gaming forums are rife with stories of PS2´s breaking prematurely. Many of those forums also praise the build quality of the Xbox.

Well, I owned a PSX for three years and a PS2 for one and never had a problem. I bought an Xbox two months ago, and it broke Friday night. It would not read any discs, and all my discs are clean and scratch-free. I tried five of my eight games, with no luck.

Thankfully, I bought the unit at Wal-Mart, which has a 90-day return policy. I returned it last night, went to Electronics Boutique and bought another Xbox -- with the two-year extended warranty for $35.

I´m a huge opponent of extended service plans. I think they´re nothing but a money harvest for companies, which should build quality products from the start.

But to use a racing analogy, I´ve been burned once, so I´m wearing double-layer Nomex now.

I was so pissed that the Xbox broke that I seriously thought about returning to the PS2. But the Xbox has revived my passion for gaming, as I find it and its games much more enjoyable than the avalanche of software -- mostly s*** -- on the PS2.

So I figured I just got a lemon, bought another one with insurance and now am a happy gamer again.

Take care,
PK

I wonder if the stories of PS2´s dying more often than the X-Box have to do with people trying to modify PS2s to play foreign/copied games. Most "tricks" to allow playing foreign stuff, for instance, involves various bits of machinations with internal pieces of the PS2 that could break it, if done in the wrong hands.

Maybe that´s why...though I don´t know if the X-Box has a similar pirate scene. I haven´t heard of one though.

Jared:

Interesting theory. You´re right, there´s a very active mod squad for the PS2, while I´ve heard of hardly any modding for the Xbox.

But nearly all of the stories I´ve read about PS2´s breaking have been by owners of non-modded machines.

Hmm ... interesting. I´m just glad I have two years of insurance now on my Xbox!

Wow. Hmm.

I wonder about the ventilation of my unit. It´s on the bottom shelf of my TV console with about four inches on both sides and the back before the walls of the console and about 6 inches above. In other words, it´s not a tight squeeze like a stereo receiver in an AV rack. The console also has a fairly large hole in back for ventilation.

That console also housed my PSX, DC and PS2 when I owned those, and I never had any overheating problems. My basement is the coolest room in the house, so I don´t think air temperature is a problem. And there´s no way I can leave my unit in the open with a 3-year-old and 1-year-old roaming about the house.

Was your Xbox in the open or in a confined area? Just trying to find some kind of common denominator.
Hi guys!
First post here, I´m javiscript from the SR and OS forums.

Anyways I have a latest build PS2 and all I can say it´s that it´s damn quiet, especially compared to the PS2 I owned from last year. Blue disk read like a charm w/o any strange sounds. It came with the latest dvd drivers and I´m very happy with it.

Javi:

Welcome aboard! Glad your PS2 is working well. Maybe the latest build has more quality.

I know that my new Xbox -- built in May 2002 -- is a bit louder. Almost sounds like the cooling fan turns faster, which is good. Hopefully this console won´t fry, break or mutilate like my first Xbox.

I have the two-year buyer protection plan from EB, so I´m covered. I dig my Xbox too much to look back to the PS2.

Don´t be a stranger in here, brother!

Have owned both PS1 and 2.. My spindle wore out on my PS1 after about 3 years of heavy play and would only play certain games..

Only issue I´ve ever had w/my PS2 is playing some DVD´s. It´ll start to skip and then say cannot read disc. This can get very frustrating Aside from that its been perfect.

I bought my PS2 Last February (2001) and the only issue I have had with it is NCAA 2002 played very rough. Other then that no flaws whatsoever. On the DVD front the only one I had a problem with was a rental copy of Fast and the Furious. Other than that I havent had any issues with DVDs either.

Scarily I just cleaned it for the first time the other night cause I was beginning to wonder if some slowdown was due to dirtiness of the eye, but alas no change, just title slowness

Hope this helps anyone that is wondering. I never bothered to look as to when mine was created, if it is a big deal I will check it out just for GP.

I had a psx from day one and it finally puked towards the end of 2001. It started dying mid 2001 but I managed to get a few more months of life outta it by twisting it and playing it on its side or upside down

Anyways. Good to see ya posting again PK. Look forward to your rambles
