I need some tips for this game. I´ve only played it a couple of times, and I seem to be really good at wrecking and coming in last. LOL

In the races I played last night, I never got to finish the race because it would kick all of us out to the lobby. What causes that?
I don´t know how to break this gently, so here goes the truth: You´re not finishing the race because the host and other finishers, waiting in the lobby, are impatient that you´re still on the track. The host starts the next race before you finish the prior race.

It sucks that people do that, but it happens.

This sounds like a cliche, but the only way to improve in this game is to learn the tracks and practice.

I also can´t recommend enough mastering the separate front and rear brakes instead of using one trigger or one button to apply both brakes. There are times where just a dab of front brake is all you need to get through a turn without losing momentum. You want to avoid locking up your wheels as much as possible. Sometimes the brakes aren´t even needed to get through a turn -- a simple, quick lift off the throttle is all you need to control your speed and keep momentum.

Momentum is everything in this game. Keep it, and you´ll do well. Practice helps you learn the tracks and your braking points.

Another tip: Stay on your bike. You can climb the standings quickly, especially with all the Moto GP newbies online, simply by staying on your bike. If you´re battling for position with a wild man on the first lap of a race, let him go. Chances are he´ll crash in a few turns, and you can zoom right past.

Good luck! See you online.

Take care,
PK

PK, I´m starting to get a bit curious about Moto GP. The only motorcycle racing game that´s ever appealed to me is Motocross Madness. I´m starting to get the the impression that Moto GP (X-Box version only) is quietly becoming the GPL of console racing. Is that a reasonable analogy?

Do you ever see Moto GP running on any of the X-Box kiosks anywhere? I´d like to try it out, but I simply can´t afford an X-Box right now.

John:

Oh, I think it´s a stretch to call Moto GP the GPL of motorcycle racing for consoles.

Moto GP is not a pure sim like GPL. There are no bike setup options, and the collision detection and grip model can be relaxed depending on the setting.

But trust me, Moto GP is not an arcade game. You need to take good lines, and the game can be a real b*tch with the simulation slider, off-road realism and other settings turned up to 100 percent, along with AI collisions being allowed.

The thrill of Moto GP is the whole package. It´s a gorgeous game with plenty of challenge while remaining accessible to the masses. GPL is not an accessible game to the general public, as you know. You don´t just pick up and play GPL.

You can do that with Moto GP, but it takes practice to improve your skills. A relaxed sim, maybe?

Plus the rider AI is very, very good in one-player racing, and the fun while playing on Xbox Live is off the charts.

Try to play Moto GP some day if you get a chance! I never see it at any kiosks because it´s an older game. But maybe MS will roll out some Xbox Live kiosks somewhere, which should include Moto GP because it´s on the starter disc.
Actually Pk the games I played were shut off on the first or second lap. Usually before anyone even finishes the race. Everyone gets kicked off and starts going off in the lounge. Then we start again and it happens again.

I will say though that I haven´t played to often, maybe 4 races total. 3 have been cut short for some odd reason and 1 I actually had to leave early.

I actually don´t use separate front/rear brakes. The reason is that in order to have the most convenient manual shifting (which DOES make a big difference), I use A/X for up/down respectively. That means the triggers are used for acc/brake. There´s no convenient way to separate the two brakes.

If I were to put the shifting on the analog stick buttons, I´d press them inadvertently under hard racing (I do all the time), and I´d double shift or miss shifts....

However, you don´t have to slam the brakes either. The idea is to get to cornering speed and get the bike to take a set. I personally believe that manual shifting is more helpful and conducive to good lap times than braking with separate front/rear brakes. I haven´t seen anything in "A Twist of the Wrist 2nd Edition" that tells me I need to use only one brake. The key is just not to slam on the brakes, but brake hard enough to be efficient. Weight transfer will still occur because of the very nature of springs and deceleration.

I´d say slow earlier and turn earlier than you would with a car. If you´re wide of the apex, you´re not turning in early enough or hard enough. You should be righting the bike and accelerating hard out of hte corners. If you´re still full tilt and not on full throttle, you´re robbing yourself of valuable corner exit speed.

PS My gamertag is RingBearer if anyone wants to go head to head on MotoGP to test these theories out.

Randy:

All good points, for sure.

But I think the inexperienced racer can progress faster by mastering separate brake controls than manual shifting. Most of the mistakes I see in Moto GP online involve people locking up their brakes way too much or not controlling their speed properly to apex turns. That happens a vast majority of time because guys are just hammering the trigger or button for the brake.

I don´t know, maybe it´s me, but I made BIG progress in this game when I learned that a simple dab of the front brake is sufficient for speed control in many turns.

See you on Xbox Live! My Gamertag is pk500.

Yeah, yeah. I´m still seething a bit over my fourth-quarter collapse in our NFL 2K3 game last night. 13-10, damn it!

That´s what you get for trashing the Dolphins .

You´re gonna have to eliminate those interceptions and delay of game penalties. Also, sooner or later, you´re gonna have to cover some receivers by yourself.

But it was still a close game and I´m kicking myself that I had to come back against you late. I definitely paid for going for the INT without deep help.

Anyway, I´m on virtually every night late. Let´s get a series going. I´m a big believer in rivalries

Yep, Coach Lombardi, I know.

And you´re going to have to make better use of Ricky, too. 2.8 yards per carry, against the Buffalo defense?
