McGahee? Why?

Post by pk500 »

As a Bills´ fan since the early 1970s, I´m flabbergasted at the pick of Willis McGahee in the first round.

The kid shredded his knee. I don´t care how much he rehabs -- it won´t be the same as it was before the injury.

Two, the Bills obtained Olandis Gary, a former 1,000-yard rusher, from Denver during this offseason to back up Henry. So why another RB -- who could be damaged goods -- in the first round?

Three, does Bills´ GM Tom Donahoe really think the team has answered all of its defensive questions with its free-agent acquisitions? Yes, Spikes, Sam Adams and company are great pickups. But the Bills still lack a pass-rushing defensive end.

Finally, Larry Johnson was available. He ran for 2,000 yards last season and was healthy. If the Bills were desperate for a RB, then why not take Johnson?

I hope the Bills´ brass knows something about McGahee that us fans don´t. I´m sure they do. But the pick puzzles the hell out of me. Don´t like it.

BK and other football experts, please chime in.

Take care,
PK

i was shocked PK....i projected buffalo to draft troy palomalu usc before pittsburgh moved up to nab him (great move by them)

after that i told hip in chat i thought buffalo would go mike doss ohio st

last thing i saw coming was more offense particulary a running back

McGahee? Why?

Post by Neckthai »

The Bills weren´t going to land an elite d-lineman, especially after eight were taken prior to the Bills pick. So McGahee sits on the PUP list for a year while Henry and Gary play in 2003.

Pre-injury, McGahee stood to be one of the top five players in the draft. Could he be that same player? Maybe, maybe not.

If he comes back and is the back that he was at Miami, then Buffalo has the option of letting Henry go in free agency and getting a pick (like Peerless Price) in return. But Gary is also coming off an ACL tear, so you can´t be sure he´s the back that he was his rookie season in Denver. Maybe they are building a bionic pass rusher and are using parts

The Bills shocked me with that pick. I don´t undertstand it at all. Damon and I are watching the draft and we both think that was the surprise pick in the 1st round.

Damon thinks bad knee, hard turf, and cold weather is a bad mix for McGahee.

I could understand picking this kid up,but after that horrable knee injury, I would not have picked him in the 1st round.

Kajana Carter ring a bell? He never recovered from his first knee injury, and it was no where close to McGahee´s.

Bills were doing everything right until the 1st pick today. They did well with the free agents they signed. I hope I am wrong about this guy, only time will tell.

McGahee? Why?

This is the first time I´ve ever been able to see the draft live on TV in the UK..I kept dipping in and out but some picks were..interesting.

Bengals - first three picks look good to me, although I understand that Washington has some neck injury issues.

Bills - I´ve only seen very brief clips of that RB, but if he´s splattered both his ACL and PCL, he is not going to be making those crazy cutbacks. He was a Raider sort of pick, you know, if you had 2 picks in the 1st.

Packers - like the look of that LB. I remember talking to Jackdog after week 1 last year and saying that the linebackers were poor, so that looks OK

Only other odd one was Chris Simms to the Bucs. They interviewed Rich Mckay after round 2 , and he said that they didn´t pick Simms because they didn´t need him, then take him at the end of round 3 ??

It´s a bright, bengal-striped future for 03

[ This message was edited by: davet010 on 27-04-2003 04:04 ]

Cincy....Thanks brother its good to be back.

Dave ,your Bengals has had a good draft so far. I hope Palmer works out.Steinbach and Kelly are solid players.

Packers got a solid 1st round pick,Barnett is fast and hits like a truck. I hope he does better then Torrance Marshell. Peterson was a nice pick-up. He played well for the Buckeyes last year.

PK,the Bills rebounded nicely Kelsay and crowell are soild picks and both should help the defense.

I hate to say this, because they are my goofy little bro´s team, but the Lions did well. Rodgers and Bailey, wow.

I love Football, and I love watching the draft. I did some P/T today, but faked injury to watch the draft with my bro´s.

We had a blast, but my goofy little brother Damon had a little to much to drink and tried to talk a nurse into giving him a knobber, bad move at a VA hospital!

He was given the hook. We all blamed him for bringing the booze into my room. Its so fun to have a little brother

PK,she was no Daisy, but she was semi-hot in a nurse fantasy type of way. Thanks for the shout out brother.

Yep Damon is one of a kind! He woke me up at around 3am to give me some wings that I had been jonesin for. He snuck in and hung out with me while I chowed down on em. Roosters wings are the bomb!

He is back here now, watching Lakers vs Timberwolves. He is not allowed to drink today,so he´s raggin a bit
He says peace and go Wolves!

Didn´t McGahee looks really good in pre-draft workouts? I figure that the scouts saw that and thought he´d do well.

I don´t know if it was a good idea with a first round pick. But I don´t know how much farther he would have slipped if the Bills didn´t get him there. He´s got tremendous upside, and sometimes you´ve gotta take a risk.

Of course, I personally don´t want to see him do that well (being a Dolphin fan and all). So....great pick, Buffallo.

he may have looked good in workouts

but those workouts didnt simulate a willis making a quick cut on the interior of the line only to be gang tackled by juinor seau ,zack thomas ,and brock marion on the ice cold turf of buffalo

just something to consider

One other negative of the McGahee deal: He´ll consume first-round salary money off the cap and may not play this year. That will hinder the Bills´ ability to make more deals between now and the start of camp.

I read where the Bills may try to structure an incentive-laden deal over the long term with McGahee to protect themselves, hoping McGahee is sympathetic to a deal because the Bills took a chance on him. There may be some truth in that theory, but Drew Rosenhaus is McGahee´s agent. And that guy is an animal.

I don´t like the pick. Period.

PK,

You just wait. Miami has only upgraded the team with the addition of Junior Seau. One of the best defenses in the league just got better. That, plus Ricky, Chris Chambers, and an intelligent passing game, and the Dolphins have got a shot at winning it all next year.

(Of course, I was thinking the same thing in November.....ahem)

But hopefully the addition of Seau will bring some more leadership to the squad so that they don´t collapse at the end of the season.

Jared:

You just wait. One of the worst defenses in the NFL just got better with the addition of Sam Adams, Takeo Spikes, Jeff Posey and Izell Reese and the drafting of Chris Kelsay. Angelo Crowell could be a sleeper at linebacker.

Plus the Bills´ running game, which wasn´t half-bad last year, will be improved this year with the addition of tight end Mark Campbell and running back Olandis Gary and the return of fullback Sam Gash, a GREAT blocker.

So it´s not as if your beloved Fish are the only team to make improvements. In fact, I was underwhelmed by the Fish´s draft. But then again, I´m underwhelmed by anything that damn team does.

Yeah but Buffalo didn´t do as bad as the Cardinals, and they had 2 picks.
PK,

I believe that if you´re put on the physically unable to perform list, that money isn´t counted against the cap. I´m pretty sure that´s true. That´s why the risk is fairly small to the Bills bank account.

Stop talking s*** about the Dolphins too. They WILL win the AFC East this year...you´ll see.

You forget to mention that the Bills lost probably their most consistent receiver. All you´re left with is Moulds and that Josh Reed kid (is that his name)? Bledsoe can´t be at all happy about that.

DB:

Bledsoe may not be happy, but he knows the economic realities of the cap. Plus Price didn´t want to be in Buffalo, so who´s to say he wouldn´t have sulked and play like sh*t all year?

Moulds and Reed still are solid. And the Bills got Campbell, a solid TE to replace Reimersma.

The most underrated loss for the Bills from a receiving standpoint is Larry Centers, in my opinion. The guy arguably is the best receiving fullback in NFL history. He always was a good safety valve when primary receivers were covered and was a damn good primary receiver himself.

Still, Sam Gash is a much better blocker at fullback than Centers, so his return should please Henry and Olandis Gary. And maybe even McGahee, if he plays.
I´m terribly disapponted by this pick as I am a huge Travis Henry fan. So huge in fact, that Henry is my favorite player on the team and was really hoping to see him become the Bills franchise running back.

Unfortunately in this day and age, gone are the days of players staying on one team their entire career.

If Henry addresses his problems with holding onto the ball he can easily be a premier running back year after year. He´s that good.

The Bills, IMO, wasted their 1st round pick in a BIG WAY. They don´t NEED a running back, so why in the hell pick one?
Better watch where you trip because you just might fall!
