OT: Eustachy -- stay or go?

Man, I think Larry Eustachy is getting a raw deal at Iowa State.
 
 The man made a huge mistake -- no question. But he´s admitted he has a problem and is seeking help. He deserves a second chance, I think.
 
 But as Mark Kreidler wrote at ESPN.com, Eustachy can´t hit a mid-range jumper or get 10 rebounds per night. He´s expendable, even though there are seedier characters directing Division I basketball teams.
 
 Let´s face it: If Eustachy was a player, he would be pardoned by the school, stay on scholarship and return to the team after treatment. But as Kreidler wrote, since this is a business and keeping Larry Eustachy is bad business for ticket sales and recruiting, he will go.
 
 Too bad the ISU administration and local media live in glass houses.

 I have to disagree - he should go! He may have a drinking problem, and if that were the only problem, then I´d agree with you. However, the drinking problem didn´t *cause* him to go to a frat part and hit on college women. Plus, there are reports that this isn´t the first time this happened. I really question what his motivation was for being there, and I think that his attendance at such an event, at age 47, with a family, and a very public position of responsiblity and leadership, lead me to question his character.
 
 Public figures like Eustachy reap many rewards, including large salaries, because of their status. However, this is a double-edged sword, as their status can also work against them in a negative light. In this case, I have serious questions about his character, integrity, and judgment, and because of his public position and whom he represents, I think he should be removed from his duties. This is the type of man we want to help develop young mens´ lives? How can he have any credibility anymore? I wouldn´t send my kid there...

 He´s gotta go. How´s he going to tell his players to make good decisions and to follow his lead from now on? He can´t. The players are gonna do whatever the hell they want because he´s a bad role model in that case.

 I see your point, and for the most part, I agree about "live and let live." However, I would question the character of any 47 year old man with a wife and two kids that attended a frat party and was smooching with some co-eds.
 
 What´s wrong with holding people accountable, and why can´t we expect some integrity from our public figures and our so-called "leaders?"

 Then what about J.J. Redick, who supposedly was caught smoking weed or with weed at a campus party after Duke lost in the NCAA Tournament?
 
 He´s still on the team, as far as I know.

The only negative I can see is recruiting. Some parents probably would feel queasy about their kid being coached by Eustachy.
 
 Otherwise, how does this affect Eustachy´s ability to coach basketball unless he shows up at practice or games sh*tfaced?
 
 And yes, coaches are leaders. But they´re not the pillars and instructors of morality that we think. If anything, high school coaches have more of that effect, as you´re much more moldable and gullible in high school.
 
 My high school cross country and track coach is one of the three most influential men in my life, behind my father and a teacher of mine. My college coach was a dirtbag. But I didn´t fall off any moral precipice in college or lose my rudder because he was an unscrupulous dick.

I can see you point about the "pillar of society" thing...
 
 However, here is a quote from Terry Pluto (one of the top Sports Writers in the country, IMO) that just outlines the state of the ISU program:
 
 "In the past nine months, Iowa State has had three players arrested for public intoxication. Then a fourth player arrested for assault, and an assistant coach who had to resign because of child pornography charges."
 
 Not exactly the prototype for a successful, reputable, college basketball program. I´ll grant you that Eustachy didn´t do all of these things, but given his position, he is ACCOUNTABLE. Also, do you think his actions will damage his ability to help council the 4 players with problems? Absolutely...
