PK,
Good post. You really hit it on the head with the whole taboo thing. It´s human nature to want what we cannot have. Hell, the thought of banging a guy up the chute gives me the creeps but if a guy said to me "Whatever you do, don´t bang me up the chute", it would drive me crazy. For weeks I´d be thinking "Why can´t I?", "Why did he even say that to me?", "Hell, I didn´t even WANT to bang him up the chute until he told me I couldn´t". I´d break down and a month later I´d be a fudge packing fool.
P.S. - This isn´t an open invitation to any of you fruitcakes out there to try to get me to change teams.

[ This message was edited by: ScoopBrady on 03-02-2004 12:58 ]
Meanwhile, one of my best friends in high school was absolutely forbidden by his parents to even sniff alcohol in high school. So what happens when he goes to college? He becomes a raging partier and flunks out.

Coincidence? I think not. Yet more proof that prohibition -- with damn near anything -- simply doesn´t work. It´s all about parental education and personal responsibility. Nothing else.

I had a friend that grew up with the same alcohol rules as you and he scored 1400 on his SATs, went to college, became a cokehead and flunked out. Every situation is different. Sometimes things aren´t that simple and sometimes folks have a different idea of what parental education and personal responsibility entails. I´m not sure what approach I will take, but I´ve seen the majority of my friends/relatives who grew up with strict rules concerning alcohol turn out fine.

>>>I had a friend that grew up with the same alcohol rules as you and he scored 1400 on his SATs, went to college, became a cokehead and flunked out.<<<

And you know who´s fault that is? Not Mommy and Daddy´s. Not society´s. Not the college´s.

It´s your friend´s fault. He f*cked everything up and threw it all away. I know that´s not news to you, Leeb.

But many in our society would look at that kid as a "victim" instead of a fool. Or they would say he has an "illness" because he abuses drugs when all he really has is a big-time lack of self-control and common sense.

Sorry, but I have little sympathy for those who toss away a great opportunity like that.

Let me ask you this question about the kid: Did he come from an affluent family where he received "stuff" simply for being his parents´ kid? Did he work during high school? During college or summers during college? Did he pay for any of his tuition?

Just curious.

Take care,
PK, I agree with you 100% but doesn´t that apply to the kid that couldn´t touch alcohol as well. Didn´t he f*ck it up too? When I grew up I wasn´t allowed to smoke pot, but I didn´t grow up to be a pothead and I was able to do certain things in moderation...theoretically speaking of course

By the way, my friend was pretty affluent. I wouldn´t have considered him spoiled rotten, but I´m sure he didn´t have to pay for college.
Spooky,

I agree. I just knew/know parents (including my own) that educated, communicated, didn´t scare, didn´t shelter me, etc. and also had strict no tolerance policies towards drugs and alcohol. It wasn´t really an issue in my household. I figured if they were going out of their way to forbid only a few specific things until I got older then I had better think twice before doing it. I´m not saying I never drank in high school, but it made me think about it and act responsibly because the last thing I wanted to do was get caught and disappoint my parents.
Leeb:

Absolutely.

And the common denominator between my buddy and yours seems to be that Mommy and Daddy let them do what they wanted and gave them what they wanted when they wanted.

My buddy who went off the rails in college never worked during high school. We were both three-sport athletes. I worked during the school year and summers; he didn´t.

I´m not saying a job is the panacea to all ills. But it does teach responsibility, it teaches that you can get what you earn, and it does help instill discipline.

I´ll never forget my 16th birthday: My father came downstairs and said: "Hey, Pauly! Happy birthday!" and patted me on the shoulder. Then he said, "Are you going to go get your working papers tomorrow?"

I s*** you not. And my old man is no ogre -- far from it. He´s the greatest man I know. But he also knows the value of work, and the responsibility and discipline it breeds.

I´m getting to be a Zen master of the art of compromise, as I think anyone who is married longer than 10 years is. But one area in which I refuse to budge with my wife is the topic of our kids´ employment status when they are in high school: They´re working, at least during the summer, and that´s it. End of discussion.

Like you, my parents gave me a decent amount of rope. But Lord, did they pull when I got to the end of it, and pulled f*cking hard. That´s why I never wanted to get to the very end of the rope and disappoint them. There wasn´t much slack in the rope at times, but I didn´t pull it to the end very often.

Wow! What a discussion this has broken out into! This is good stuff guys; and I haven´t seen or heard anything to beat it for substance anywhere else - including El Rushbo I did hear one of our local talk show hosts say that Janet´s breast flash will be remembered as the where were you when JFK was shot event of this decade (although I would say 9-11 is more poignant).

Just wanted to related an incident that happened to my wife today. It might have some relationship to this. She teaches 4th grade. One of the boys in here class pinched two of the girls in her class on the rump, and then on the breasts. He has been suspended until the end of the week pending further possible action. He suggested that the dude he saw on TV didn´t get into trouble for it.

I know... I know, he probably sees bad guys killing people on TV and he doesn´t go around doing that, so this dog won´t hunt. I´d say that even a 4th grade mind knows the ramifications of killing versus what he sees as flirtatious, cool behavior.
I think you are on point with this one my friend. My brothers and I started working at 14. My dad had a friend that had a paving bussiness. We all started as tamp men and worked our way up to the wheelbarrow.

It was hot stinky hard work. Once we got our first check we had to pay mom for doing our laundry, packing our lunches and gas for getting us to and from work. Whatever we had left would go into a school clothes fund for the coming fall. Dad would give us all 10 bucks per week for "Fun money".

We all couldn´t wait for football two a days to start!!

We all learned the value of a buck bigtime. We also gained a huge amount of respect for our father who worked his ass off to take great care of his 7 kids.
Dad still had the time to come to all our games and school functions no matter how tired he was. Dad always made us feel important no matter how trivial the event was. Damn I really love my dad!

I plan on doing the same with my son. If he comes away learning half of what my dad taught us,that would be a very good thing.
