DSP TW 2004 Tour Continues at Rostraver 2004

Post by J_Cauthen »

The Sixth Event in the Digital Sportspage Tour 2004 season continues Thursday, February 12th at Joe Wells´ superb Rostraver Public Golf Course 2004. It´s been a bit dry recently in these parts so Rostraver won´t be so easy to tame. We expect Rostraver´s patented run-off greens to take their toll on DSP Tour players this week. Be advised that this is the 2004 version of Rostraver Public Golf Course, so make sure you upgrade or grab the right course. The tournament name is "Digital Sports 6", and the password is "mars" and all players are welcome. The difficulty will be set to Advanced. No sign-up is required; you just need to enter the tournament on EASO and you´re all set. Hope to see you there!

Well I would like to play but TW on my PC isn´t working. I tried an clean uninstall (losing my created players no less) and it just isn´t working right.

It loads fine but when I try to load up any course the camera´s are all wrong and it starts "drawing" weird rough. Can´t even play.

BTW, it might be the way I installed Rostaver. What´s the correct way of loading up courses?

JRod,

I use CLS Setup, a tool made by Jorgen, to install my courses. I´d have a mess if I didn´t. You can download it at The Tiger Woods Community. I highly recommend it. It does all the work for you.

BTW, I should have clearly indicated that we are using version 2 of the Rostraver 2004. Sorry about that guys!

I need to apologize to everyone for not making it clear that this was Rostraver 2004 version 2 that we´re using for this tournament. I fear that some of you may have tried to use your original Rostraver 2004 course and not been able to get in. Version 2 uses custom rough and sound. We only had 5 players turn out for this one and I have a hunch that this is part of the reason.

This is going to turn out to be a great tournament, IMO. Rostraver 2004 (V2) is the best custom made golf course I´ve ever played on any golf game. It doesn´t knock you down with eye popping graphics, even though it looks more like a place that could really exist than any other. It plays like an absolute dream. It´s challenge is as natural in feel as any I´ve played. It´s not tricked out at any point, unless you call greens with runoff or collection areas tricked-out. I know I don´t; Rostraver 2004 is very "Pinehurst-like" in that regard.

I´ve shot 73 and 74 in my first two rounds and have had to work to get those scores. I had it one under going to 13 (a par 5) yesterday. My second shot rolled up on the green and trickled off the green to the collection area on the right. I was 75 feet from the pin looking at a chip from the rough. I didn´t hit my first three chips hard enough, and each rolled back off the green and into the rough.

Did I get upset and fuss about the course not being fair? No. I was in heavy rough and I wasn´t hitting the ball pure and/or hard enough. The greens were also very dry. The smart play would have been to pitch out of that stuff and assure that I went past the hole. This course punishes your for making bad decisions.

Bob, my hat is off to you for that 67 you shot in round 2! Under those conditions that is a phenomenal score. Heck, you tied Big Bertha with that score - take a bow!

Thanks John! Anytime I can even come close to Bertha or Ping I´m pretty excited! I shot really well (9 birdies I think) but I have to admit to sinking quite a few long putts to get that 5 under. Those putts bailed me out of a few nasty situations. The funny thing is that my putting has been horrible as of late.

I was actually -1 after 14 and managed to fire off 4 birdies to close the round. I wish I could have started off round 2 right away with that run I had going.

Thats the great thing about my game...I´m guaranteed to follow up a good round with big, fat numbers. I just cannot tame the wind in this game. I played almost my entire third round from the rough. It was one of those scrambling, frustrating rounds right from the first tee.

When the wind is blowing at 45 degree angles I´m still just baffled. After hundreds of rounds with this game I still need to make frequent trips to the driving range.

And I just pulled one out of my fanny! I bogied the first hole after being blown way out of the fairway off the tee. Then I reeled off birdies on 5 of the next 6 holes!? I one putted every green (two of them for bogies though) until I got to the 12th. I wound up with 8 birdies and 6 bogies in the end for a 70.

The wind had me intimidated in the end though... I missed all but one fairway from 12 on. This is just a fabulous golf course! The 14th through 18th are the best stretch of finishing holes in computer golf, IMO!

I think that Rostraver 2004 represents one of the best challenges in cyber Golf, especially in those conditions. I think the scores reflect just that.

Congratulations to Keith again for another win even though he has not played the final round. I had an excellent round going until 16 when my approach to the par 5 landed in the rough to the left of the pin. My chip left me about 17 feet from the pin with a leaft to right uphill putt. I hit the putt too hard and ended up 4-putting for a double bogey. Just like last week, I found a way to eliminate myself from contention. I´ll take a 68 on that course in those conditions, but it could have been better. Every week, TW2004 convinces me that this game is almost impossible to master....which is the way it should be, IMHO.

Thanks again for setting up the tournament, John!

Amen to that Tim. Rostraver 2004 is simply amazing. It looks so harmless at first, but under the right conditions, it can be really tough. I never felt like it was tricked up, nor unfair, even though it did punish me for my lack of planning and restraint.

I was -1 for the tournament going to the 13th hole. And just like round 3, I missed the green by rolling off the right rear. I pitched up (as opposed to chipping as I tried yesterday) to within 12 feet, looking at a birdie putt. It was 4" downhill and I rolled it 20 feet past. I wound up 5-putting for a triple bogey, largely due to impatience. I should have done no worse than par on this hole, but the fault was all mine.

I´m happy with the 290 I shot, and honestly don´t see how I could do much better. I had to make a lot of putts to shoot that score, and had some gorgeous sand saves. I can´t remember when I´ve ever enjoyed playing in a cyber golf tournament more than this one. Btmmayor (Bob) is a player of roughly comparable ability to myself. It´s a blast to have his scores to shoot at as I play. Now I have to sit back and leaderboard watch, now that I´ve posted my score. I think he´ll withstand the very-dry greens okay, but the gusty winds could be the equalizer. I´ll be surprised if he doesn´t break par for the tournament though.

If you have not downloaded and installed Canadian Pines GC by Martin Dufour, you are missing out on yet another gem....his crosscut green textures are simply amazing and his greens are simply as smooth as a baby´s but with wonderful undulations that look perfectly natural.....hint for next weeks TOUR....

I just tried to dl and install Canadian Pines CC and ran into some problems.

I got the libraries and installed just fine, but when I use the course install utitility to install the actual course I cannot find it. There doesn´t seem to be a .tcx file in the course directory.

I´m no pro at this by any means, but this is the first course that I´ve tried to install that I´ve run into problems with. Any help is greatly appreciated.

John:

Its fun for me to chase your scores as well. We always seem to be pretty close when the final tally comes even though we go about it completely different during most tourneys.

Oh, and by the way, my round 4......please don´t ask. Something strange happened to my cursor during play on 17 that put my score into the stratosphere, but even without that I felt like I just played a round of "Wicked 18" on the SNES.
Trackin´. Only thing now is that the install utility doesn´t recognize that file type. I guess I´ll mess w/ the options / configs and see if I can change that.

Could someone help me out and grab the final leaderboard screen for this tournament, before it drops off the history page? I forgot to grab it this AM. johnrc@comporium.net. I´m at work and won´t be able to grab it from here.

Bob, I´ve heard of the cursor bug hitting a few other players. It usually turns out to be mouse driver problems. What mouse do you have? I hate to see a round get tainted with technical problems - takes the sport out of it

And Tim... yes, I grabbed Canadian Pines based on one of your earlier messages... great coruse for sure!

John, I don´t think it was a Tiger bug. My mouse problem started a few weeks ago, but its been sporadic and this is the first time it hit during a round. My cursor suddenly becomes very jumpy and eratic. I hope it is a driver problem because it has happened with multiple mice so I know its not the mouse.

No worries about my round being tainted though. My final score was something like a 99 due to my technical problems, but I was way out of the tournament by the time my mouse problems hit, which wasn´t until 17. If I remember right I was probably a good 3 to 5 strokes back of you going into 17 thanks to about 3 or 4 holes of smacking the ball all over the green with my putter.

Despite my last round meltdown, that was a fun tourney!
