What´s the best website to glance at in regards to learning about the various leagues and whatnot? Please understand that I´m not at all familiar with the different divisions, etc.

ESPN´s soccernet.com is a great site and covers all the leagues. Soccerage.com is also decent, if not overly busy and somewhat confusing.

Also, go to a good newstand and buy a copy of World Soccer Magazine--a very solid mag that provides an overview of all the leagues. (This month´s cover has a picture of the African Nations Cup on the cover).

My experience is that once you get the WE addiction, you also become a world soccer fan. You´ll want to know more about the guys on your ML team, etc. It is a lot of fun.

Can hardly wait for that package to arrive next week.
Jim´s suggested sites are excellent. ESPN Soccernet (www.soccernet.com) is a must-stop for me every day. You can learn a lot just by looking at the tables for the various leagues around the world.

The official site of UEFA, the governing body of European football, is surprisingly good. It will explain to you how the Champions League and UEFA Cup are organized and also give you a decent idea of the club teams and elite league in each European country. The site: http://www.uefa.com/

Here´s one other superb resource that I learned about from a post in here. It´s a graphics-intensive but very intuitive look at the major domestic leagues in Europe, with easy links to teams, players, stats, schedules and tables: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/

Good luck. Glad you´re catching footie fever! You won´t be able to pull the needle out of your arm within a few months.

The next step: You need to pick a club to support in your favorite leagues.

Take care,

Pk,

With all the suggestions you and Jim have referred me to, this I´m sure will be plenty to start with.

By the way, just curious. Seeing that you do not own a PS2, seems it would only make sense you would want to purchase a soccer game for your PC. I recall you saying you weren´t a PC gamer, but to pass up a phenomenal series that you even praise is puzzling. Myself, I´ve never gotten into PC gaming as it seems I tend to spend more time trying to configure the game and the controller than anything else.....not to mention all the crashes I get it seems.

Dan:

Most gaming doesn´t work on my PC, for two reasons:

1. It´s a 400mHZ P3 laptop, with primitive video drivers.

2. I don´t own it. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway does, and the IS department is pretty damn insistent that no extras are put on its machines. And I´m sure as hell not going to spend my money to upgrade a machine I don´t own.

Honestly, I´d rather spend time watching soccer than playing it in videogame format. I´d rather watch matches on FSW than play WE 6, 7 or any soccer game. I still get a TON of enjoyment and wonder out of watching these guys play, as there´s such great variety in worldwide football. It never gets dull.

Take care,

Like Jim said, especially the bit about World Soccer magazine. I have yet to find a site that makes me stop reading - it´s the best montly slice-of-the-game-around-the-world possible.

PK,

That CBC site is pretty cool--never had seen it before. Canada is quietly a huge soccer community. The Italian Soccer magazine I subscribe to is based out of Toronto and the amount of ads for soccer exclusive stores in the Ontario area is overwhelming. I was surprised.

Dan,

Good luck and enjoy picking a team to follow.

I really need to break down and get Fox Sports World this spring. My soccer boils down to soccernet.com and Mexican League action on Univision.

It´s a sign of how good this franchise is that it generates so much interest in the sport it represents. Can´t think of another game out there that does this.

My only gripe with the World Soccer Magazine is that it´s a little light on the reading. It covers the world well but doesn´t really dive in say as much as 4-4-2. But 4-4-2 is for fanatical lovers of english football.

I wish I could get more in-depth coverage in a magazine. It´s hard to take soccernet on the road or read it at a coffee shop.

JRod,

Definitely agree about World Soccer Weekly--it´s not very in-depth. But there are not many alternatives. 4-4-2 is great, but the majority of the content focuses on England.

Here some other options I´ve found:

European Soccer Weekly--based out of California I bleieve. I like it because it´s weekly and their is a lot of content, but not very well written. (It´s more of a newspaper, than a mag.)

Soccer Italia--the only Italian soccer mag I have found written in english. (Based out of Toronto.) Great content, in-depth, well-written, nice lay-out, etc. The only down-side is that it is bi-monthly--only six issues a year, and pretty damm expensive.

Champions--the "official" magazine of the Champions League. Similar to what PK said about the UEFA website, this magazine is suprisingly good and in-depth. Downside-only comes out once a month, and obviously only covers teams in the Champions League.

And, just to hijack the thread a bit, the US U-23s take on Mexico tonite at 8CT to see who gets to play in the Olympics this summer. I can´t find any TV listings out here on the west coast buy maybe it is available somewhere else in the country.

Does WE7 have any of the actual clubs and leagues? Or players?

It´s all fictional I thought.

BTW, EA is making a UEFA game, scheduled to release right around the quarterfinals or some time around then.

Probably based on the FIFA engine however.

But it may only be a European release.

Traditionally, they release a Euro title about a month before the tournament, based on the same FIFA engine. There weren´t any major engine changes comparing FIFA 2000 to Euro 2000. There were major changes from RTWC 98 to World Cup 98 (excellent ones I might add...an excellent game for its era), but I don´t expect them to do that with this title.

And it usually is NOT released in the States (if we take Euro 2000 as a precedent).
I followed the first half on a matchtracker and it looked brutal. The final stats were pitiful as well. I think the shots were 18-3.
I´m so depressed, I can´t even believe it. You know it´s rough when the match tracker mentions debris being thrown.

CONCACAF sucks. This qualifying method just plain blows. Why don´t the 2 group winners qualify automatically, and screw the 2 knockout games? What kind of a ludicrous system is this that CONCACAF has devised? I was so looking forward to the first all professional Olympic team in US history, and of course Adu.

I hope Mexico loses all their games in Athens, and Costa Rica sweeps into medal contention. Like I said somewhere before, between this and the baseball, what´s the point in watching the Olympics anymore?

EA definitely came out with a Euro 2000 game. It started off with a DJ at a set of Euro 2000 turntables (Paul Oakenfold, I believe) in the intro. Was pretty much a FIFA 2000 clone.

Well I heard the US team lost to Mexico pretty badly so no Olympic berth for them.

When will the World Cup qualifying matches begin?

Will the Euro Cup be broadcast in the US?
