Why I love NFL 2K3 for the Xbox

NFL 2K3, why do I love thee? Because no games feel the same.

I´m playing a Bills´ season -- I´ve been a hardcore Bills´ fan since 1973 -- and here are my four games so far. I´m playing six-minute quarters on Rookie -- yeah, I know, I suck:

1. Lost to the Jets, 17-0, in driving rain at the Ralph. Bledsoe couldn´t throw in the monsoon and receivers dropped balls due to the rain; Curtis Martin ran wild, lights out.

2. Lost at Minnesota, 21-17, in overtime. Minny scores late to tie it. I win the toss, and Bledsoe is picked on his first or second pass of OT. Vikes´ LB returns it to my 20 or so, kicker trots out for winning FG. Ouch.

3. Won at Denver, 7-3. Great defensive struggle. I drove for the winning touchdown -- a 7-yard run by Travis Henry with about one minute left.

4. Pounded Chicago at home, 59-7. Couldn´t run worth a sh*t against Urlacher and Co., so I switched to the pass quickly. Bledsoe threw for five TD´s and 399 yards, my D picked Miller four times, including two returned for touchdowns. Did I pile on the points? You bet! But I still would have scored 49 without piling on the yards. I scored 45 points in the second half. The big lead let me experiment with good pass rushing technique, and I´m finally getting the hang of line shifts and special moves to get good pressure on the QB.

Anyways, this game has so much variety, and every game feels so different. No paint-by-numbers here!

Man, I love NFL 2K3.

Take care,
PK

I have been playing this game non-stop for the last week. I bought Madden too, but Madden has been collecting dust! I could watch the Line-Play and tackling all day, no joke.

I agree 100%. I did notice something unusual, though. I was looking to start a new season and was checking out the team rankings. Does anyone know who is rated number 2? Rams were #1, Jets #3, but for the life of me, there was no #2!!

Of course that doesn´t affect the gameplay, so who really cares. PK, you´re right about the rain. It really affects a receiver´s ability to catch. But since it is realistic, it doesn´t frustrate too much.

Joke:
Absolutely in the rain. I wonder how many of the people bitching on the net about dropped passes were running comeback or hook patterns in the rain or snow.

Seriously, in my opener in the monsoon against the Jets, Bledsoe does a three-step drop on a play and cocks his arm to pass. The wet ball slipped out of his hand and hit the carpet! Thankfully, Travis Henry fell on the ball.

It´s little touches like that keep me totally enamored with NFL 2K3.

This game gets better and better. Last night I finally went to madden and played a fellow poster and we had the most unrealistic game. Long passes being completed on a regular basis in double and triple coverages. After that expereince, I just appreciated 2K3 more and more. It plays like a professional games, where if you make one mistake, you will dearly pay for it. I have had no 2 games feel the same and unlike other games, the player attributes and team gameplanning DO ACTUALLY MATTER.

PK, last night I had a game between the Rams(I am the Rams)and Browns (preseason). I had a 16-7 lead with about 3:00 left. The Browns are driving, they get to my 27 or thereabouts, then the field goal team comes out, and I am thinking there goes that AI problem everyone keeps complaining about, I mean they are down 9, go for the TD, right? Well, they make the FG and they don´t do an onside kick, (I am thinking again AI) well, I get the ball and I am out in 3 plays, I punt and they get relatively good field position it is about 1:40 left. The damn computer then goes to a no huddle sideline and out barrage,(Browns had no time outs) They get to my four yardline with 12 seconds left! the play before that the computer spikes the football! I am like oh sh*t, I am going to lose! I call a goaline coverage play, and couch throws an interception, he was trying to hit the TE, gameover I win, whew! What a damn game. People that say 2k3 has bad AI, well, I don´t know what game they are playing, I love this game! I played on Pro default settings.
Beautiful. Stories like this -- combined with my fun experience with NFL 2K3 -- confirm in my mind that I made the best choice this year for my football gaming.
