Burnout 2: To buy or not to buy

Post by pk500 »

Hi all:

I´m very curious about Burnout 2, which will be released for the Xbox next week. I need a good twitch-reflexes racer, and Burnout 2 could fill the bill.

I enjoyed Burnout for the Xbox, but it ended up being a good rental. Shallow replay value, as I tired of the game quickly when I was sober. Great game to play when loaded, though, as the collisions and near-misses were a hoot when altered.

Anyways, I know Burnout 2 for the PS2 received high marks from reviewers and gamers. But was it deeper than the original? Have more replay value?

I ask because with Midtown Madness, Midnight Club II, Moto GP 2 and IndyCar Series all scheduled for release on the Xbox in the next six weeks, the potential purchases for my racing-game dollar already are stretched past my limit.

Any feedback on the PS2 version of Burnout 2 is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
PK

Burnout 2: To buy or not to buy

Post by Spooky »

Well my friend,

I have the GC version of Burnout 2. I never played the original.

Impressions:

The Championship mode is fun. I am probably about half way through and the races are becoming more challenging. They were a bit too easy at first. The graphics are great and the speed is insane, but I am assuming that these things, as well as the the championship mode, are very similar to the first burnout, just with new cars and tracks, ect…

The newest addition seems to be the ‘Crash’ mode, which is a total blast. You basically try to cause as much damage and mayhem as possible on 30 different ‘short tracks’ or ‘intersections’. I have played though almost all of them and while they are very fun, the novelty is starting to wear a tad thin. That said, perhaps the addition of LIVE stat downloads, as well as possibly being able to save the crash replays could add some extended life to the title. But, you might just want to rent it for a week or two and get your fill.

BTW, I just bit the bullet and signed up for ‘gamefly.com’. I figured with the amount of games I go through in any given month or two, I could benefit much more from their rental policy. I mean, I am already a little tired of BO2 and I could be returning it for something else I will get tired of in 2 weeks with ‘gamefly’, all for the price I would have to pay anyway with a trade-in.

Feel free to ask any specific questions you want answered.

I say RENT PK. I had it for the GC for a week when I rented it from Blockbuster. After the initial cool factor of the crashes and whatnot, the novelty just wore off. It got old and the racing is actually pretty boring when you get the hang of it. I don´t know...it´s very cool the first couple of days and I played it all the time, then it sat for the next three. That´s a pretty big indicator to me. It went back and I haven´t missed it since.
Thanks. Those are my suspicions, as the same thing happened with the original Burnout.

Plus I´m leaving for Indy for nearly the entire month of May in less than two weeks, so I´m going to keep my wallet in my pocket until I return. That is, unless Stanley Cup Playoffs fever forces me to buy NHL 2K3 used for the 17,049th time.
Vacation was awesome. Had a great time with family and friends in the Florida surf and sun and totally forgot about work for a week, which were the goals.
